Not particularly interesting, as it’s just some character renders and a couple of environments, but Duke Nukem Forever materials nonetheless. They’ve apparently been posted by former art director from the project, Tramell Isaac, who also worked on Planetside and the original Fallout games. He’s looking for a job now, natch. And – assuming these are real – I expect we’ll see more such assets turning up on the web in the coming weeks. I’ve posted the most interesting ones after the jump. Click on them for full size. BioShock 2 Multiplayer: Extreme
By Alec Meer on May 8th, 2009.

As well as a lady in a Big Daddy costume, it seems the forthcoming BioShock sequel will also feature multiplayer. Crivens! But will this new mode be the Counter-Strike to BioShock’s Half-Life, or as inappropriately abstract as the infamous Deus Ex multiplayer patch? Of the just-released details, two facts stand out as super-fun: 1) we’ll finally get to visit pre-fall Rapture 2) this mode’s being handled by Digital Extremes, co-developer of UT and UT2003/4. Oh, you’re listening now, aren’t you?

Mythos Does The Lazarus Thing
By Alec Meer on May 8th, 2009.

The greatest tragedy about the closure of Flagship last year – apart from a ton of good people losing their jobs, of course – was not the loss of dreary demon-basher Hellgate: London, but of the promising free-to-play Diablolike Mythos. Ditching the subscription fee was a dangerous experiment for Flagship, but Bill Roper and co never got to see if it worked. However, their sometime publisher Hannbitsoft managed to hang on to the license and tech upon Flagship’s demise, and they’ve just announced development has restarted. From a different studio, inevitably. How do we feel about this?

Holy Smoke: Infernal For Free
By Kieron Gillen on May 8th, 2009.

Fancy a free game involving shootage? You probably do. Gametap have 2007 heaven-vs-hell shooter Infernal available to play for free-o-pounds. Described by the RPS lounge as “not great” yet “an acceptable enough manshoot”, you can literally play it now. Yes. Anyway, a video beneath the cut to get an idea of what it’s like via the medium of moving images.

Huxley Beta Sign Up: For Americans
By Jim Rossignol on May 8th, 2009.

The beta sign up for long-awaited MMOFPS Huxley has appeared on the game’s homepage. It sits alongside some swirly number things that you can hover over to reveal impressive video-splendor. Space armour dudes look angry. Sadly, you can only currently sign up to the beta if you are a resident of the North American continent. I’ve posted the now-ancient trailers for the game below. They’re probably not representative of how the Unreal-powered shooter currently looks. In fact, few details are known about the game, although the most notable aspects are that it will play something like Unreal Tournament, and support up to 100 vs 100 battles on servers of around 5000 players. Needless to say, I’m fairly excited.

Steam Global Achievement Stats
By Jim Rossignol on May 8th, 2009.

Steam has opened up its Global Gameplay Stats, listing the percentage of all players who have earned achievements in various Steam titles. It makes for some interesting reading: only 30% of people who bought World Of Goo have finished it, while only 76% of Portal owners have got to the fully-functional Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device stage. It’s like a monument to incomplete gaming experiences, and reminds me of Lego Star Wars creator John Smith getting up on stage to sing an ode to games he’d never finished, at the Nordic Game convention last year. I wish I could find a recording of that.
Operation Flashpoint 2 Delayed, Trailer
By Jim Rossignol on May 8th, 2009.

Operation Flashpoint 2 has now been pushed back to the Autumn, apparently to give the team more time on improving the player experience. This announcement arrived along with a new trailer, and a comment from Codies executive producer Sion Lenton, who had this to say about the game’s island territory: “Skira makes for an immense and, with the latest visual pass, a magnificent battlefield; we’re exceptionally proud of the build so far. Creating this vast island, populated by unscripted AI military forces, is no trivial matter and so, to get this absolutely right, we’re now investing additional development time.” Of course this also means that it’ll no longer be head-to-head with Arma 2, which is still scheduled for release in June. We should have more detailed impressions of Operation Flashpoint pretty soon, so we’ll let you know how it looks.

Warcraft Tower Defence
By Alec Meer on May 8th, 2009.

At the risk of bombarding you good people with tower defence games in these happy times of Plants vs Zombies and ridiculously cheap Defence Grids, let’s throw another one into the mix. Don’t roll your eyes at me like that, young man – this one is free and ingeniously different.

AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAAlpha!!!
By John Walker on May 7th, 2009.

You may remember we posted about AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! – A Reckless Disregard for Gravity back in January, excited by the idea of an extremely silly base jumping game. Well now you can play Dejobaan‘s it for yourself in the Ugly Alpha. It’s a limited version of the game, giving you a taste of what’s to come. You run, you jump, you fall, and ideally you land without breaking all your bones. There’s tons of dumb jokes in there, capturing the direction the game is obviously aiming for. Hopefully by the time the game gets closer to release it won’t force you to use arrow keys and P for menus, the cursor for others, but WASD and mouse for the game. Hint hint. Anyway, check it out – it’s good times. Videos below.
Men Of War Is A Fun Time
By Jim Rossignol on May 7th, 2009.

And cheap on Direct2Drive. And more expensive on GamersGate. It’s also slightly less expensive on Steam. So perhaps you can buy it. Why am I promoting this fiddly war game in such brazen fashion? Well, because I love it. You might love it too. Thanks to Teodor for the tip.
