E3 09: Modern Warfare 2 Stage Demo

By Jim Rossignol on June 2nd, 2009 at 8:16 am.

Courtesy of the all-seeing eye of GameTrailers, we have several minutes of Modern Warfare 2 high-quality camera-shot game footage from the E3 presentation. It’s heavy on the spoilers, showing a set-piece on an icy cliff, some combat, and some snow-mobile action. And that looks like all kinds of fun.

Saw this while I was watching the live feed on ign, looks very very fun, hopefully MW2 will have more “extreme” environments like this.

Doesn’t look that much different to MW graphically though.

  2. Bravedave says:

Yeah looks awesome. My only gripe with COD4 was that it could take a ridiculous amount of bullets to kill an enemy if you didnt get headshots. This does seem to have been changed though going by that footage.

This just shows how totally awesome lineair singleplayer games can be. It looks like they programmed the other guy to make his cool moves when you look at him. Valve could learn something here for Alyx.

  5. Dzamir says:

COD is the same game from COD2, and the people are always excited about that. But I can’t understand why people complains about Left 4 Dead 2.

  6. Interesting how the new player character is the prodigy of CoD4′s main player character (McTavish).

By that measure, we can only draw one conclusion – Price survived and is now the main villain!

  7. mandrill says:

Looks good. I enjoyed MW immensely and its plotting and characterisation was the best I’ve seen in an action shooter for a long time. Hopefully MW2 will be keeping that end of the game up.

  8. Junch says:

All I can say is, damn we looked good as MacTavish in CoD 4 hahaha. And now we get to see ourselves as our boss in MW2… if that makes sense.

  9. Supraliminal says:

Damn these modern day games look good.

Judging from the start, that could be the best mountain climbing simulator ever. Though are there any competitors?

You can’t run and jump off of one part of a mountain and hope that your ice axes will hold you on the other side….you make a nice little man shaped crater 2000 feet below plus the altitude would me u take 2 steps yes 2!!! and you would fall on the foor in a horrible exhausted mess…sorry to piss on everyones parade :(

    report

  12. Lemming says:

    @ Dedajim

Neither can 2 men take out an entire air force base by themselves, lighten up a little its meant to be fun…

  13. Owen says:

    Looks just fantastic.

  14. paddytehpyro says:

Its not meant to be a realistic simulation of warfare in the modern world. ITS A GAME. Entertainment. Looks like its the rest of the singleplayer that should have been in CoD4. Which was superb imo.

  15. Gwyd says:

Well it looks like they’ve pulled it off again, the SP campaign in COD4 was frankly the best I’ve played in many a year, MW2 is looking to be on par at the very least. Lets hope they keep the enjoyable MP aspect from the original and we’ll be looking at a must buy game for 2009.

  16. SiUnit says:

EPIC! Really liking the CoD:Extreme Sports style! I hope they involve some kind of base jump/sniper rifle level =D

  18. Walter says:

I’m slightly concerned about the “Moments later” screens. Were those an actual part of the game of the game or worked in for the presentation? I don’t want to feel like I’m playing a trailer.

  20. Koopa says:

I hate how he reloads so often. More games should use clips instead of total ammo count, so players would actually use most bullets before reloading.

    report

  21. Zero says:

@Walter: Almost certainly worked in. I doubt they would put that much trouble into implementing ice picks for them to be used for 60 seconds.

  22. Pemptus says:

Oh my, does that look like pure gamey fun? Yes, I believe it does.

  23. meeper says:

Did he shoot off someone’s leg just as he reached the runway (about 3/5s of the way through the vid)?

    report

  24. simon says:

As much as the footage is appreciated, do you think you could give your cameraman some lessons in, oh I don’t know, how about knowing how to use a video camera? In particular the bit that you’re supposed to point the camera at the bit you want to be seen?

    report

  25. HidesHisEyes says:

    STOP RELOADING, IT KILLS IMMERSION

    Annoys me…
looking like it’ll be good fun, like the last one anyway.

  26. Radiant says:

You do know that motion trackers attached to guns do not exist right?
And that you can’t slap somebody in the chest with an icepick and have him fly off his Diehard 2 snowmobile without breaking off your elbow?

There’s more then reloading and clips in this clip that break the illusion ;)

But god damn what’s in there looks awesome.
Motion tracker in a snow storm = genius level design.

    report

  27. Jeremy says:

It may kill immersion to reload all the time, but I will kill immersion after every shot :)

  31. Dagda says:

What I hope to see them pull off is moments where you look at what Soap is doing and think “Oh, he’s still his own player character.” Have him snipe a guard while you move forward, have him man a turret while you move to flank. Don’t have him get all the interesting duties, necessarily, just give callbacks to when you were the one playing him.

Bah, COD died when perks where added and bolts and skill where removed.

  33. Adventurous Putty says:

Looks absolutely marvelous — it’s almost cruel that Gametrailers ended the video where they did. Like they shut off the TV on a good movie.

  36. Steve Lee says:

I think I remember an RPS post where you asked IW about the eerily realistic night-vision chopper mission in CoD4. You asked them if it was meant as some kind of anti-war statement, but said that they simply told you they did it because thought it would be awesome?

If I’m not making this up, I’d love a link to the post as I can’t find it…

  37. mitch says:

to they guy who said “two men couldnt take out a whole airforce base” yes they could 1 its all stormy and stuff and 2 they are SAS the best in the world, ye i must admit some of it is more or less impossible but going round takin ppl out silently is not impossible especially for the SAS

    report

  38. CODUltmate says:

If u read about modern warfare 2 it says “We’ve never gone for realistic, more for authentic. So if you see a soldier, his gear’s going to look legit, his tactics are going to be real, but obviously we go over the top on some things where it has to be fun. We’re not building a sim, we’re building a game”
