Just started playing this. The racing bits seem stupid - a world of shortages yet people are wasting petrol and dressing like noughties grunge boys? Red arrows floating in the sky? Engine noises that make me wonder if my soundcard is popping? No in-car view?

The graphics are fantastic and smooth though.

I kept wanting to get out of my car and explore, something like STALKER, then have to drive away from mutants quickly. Sad that it was all built for some silly races. No mods to chaneg the game seem to have been developed.

My other big issue is that it is GFWL. My frist GFWL game - I hadn't seen the 'Live' bit on the box. Irritating mess of bits that took me out of the game to create accounts on various confusing web pages, then updates that were blocked by my Firewall, then back into the game and having to login again for something that I only want to play single player, otherwise I am threatened with the fact that I can't even save the game. I will never buy another GFWL game, it is complete extraneous gaming shit.

It looks like the scale of the terrain and its half-hearted apocalypse could be employed to make a difficult experience even more explicit.

Just another bad credit personal loans.

great to see another videogame world explorer ;) since fallout 3 and this one, great visions are coming truth, visually - endtime, a real interesting scenario, isn't it...

perhaps, people understanding enjoing this journey perhaps will enjoy the movie "the quiet earth" - i just thought about the ending - beautiful.

and there is a possibility of knowing where to steer but without knowing what's to come - did you guys get concious about the flow you get in some games? you know what button to push, without thinking about it - there lies the truth of all :)

What this game needs is some "Patrician"-style trading combined with "Boiling Point" guns... put some commodities in the town, somehow restrict the changing of vehicle mid-journey when you have cargo and you can be running freight between the camps dodging attacking nutters on trikes with guns.

or, with a bit of AI being a nutter on a trike with a gun ambushing an enemy convoy...

@Jim,

Thanks for this article.
I'm really tempted to pick this game up purely for driving around the large open world and exploring.
I'm wondering how the more standard game elements stack up though (racing, handling, etc).
Are you working on a Wot I Think/full review for this one?

@ Jim, that was stellar dedication to the time that some of us have when the wife has to work when you don't, or when the kids are at school, or your wife and kids are gone out of the house for any long amount of time. Needless to say,? I'm very interested in this piece of environmental genious. Im not too sure that i need shooting or puzzles for the first installment although those mysterious black trucks could become quite curious as was the Gman in the HL series is turing out to be. Will this be Steam distributed? Regardless, im ready.

The cow herding game actually sounds really interesting. But also: Interstate 2058? (Or whatever year this is?)

Great concept for an article Jim. I'm one of those that just loves exploring game environments. It'd be nice if there was something to reward all that non-race driving.

ok, sounds nice. But the truth is (by PS3 eperience):
It's very very boring. All the time the same enviroment, same buildings over and over and millions of stupid trucks which are scripted and don't interact with you. Very unrealistic driving physics, no heavy weather effects like promoted (except in a few races).
FUEL is the disappointment of the year.

Darkwind is a recent car-combat game that maybe will interest some people in this thread. The cars are something like the ones in Interstate 76, there's a nice physics model, and it's set after a weather apocalypse. I've only played the formal races, but there's also a persistent world where you have a gang and can do things like running goods from city to city. It's turn based.

@Hypocee

Interesting. While that's kind of annoying, it's certainly better than AI that makes the game too easy. Thanks, I guess I'll wait for a few more reviews to get a clear consensus and then purchase accordingly.

This game looks awesome, and your piece was really well-written. Can't believe you spent the best part of a day just touring a virtual landscape and barely even scratched the surface!

With regards to the thoughts on "what it could have been if it wasn't just a racing game", I got the same feeling from Just Cause. They created a vast (if 99.999% generic) world in that and provided very little indeed to do in it apart from play with silly toys.
