Well, just to help fuel the fapstorm; was a SNES-era child, but only really ‘got it’ once I got my hands on an Amiga (which lives yet, if you open it up and reseat the chips occasionally)… Populous II, Dune II, Lemmings, an awesome port of Bubble Bobble, Alien Breed, Great Courts …ahh through the hazed spectacles of nostalgia even the crap ones look good.

Back in my dungeons and dragons days (the one with pens and papers and dice) our DM’s campaign was based on The City. We played for 4 years… and never quite finished.

I could never remember the name of the game though… but Xebecs Demise has always had a place in the back of my mind (and my heart).

Now I just need to find a copy of this…

SSI? I haven’t heard of them in ages!!! I remember playing Dark Legions with my brother over and over again. Such a cool game, there was so much different stuff you could do with all the characters. And you’d always have to protect those bloody seers…..

I think it was pc gamer that put me on to that. I was 13. Reading a British gaming mag in Australia. Fun times.

@TB – 25? Damnit, im 25 this year and i’m still not an editor of an internationally renowned gaming website. I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere.

This whole series has been very interesting thus far, good work. Need more mid 90s action as suggested above (X Wing, Doom, Transport Tycoon etc!), everyone so far has been slightly to a lot older than me!

Another great article. I’m clearly older than most of you; most of the games that made me were Infocom text adventures back in ’86. I remember spending ages getting frustrated with the Hitchhiker’s Guide’s infamous Babel Fish scene until at last the enormous relief and feelings of accomplishment at finally seeing that fish flying through the air, hitting the bag, getting blocked by the towel from falling in the drain, having the cleaning droids being distracted from catching it by the mail… Such clever, cruel writing. The next big moment I recall is a decade later stopping by my office’s Accounting department and joining the mesmerized throng as one guy played Wolfenstein 3D. I’d never seen a first-person game and in fact hadn’t played non-text games at all. I knew I had to try it. And I fell madly.
By the way, is anyone else alarmed by Mr. Wolpaw’s “If we ever make Portal 2” comment? “If we ever”? Good god!

Warlords 1
Realising that daylight is appearing outside and that me and my friend have fought all night.
When we got warlords 2 we only ever played the map that looked like warlords 1. Quick send the hero to the ruins ! Must beat that bastard !
