Smashing Stuff: Burnout Paradise Revisited

By John Walker on July 6th, 2009.

This awesome pic is from the Burnopedia - burnout.wikia.com

400 smashes and 120 billboards smashed, it’s crashed again. And I’m secretly hoping it will have taken my save game with it for a second time. I’ve got a horrible feeling I’ll end up starting a new save game otherwise, just so I can smash everything again. I have a bit of a problem, and it involves Burnout Paradise.

Section 8: Jumping Dudes Fight Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on July 6th, 2009.

Robots, jetpacks, tanks booted out the back of dropships, lots of firepower and some extreme mechanised jumping: Section 8‘s most recent trailer has all the elements that makes an wizened PC gamer sit back in his chair, run a hand across his beard and say: “hmm, I remember Tribes.” Anyway, for those of us who haven’t been able to get on the beta, the trailer, courtesy of Destructoid, is below.

All The Nice Buoys Love A Virtual Sailor

By Tim Stone on July 5th, 2009.

The sea is a cruel mistress. Forget her birthday and she’ll cut up your clothes, write ‘bastard’ on your front lawn with weedkiller, then drown you. Personally, I feel much safer doing my seafaring via salty software like Virtual Sailor. While VSTEP’s Ship Simulator enjoys a much higher profile, I find myself reaching for VS – ten years old this year – more often.

The Sunday Papers

By Kieron Gillen on July 5th, 2009.

That PJ Harvey got Thom Yorke to sing 'All night and day, I dream of making love to you now baby' remains splendid.

Sundays are for waking up and finding a Jim in my front room. And now, while he makes his way the long, painfully hungover road to Bath, I turn to writing a short, painfully hungover Sunday Papers. That being, a weekly round-up of interesting games-related material that came to my attention in the last week presented in a list form, without a pop-song which came to mind first thing in the morning and has proved oddly soothing.

  • Occasionally you hear about something which is so splendid, my only urge is to rip it off. Sincerest form of flattery and all that. Anyway – Ben Abraham started playing Far Cry 2, with one subtle change. If he dies, he’s dead and has to delete the save game in the Iron Man style. Clearly, this changes the way the game plays out, and the stories which result and using it as a source of writing rather than just increasing player difficulty strikes me as somewhat fun. Go read here. It’s inspired others to follow. Go here or here. When game over means game over, everything changes. What games do you think would make a good experiment for this kinda thing? STALKER struck me as possibly fruitful…

The RPS Bargain Bucket: Reborn!

By RPS on July 4th, 2009.

After a couple of weeks off whilst Savygamer‘s LewieP was away wrestling five-hooved giant elk in Mongolia, our weekly round-up of reduced-price PC game delights returns. Any of these tickle your wickle, missus?

Space! Battles! Gratuitousness!

By Alec Meer on July 4th, 2009.

In space, no-one can hear you be gratuitous.

Space is gratuitous. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly gratuitous it is.

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Gratuitous.

Ack, it’s no good. I just can’t decide which stereotypical sci-fi quote to tiresomely rip-off. Instead, just watch this video of Cliffski ‘Gets A Bit Feisty’ Harris’ new’un. BOOM.

Brutal Redux: Crunchball 3000

By Kieron Gillen on July 3rd, 2009.

God, I just love how Brutal Deluxe feels as it sits on your tongue.

Nosing through the comments thread on Kickabout League between relaxing games of simulated foot-to-ball, I caught Supraliminal disparaging the game and hailing the wonder of Crunchball 3000. Awesome, thinks I. If it’s better than Kickabout League, that’s great. I’ve found a new crush. Sadly, after playing, it’s really not, being a straight Speedball 2 clone with none of the online multiplayer options or subtlety of play of Kickabout League (You may note the repeated links are me trying to make more of you play the thing. C’mon. Man up). Which isn’t to say it’s not a bit of a giggle. Some more details below…

Unto Two Worlds II, Too

By Jim Rossignol on July 3rd, 2009.

First there was fantasy RPG Two Worlds and now there is two of it. Them. The announcement about the twoness of Two Worlds was made today, as TopWare Interactive and Reality Pump released this extraordinary sentence into the wild: ““Two Worlds II” presents a totally new gamer experience, one in which 2 years of intensive development has enabled quantum leaps in all spheres: completely overhauled AI and balancing standards, experienced authors, the active combat system and the brand-new engine all combine to provide an unforgettable experience where excitement, sheer enjoyment and graphics rule.”

Sheer enjoyment and graphics. Imagine that, if you can.

The game is set for a Winter 2009 release, and actually looks rather shiny.

North American Section 8 Beta Freed(Ish)

By Jim Rossignol on July 3rd, 2009.

A mission! Should you choose to accept it, this internet will self-destruct in five seconds, etc etc. Go and get the Section 8 beta from Fileplanet, and find out what is a-happenin’ in this multiplayer sci-fi shooter. Blues reports that even this simple task won’t be made too easy, as “this event is a staggered beta with keys distributed first come, first served with limited access. Beta keys will be distributed on a regular schedule.” Sounds limited.

And yet, if successful, you will earn some kind of imaginary badge from the RPS Downloading And Playing Academy Of Testing Games That Are Not Finished Yet. Go!

A Fool In Morrowind, Day 7 – Powerhat

By Alec Meer on July 3rd, 2009.

Let me tell you about my hat.

  • It is the first thing in I’ve paid for in this land, bar some skill training and a few lockpicks.
  • It cost me 1500 gold pieces, which is more than most shopkeepers even carry. Easily obtained and replaced by a man of my stealthy means, frankly.
  • It’s around a foot and a half tall, made of what appears to be brass, and masks my features entirely with a cold, machine-like visage. Yes, it does appear as though I’m wearing a giant, metal vegetable on my face, but I like the look.

Slicing ‘N Dicing Man & Beast: Wolfenstein Teaser

By John Walker on July 3rd, 2009.

They never told us about this in our history lessons.

This is a fun teaser for Wolfenstein. A “motion comic”, it’s a faux-gritty tale of tracking down Hitler and his chain guns, my favourite moment having to be the swastika-shaped prison. Good, inappropriate times. There’s also a couple of trailers from a week or two back that we haven’t posted so far, tucked neatly below.
