The latest update for Dawn Of War 2, There Is Only War, is now up on Steam. Instructions for how to activate it are here. The update comes with the “world builder” level editing tools, and there’s a PDF instruction document for that here. We’re totally expecting an RPS community map. The full list of other changes included in the patch is here, and boy, that is a lot of changes. The beta runs to 14th July, when it will go live for the retail game.

King’s Brutality: Queens

Fancy ten-minutes of uber-difficult indie platformer about domestic violence? ‘Course you do. Because you’re sick in the head.

Tim Schafer Confirms No Brutal Legend For PC
By John Walker on July 2nd, 2009.

Eurogamer conducted a live interview with Mr Tim Schafer this afternoon. You can read the results over here, but a couple of points more pertinent to our fields are highlighted below. The major headline would be: Brutal Legend definitely isn’t coming to PC, despite all our mewling and whining. There’s also some interesting comments about his thoughts on the potential for a Grim Fandango sequel.
Foot Like A Traction Engine: Kickabout League
By Kieron Gillen on July 2nd, 2009.

This is risking being a turn-up for the RPS books. I’m meant to be going to an interview, in a pub. Like – now. But I keep on playing games of this online foot-to-ball game, Kickabout League. Yes! A browser-based foot-to-ball game has got its teeth into me. Now, I’ve only played for a handful of matches, but this really seems to be an appealing, top-down mouse-and-keys esque take on football, cut to the bone. That is, no-throw-ins (There’s an agreeable pinball-esque off-the-wall approach) and lots of GOOOOOOAAALLLLing. I’ve even managed to win some matches, which shows that the learning curve can’t be that steep. You can sign up here or read a few more, interview-going-delaying thoughts below…

Poster-’pocalyptic: Fallen Earth Test, Trailer
By Jim Rossignol on July 2nd, 2009.

The posh new Fallen Earth website has announced that you can get into the “stress test” of the game via Fileplanet, which is great, because we all love using Fileplanet to get hold of these things… Anyway, the noises coming out of the Fallen Earth beta haven’t so far been too promising, but we’re yet to play it for ourselves, so we’re going to reserve nuke-from-orbit judgment until we do. The trailer has a modicum of snazziness to it, at least, and the lack of activity around the game – which has reportedly been content complete since last October – finally seems to be spooling up to release.

A Fool In Morrowind, Day 6: Tweet
By Alec Meer on July 2nd, 2009.

Today in my ongoing series (going on to where, I still don’t know) of wanders through the wondrous land of Morrowind: postcards from the edge. The edge of irrelevancy. Apologies for the lack of an instalment yesterday, by the way: can’t guarantee these will always happen daily, but they’ll remain pretty regular.
Oh – you need to read this one from the bottom up.
A Stand Up Fight: Interstellar Marines
By Kieron Gillen on July 2nd, 2009.

Hmm. Interstellar Marines is an indie-developed high-sheen FPS which is… well, I’m intrigued for a load of reasons. Partially because it looks novel (Talking about trying to do a realistic first-contact alien event) and partially because of its route to market. The short version – for more read the press coverage – is that in 2006 they used a high-end game engine to do a demo, which got attention, they turn away from major publishers in favour of indie-dev… which makes the engine too expensive, so they’re moving over to another one. Which they can’t show in game footage publicly. Yet. It’s also got an interesting development philosophy - interesting in that it manages to be both self-deprecating (in its insistence on the import of the community and attention) and self-aggrandizing (not least in calling it “AAA Indie”. As in, if they’re AAA indie, what are everyone else?). Do read. Those videos they can show are below…

Global Agenda Gets Trailer Happy
By John Walker on July 2nd, 2009.

It’s a Global Agenda visual festival! Five new videos have appeared, showing off various aspects of the online shooter-cum-MMO. Having had a play of it recently, it’s a game I’m really looking forward to playing more of, finding out how it transitions between the initial co-op shooty quests and the latter PvP game. Well, follow that link for all the details. Meanwhile, the many videos appear below.
The RPS Electronic Wireless Show Episode 22
By John Walker on July 1st, 2009.

Well cor and blimey, it’s a new podcast. Sorry about the delay since the last – we all lost our feet, and then were trapped by elephants. Recovered and recompiled, Jim and John spoke out loud into a recording microphone, and now offer the result to the warm folds of your ear. Sat on John’s patio, surrounded by cats and revving engines, we soaked in the warm July sun and chatted about matters of PC importance. Matters such as the nature of previewing, Burnout Paradise, and which playground games should be made for PC.
Monkey Island 5: First Ep Next Week, New Vidaction
By Alec Meer on July 1st, 2009.

The year’s most unexpected sequel is barrelling towards us, and Telltale hope to whet a few more preorder whistles by finally releasing a smidgen of interface’n'puzzle footage – specifically, the opening minutes of the reborn point’n'click adventure. Episode 1, Launch of the Screaming Narwhal, is out in just six pirate days (which are like normal days, but with a looser moral code), and if you’re convinced you’re going to love it, you can pay pirate money (which is much like normal money, but with a slight scent of seaweed) for it right now. Video below. Comments that will almost certainly annoy someone are also below.

Over and Over: Overlord II Impressions
By Kieron Gillen on July 1st, 2009.

It’s about ten minutes in the game and I’m presented by quite the sight. Hearing footsteps on the stairs, I shout to drag the Lady into the room. “Hey! Look at this”. I continue what I’m doing, before glancing over at her distinctly disapproving face. “You have just killed the Labrador of the seas,” she says coldly, then walk out the room. I can see the future. It is a lonely future. It’s a future which may drive a man to evil. Which is lucky, as I’m the right place.
What’s the problem? I’m just going clubbing.
