WoW: Cataclysm, Trailer, New Zones

By Jim Rossignol on August 22nd, 2009.

Enormo-trailer ahoy for World Of Warcraft. We’ve got the full thing posted below, along with two fly-through trailers for the zones of Gilneas and The Lost Isles. We get a look at some of the changes to existing zones that have taken place during the cataclysm, as well as some of the new features and classes. Gobbos, and wolf-dudes, obviously, but also some of the new monsters, dungeons, and progression stuff. Oh, and Deathwing the ebil dragon. He’s not happy.

Diablo III: The Monk Trailers

By Jim Rossignol on August 22nd, 2009.

BlizzCon has revealed the Monk as another class for Diablo III, as well as revealing new environments with the borderlands, an evil-infested desert zone. The Monk, needless to say, has miraculous punching and teleporting abilities, for the slapping of evil. Multiple trailers below, along with the traditional scene-setting cinematic.

There’s some crazy rumours flying around about Diablo III coming out this year, with the original story being that it won’t hit in 2010. Obviously we’ll be keeping an eye on that.

New WoW Expansion: Cataclysm

By Jim Rossignol on August 21st, 2009.

The new World Of Warcraft expansion has been announced at BlizzCon. It’s called “Cataclysm”, and will raise the level cap to 85. There’s also going to be two new playable races, goblins and worgen, and the obligatory new dungeons and raids. VG247 got the whole thing in detail over here.

The Monk class was announced for Diablo III, too. And there’ll presumably be a video available soon – the main site has been flattened by the internet for now.

Nothing To Do With Air Benders: Avatar

By John Walker on August 21st, 2009.

Sunglasses!

Whenever a trailer begins with the phrase, “The following is all in-game footage,” there always seems to be a horrible chance that what follows will elicit the response, “I should bloody well hope so, because if that’s a render…” I’m not sure how I feel in response to the reveal, at last, of Ubisoft’s Avatar – a game that boasts the involvement of James Cameron, to coincide with his first movie in twelve years. Set on Pandora, an alien moon populated by the Na’vi, visited by humans, it features actors from the film reprising roles. However, rather than attempting to botch together the film’s plot in a game format, instead the game is set before the events of the movie.

Murky, Moody Footage Of Call Of Pripyat

By Jim Rossignol on August 21st, 2009.

Many things worry the tiny minds of the RPS team, but one of the most oft-concerning thoughts is whether Stalker: Call Of Pripyat, the third (possibly final?) instance of the games of the zone, will ultimately be the best . Can GSC make up for the misstep of Clear Sky and land a game that has the atmosphere and precision of the original, while still being different enough to be worth playing?

If nothing else, the new areas that will feature in Call Of Pripyat should give us plenty of scope for exploration: the clogged, radiation-pooled river valley, a buried and abandoned village, and finally a district of the city of Pripyat itself. All these can be glimpsed in the new trailer (I particularly like the anomaly coming out of the side of a building) which largely consists of fly-through sequences of the new environments. Go check out the spooky new bloodsucker effects.

Jolly Developer Walkthrough Videos Of: Risen

By Jim Rossignol on August 21st, 2009.

Hmm, I’ve seen this sequence of game events somewhere before: shipwrecked up on a beach, where you find some similar washed up loot, then fight something with a stick, and meet a sexy lady. Egad! It seems that the opening sequence of Risen, the new fantasy RPG from former Gothic developers Pirhana Bytes (the new Gothic is being developed by Spellbound, and more on that another time) has happened before. Isn’t it… well isn’t it the start of Age Of Conan? And possibly another RPG I only faintly recall? Perhaps these games took their cue from the same issue of Fantasy Happenings Journal (For Fantasy Professionals), where ideas for fantasy adventures are free. Free to use. And reuse. And… there’s a three part developer walkthrough, and despite my de-Risen of the subject matter (oh, I’m that good) it’s worth taking a look. Whee!

Wave To Me: Ship Simulator Extremes

By Jim Rossignol on August 21st, 2009.

First there was Ship Simulator, and now there is Extremes of it. Something like that. Anyway, Paradox Interactive have sent word that the greatest ship-simulation of all time is now even greater, thanks to a new game scheduled to arrive in the harbour of our attentions in early 2010. The new game will once again feature careful navigation of “hovercraft, coast guard interceptors, mammoth tankers, tugs, and cruise liners” as you travel famous (and obscure) ports around the world while traversing “extreme, and ultra-realistic weather conditions.” Still no full-physics destruction model though, which I think would make it.

Nonetheless I’ll say it now: next year is hot for ships. (Trailer below decks, of course.)

Mi, Myself and I

By Kieron Gillen on August 21st, 2009.

A load of balls. In a good way.
The splendidly named Constantine Gominyuk mailed us to tell about his indie game Mi. In its currently available alpha version, it’s the absolute definition of minimalism. Both in the graphics, but also in its mechanics. It has literally three controls: one button splits your blob in two, one button restarts the level and one more quits the game. It’s all tension, timing and the mechanisation of mitosis. You can get it from here or see a video of it in play below..

Natural Selection 2 Monster Mash

By Alec Meer on August 21st, 2009.

A Skulk, lurking. As opposed to a Lerk, skulking.

Time to check up again on upcoming Half-Life mod-goes-pro Natural Selection 2: is it still bright-eyed, bushy-tailed and wet-nosed? Its creators Unknown Worlds have been dribbling out a stream of bestial teasers for this long-time coming multiplayer shooter. Natural Selection’s big draw has always been man vs aliens – with the neat twist that those aliens are playable. And they’re really not just A Man With A Funny Hat On…

Pimp My Ride: GearGrinder

By Jim Rossignol on August 21st, 2009.

Truth be told, GearGrinder from Headup Games looks a bit rubbish. That said, we’d be remiss not to report on a game which features transforming jet-propelled trucks armed with flamethrowers, missiles, and anti-aircraft cannons. Yes, it’s one of those driving-with-guns games, only this time more ludicrous that previous variations on that idea. It’s probably not going to be any good, and we’re probably not going to care… It’s best if you go look at the trailer, and see what I mean. (And today might be a bit heavy on the trailers, as GamesCom is in full swing, and a load of PC stuff is spilling out.)

Piracy Statistics: East India Company: Privateer

By Kieron Gillen on August 21st, 2009.

This had us worried. The press release announcing the first add on pack for the recent East India Company described it had a chilling trailer. We were expecting footage of our mothers, held at knife-point as a naked Quinns crept ever closer, a knife between his teeth and dressed as one of the characters from Pathologic. Except it’s not. Thankfully. Anyway, the expansion pack brings Privateers to the world of trade, including a couple of campaigns and a load of appropriate skills, like “false colours” which makes you fly the wrong flag. The dirty cads. Anyway, you’ll find the chilling trailer below.
