Heroes Reborn: The Entomologist 2.0

By Alec Meer on August 20th, 2009.

From the very first moment I heard about superheroic MMORPG Champions Online, I had one question – could I recreate my beloved City of Heroes character The Entomologist in it? With the open beta now live (rather unhelpfully, only so long as you’re a Fileplanet subscriber or have preordered), I finally got to find out. Live, little man, live!

Nanosuit 2 = Crysis 2

By Jim Rossignol on August 20th, 2009.

The Crysis 2 teaser site is up, and it’s quite an entertaining idea: it’s a brochure site for the Nanosuit 2, the next version of the powered armour worn by the super-soldiers of the original game. At the time of Crysis I felt as if the Nanosuit was the best idea, with its constraints actually being a little too tight on the player and hampering the hilarity of carrying opponents around by the throat. Hopefully this time we’ll see less limits on super-soldier action, and a more over-the-top deliver from the super-punching, super-jumping, cloaking death-armour. Anyway, there’s nothing of the game to be see yet, but the PDF leaflet detailing the capabilities of the new suit is fun. It possibly gives away some features of the game, too: “with Crynet’s optional Necro-Organic Metabolites plug-in (NOM), the N2 can even extract usable energy from battlefield carrion.” Hmm. Icky.

Highly Acceptable In the 80s: Majesty 2 Retro Trailer

By Kieron Gillen on August 20th, 2009.

The Majesty guys really should stick out some better screens of this.

One of our Unknown Pleasures for 2009, Majesty 2 once again makes our heart happy with their latest trailer. It’s done in the style of an 80s made-for-TV serial. It also features an impressive technical feat by creating a soundtrack which sounds identical to Dallas, but probably not in a legally infringing way. You’ll find it below…

Guildhail: First Guild Wars 2 Footage

By Kieron Gillen on August 20th, 2009.

Party! Party!

The RPS-chat-room is broke by the cry: “Guild Wars 2 has splendid terrain!”. As we all know terrain is the single most important factor in PC Gaming. As such, I continue to be excited by Guild Wars. The first half of the video is slightly animated versions of the always beautiful Guild Wars concept art, so when the actual game footage arrives… well, it’s both a surprise and a joy. Clearly, I’ve taken a grab from the concept art section to avoid ruining the segue for you. The footage itself follows…

No Brains, Please: Zombie Shooter

By Alec Meer on August 20th, 2009.

There is but one cure for illness and grumpiness: shooting lots of pretend things, over and over again, barely pausing for thought, food or oxygen. Die! Die! Die! You are all metaphors for my problems. Die!

It was in a such a mood that I wandered over to Sigma Team’s 2007 game Zombie Shooter, one of those many cheap-sounding games lurking in the Steam store for a few quid. Zombies? Shooting? There’s no way to get that totally wrong. Let’s risk it.

Rock, Paper, Birthday: We Are Two

By John Walker on August 20th, 2009.

HAPPY USDAY TO YOU!

Can it only be two years? Rock, Paper, Shotgun feels like such a fixture of the internet it’s hard to imagine a time before we existed. Don’t try – it’s bleak, dank and induces vomiting. This very day, two years ago, Rock, Paper, Shotgun began existing on the internet. (Okay Mr and Mrs Super-Fussy, it’s true there are posts from July 07, but that was us mucking about and the site launched in August, so you’re a wrongface.)

As we enter our terrible twos, it seems important to look back at what got us here over the past year. (To see what got us through the first, head here.) We’ve been a mixture of exclusive previews and reviews, unique interviews, exquisite Wot I Thinks, Verdicts and Impressions, and the sorts of features and wordythinks that make us unlike any other site. What we’re saying is, we’re bloody awesome. And so are you. We love you, and we love that you read our site.

Just Cause 2: Tourism Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on August 20th, 2009.

Just Cause 2 is taking the whole Tourism In Imaginary Places idea rather unseriously for their GamesCom trailer. The latest glimpse of the open-world third-person absurdi-game is set up as a trailer for the beautiful holiday destination island of Panau, where the game takes place. Frankly, it’s a little throwaway after the game’s spectacular showing at E3, when we wrote loads about it, and then cooed and wooed at the entirely insane developer walkthrough. But still, it confirms Just Cause 2 as one of the most appealing games of the coming year.

Razer’s Glowing Thumbpad Of Mystery

By Jim Rossignol on August 20th, 2009.

Readers with memories will be able to recall that I was on a quest for a new mouse the other week, and that led me back to Razer, and the Diamondback. Basically, my old mouse (the Krait) but with thumb-buttons. Irritatingly, it has proven slightly too sensitive, I think the switches on the mouse buttons are a little too easily activated. But no matter, because at least I didn’t spend a huge amount on Razer’s latest monstrosity: the Naga. A seventeen button “MMO” mouse. No, really. If you need another keyboard for your thumb then this is where you need to go: that’s twelve thumb buttons. By my calculations that’s enough buttons to type out “LOL U R PWN3D N00B” with your opposable digit, which should come in handy in times of great omg.

Lego Universe: First Images

By Jim Rossignol on August 20th, 2009.

The official Lego Universe site has some images of the game “in action”. They all look at little concept-y to me, but if it’s a rough approximation of what we can expect from the game then I’m interested. Gleaning what little we can from this shots, we can see that it’s going to have a Lego minifig spin on the traditional avatar creation and customisation, while the game is probably going to feature collaborative building projects of some kind – we can see a monument and a rocket here.

It’s also going to feature pirates and ninjas. Which makes sense. Could this be the next big thing for Lego videogames? It’s certainly intriguing, and the idea of being able to construct things from virtual Lego and then port them into the game world makes this an interesting overlap with the Second Life world-building themes that usually get left out of game-like MMOs.

Fallen Earth Open Beta, Now, Er, Open

By Jim Rossignol on August 19th, 2009.

The post-apocalyptic MMO Fallen Earth is slowly trundling towards release, and the beta, hosted on Fileplanet (HISS!) is now open to all. Nothing much more to report at present, but I’ll be delving into it myself over the weekend, so perhaps I’ll see you in there. From what I heard from my mate Dan, it’s “mmkay, spose.” So that’s interesting.

Oh, speaking of betas, thanks to everyone who showed up for Section 8 this evening, it was a blast, even if my connection was a bit wonky.

Time Is Collapsing: Singularity Trailer

By John Walker on August 19th, 2009.

Someone stole his flesh and skin and stuff!

GamesCom (it’s apparently spelt “gamescom” but I just refuse) reveals a new trailer for Raven’s Singularity, which shows a good deal more in-game footage than we’ve seen so far. I know there’s cynicism, but I remain very interested in this. I know there has to be a shooter that gets time manipulation correct one day, and it looks lots of explosive fun. So there. Have a look at the new content below.
