The overall concept of a game with and without its fiction really is a brilliant idea though, I'd like to see more of this.

I must say I was pretty disappointed to see that the second game was exactly as abstract as the first. Here's my response if you're interested:

While a team of students at GAMBIT created Woosh and Waker, we aren't the ones running the research study; a different lab, whom we made the game for, will be. (No, you aren't being studied when you play the game on our website!) But part of the point of making games is to have as many people play them as possible, so we have both Woosh and Waker up on the website.

It's always good to see more articles with references to Woosh instead of just Waker, Woosh has been feeling quite left out lately.

Gambit is one of the most exciting places in gaming at the moment, I think. They've got some terrific projects hiding on that site.

"While they’re trying to compare two approaches, it’s entirely possible the real underlying cause would be “our narrative skills were sub-par”. Equally, an example in a single genre like this I don’t think has wider implications."

Exactly what I thought when reading this. I like the idea of using two identical games and then giving the design a different approach, but there should be a lot of other examples, in different genres, to go with that too. Using just one face-off seems to really limit the credibility.

I like the background in the image of the second game, though.

Couldn't be bothered finishing it off, but it's/they're essentially good little games and while I don't know how successful their experiment is, it'd be interesting to see more people try stuff like this.
