I wasn't planning to shoot them, I was thinking more of a first encounter during a hunting trip a few days off the ships. It could go either way (based of the prejudices of the day), I just want something with a bit more depth.

If only I could talk to the deer.

@Jacques - basically you are saying that all games need to be about frenzy and instant gratification. If you haven't shot your first nazi within 12 second of installing, the game is a waste.

While that certainly does appeal to a large core of gamers, I think there is still plenty of room left for people who prefer a different pace. As was mentioned in the article, the "risk of failure" isn't death, but that you've wasted an opportunity. And the cost of failure, relocating new prey which can take a very long time, is arguably a far, far more meaningful experience than loading up at the last checkpoint from 15 seconds ago.

I don't hunt, but my brother-in-law does, and I'm a bit shocked at that anti-hunting rhetoric on here. First of all, if you aren't a vegetarian you have absolutely no right to oppose hunting because you support a multi-billion dollar industry that brutally massacres millions of animals a year.
*(Disclosure: I eat meat and support the same industries. but I also don't see hunting as a horrible evil)

Secondly, hunting is a very complicated and difficult skill to master. Hunters who take their craft seriously know more about animals than any of us ever will. They know what they eat, how the reproduce, how they age, how they migrate. They need to know this because most hunting has self-imposed artificial restrictions. Shooting a turkey is ridiculously easy, but hunting turkeys involved using a type of firearm that has a very limited range. So limited, in fact, that hunters need to "call" the turkeys over to them to get a shot.

Yes the "red neck" stereotype who just likes to shoot and kill exists. But then again, for every thoughtful RPS reader that I encounter, I run into 20 of the Halo-frat-boy types. So I would counter that if you want to claim that all hunters are red necks, you (as a video gamer) probably run around all day screaming "ur a fag".

I'd like to see a Sim Old Man and the Sea. Press A to crack the fish over the head. Press Enter to brace yourself against the hull. Hold tab to lie motionless for fourteen hours. Cry a little bit.

I want to play a hunting game based on "The Bear" by William Faulkner. You spend 6 hours hunting a bear, and the next 6 hours pouring over details of your family history. Whee!

I suppose I kind of skipped the topic for an anti-hunting rant, and well, I can't exactly argue against hunting in video games, other than that the idea bores me. Back when games were simpler, this might have had an appeal, or at least, a commercially viable one. Now we have AI, and with AI we have expectations. Virtually shooting something that can't shoot back just isn't very exciting to the average gamer, it's too simple, there's no risk of failure, other than missing a shot and a deer, and if the deer don't spawn or you can't find them easily enough, it just becomes tedious for anyone short of TF2's Sniper (not people who play the class, but the character himself, though I'd think he'd get a little bored eventually)

Just been looking at Hunter's World, an MMO being developed at the moment. Looks really cool. Great community there as well.

Well written stuff.

I believe there was a brief vogue for arcade cabinets of Deer Hunter... actually, the one I kept seeing might have been called Buck Hunt. Homophonically witty.

I've always been interested in the idea of hunting games, because most other shooty type games that appear to allow for stealth and stalking the enemy tend to end up with the enemy proving skillful enough to see you from 3km away when you're hiding behind a wall.

And then shoot you in the left nut.

if I lived in America, I'd hate to think how much of my 'disposable' income would go on buying an elaborate range of guns. I think i'd be on a shooting range every weekend.
As it is, im currently looking at a holiday in Prague as they have some shooting ranges with mostly russian weaponry. (Dragunov, mmm)

This write-up was hilarious and informative as ever, Mr. Stone, and got me to thinking about hunting and its simulation. I'm in a rare position as an American "gun-nut" that owns only one gun, and cannot abide the idea of blasting an animal for anything less than survival. It made me realize that if some of my compatriots can slake their lust for bloodsport with digital deer-shoots, I'd prefer that to gunning down our furry friends.

It also made me realize that if there were a sim that accurately and realistically modeled the ballistics of a vast array of guns, and then restricted me to shooting trees, soda cans, beer bottles, clays, and those whirly-target-things, I'd actually be pretty pleased. I just like the machinery and pinching my fingers.
