Attack Of The Games: Cloverbrawl

By John Walker on September 21st, 2009 at 9:04 am.

Happens to me every morning.

What if all videogame characters came to life? Awesomes, that’s what. Imagine having to dodge Combine on the way to work, or high-fiving Sonic while waiting for the bus? Life would be unquestionably better. This is the subject of a new 18 minute short film by The Seakitten Collective – a Belgian couple who create their own special effects – called Cloverbrawl. You can find it below.

Spotted by Joystiq, the film begins with a Cloverfield-esque group watching James Cameron’s speech at this year’s E3 and thus entering the obligatory coma. Until Mario shows up.

It’s packed with smart ideas and plenty of gamer in-jokes. Do watch.

  4. Jacques says:

The idea’s pretty cool, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Pretty much instantly forgettable for me.

    • AndrewC says:

It certainly isn’t professional quality, and certainly some relative critical judgement is in play here, certainly. But also it is brilliant, so shut up and also you smell.

    • Frools says:

truth, best bit was everyone falling asleep while Cameron prattled on about Avatar at E3, rest of it was pretty terrible
didnt bother with the second half

  5. Mike says:

  8. Naurgul says:

    That was… mmm… pretty random.

  9. Stijn says:

The first to minutes made me cringe, and then I closed the tab :(

  10. Rosti says:

WWGFD will always amuse me. Also, this is ace, so win-win there.

    report

  11. Aldaris says:

Well, the vid doesn’t load very well, but it stops at very amusing moments, such as the moment they finish saying ‘Where’s the cake?’ and ‘Dude, you’ve got issues.’

    report

  12. The Fanciest of Pants says:

    Good Stuff, bravo.

    report

  13. Jockie says:

The acting was entirely cringeworthy i’ll admit, but the rest of it was pretty fun and inventive.

  14. mrrobsa says:

Although maybe this could do with a trim here and there this was still remarkable. Excellent work guys!

  15. underproseductor says:

I’m sorry to say this, but it looked pretty stupid. Maybe I’m not THAT kind of a gamer.

  16. Mort says:

    Enjoyed this

  17. MrRud says:

I mean, kind of funny, but it doesn’t go past mere reference.

  18. Cunzy1 1 says:

I think what everyone meant to say was WOW despite significantly less time and production costs it is significantly better than all of these:

    Super Mario Bros.
    Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture
    Double Dragon
    Street Fighter
    Mortal Kombat
    Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back (July 18, 1998)
    Wing Commander
    Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Pokémon 4Ever – Celebi, Voice of the Forest
    Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
    Resident Evil
    Pokémon Heroes
Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life
    House of the Dead
    Resident Evil: Apocalypse
    Alone in the Dark
    Air
    Final Fantasy VII Advent Children
    Doom
    BloodRayne
    Forbidden Siren
    Silent Hill
    Dead or Alive
    Dōbutsu no Mori (Animal Crossing)
    Clannad
    BloodRayne II: Deliverance
    Resident Evil: Extinction
    Hitman
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale
    OneChanbara
    Postal
    Like a Dragon
    Far Cry
    Max Payne
    Resident Evil: Degeneration
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li

Imagine what they could have done with a budget.

    report

  19. AndrewC says:

If they’d had a budget the film would have been stopped from being made by the dozens of copyright infringement lawsuits it would get slapped with.

Also: it’s better than Clannad? But, presumably, not as good as Enya?

    report

  20. Jockie says:

Mortal Kombat was a camp cheesy classic, the music alone makes it better than this.

    report

  21. LionsPhil says:

Well, it has a gratuitous Wilhelm scream, which is something.

I don’t quite now how something quite so heavily neckbearded can live with itself after giving the strider the wrong weapon, though. Surely it should now be decrying itself on the Internets for ruining Half-Life 2 forever?

Best part of it was the end credits, and that’s just because of Anamanaguchi.

    report

    • LionsPhil says:

Also, shame on you that disrespect the Street Fighter. That film was brilliant and you Angry Internet Men are just butthurt that it didn’t take your silly little computervideogame seriously.

      report

  22. Cunzy1 1 says:

@Jockie: Agreed but then the music from the film Mortal Kombat was better than the film Mortal Kombat.

    report

  23. Some Guy says:

    try and name the games.

    report

  24. Flobulon says:

I’d advise you to try and stick through the first half – the second is lolawesome.

    report

  25. Tomski says:

That was awesome, meme-filled-awesome, but awesome none the less.

    report

  26. army of none says:

    Excellent! :D

    report

  27. Wooly says:

I do love the sound that Striders make.

    report

  28. Nick says:

The very very end was good, the rest quite amusing when they weren’t talking.

    report

  29. Rinox says:

Loved the second part, cringed mostly at the first one. But overall a very nice job. :-)

Was cool to see my home city in there, too!

    report

  30. Stromko says:

    “C’mon, it’s got frame drops.”

That bit made me laugh my ass off. :)
