MMO Darkfall is kinda like that, everything in the game can be built by players, including the cities etc. It's really fun.

Also with majesty 2, I totally agree that it falls short. I actually think it gets too much credit here... when I first got it, I was blown away (I played Majesty 1 a lot, mind you)... but within a few days it proved to be a major let down.

-Very intense, no room for variety. The monsters are hardcore compared to majesty 1... so instead of being able to play with an RPG / adventure style where you watch a few heroes progress... you are continuously forced to play the game like an intense RTS. If you watch your hero for 30 seconds, you're being swarmed.

-Rushed... no artwork / love. Majesty 1 had LOVE, man. They put their heart and souls into that game, and it still kind of fell short in some ways (though, not for it's time). And you could feel it... majesty 1 was like entering a world where everything had substance. Majesty 2 has NO substance. As soon as they got the basics done, they released the game, seemingly without beta. That rushed-game crap makes me kind of sick to my stomach, and it hurts 1c's reputation DRAMATICALLY in my book. Blizzard set a standard... follow it people!

-You can't become as attached to your heroes because the hero interface blows now and got too simplistic / hard to get to, you cant follow heroes around anymore the way you used to. I miss heroes retreating to a far out Inn and seeking refuge there without the monsters tearing the inn down immediately.

Because of the many problems and intense design, as well as not implementing skirmishing (the main way I played Majesty 1), I have to say that Majesty 1 > Majesty 2... you no longer attach to heroes... and it's a poorly built game. Fun, if you didn't play majesty 1 or your just really into the gameplay, but incredibly repetitive. Frankly, I feel exploited as a Majesty fan and really let down. This is NOT majesty... it's some kinda of crappy RTS built off majesty's foundation.

I will say though, they got basic system down PERFECT. This could be built upon to make a really great game... but I doubt that's going to happen.

YES the single worst part of this game is the prohibitive cost to hire Lords. It's tough to get attached when you really don't get to use your guys much.

Please don't waste your time on this.
Free-thinking heroes is another term for bad coding.
After 9 minutes, I had three ogres smashing my town to bits.
I put 2000 gold bounties on them, all I had saved
It's In an lower level scenario. Only three of my 12 heroes came out of their "guilds" to challenge and were instantly obliterated.
They killed my castle, 4 more heroes and guards just died because they lost their home.
They killed a guild and all the related heroes died (or I believe left), homeless.
There are major balance problems with this game.
The heroes are useless.
Even when you put 1200 gold into forming a party, they still just sit around town looking for adventure rather than going after an objective.
WASTE!!!!!

I'm so happy they changed almost nothing. I think they did a sterling job, it feels like a real sequel - they added in some really nice extras, but ultimately kept it pretty much the same which, call me crazy, really is just what I want from a sequel. Especially a sequel to something so awesome as Majesty. If you visit the official forums you may get a chance to chat with the voice actor who does pretty much most voices in the game, really nice guy and fun to talk to. :)

Pluses:
It added a build queue.

Minuses:
They totally broke the AI. The Heroes won't do anything at all, unless it's in direct response to a reward flag or it occurs within about 10 meters of their guild.

This really sucks, because the fun of the first one was that it did feel like the little pixely blobs had some personality. In this one, they're all too braindead. Rangers won't explore the map. Rogues don't steal. Nobody does anything except attack monsters immediately in their vicinity, and then if they're all cleared out, they just wander around "Looking for adventure", but then forget about that after getting the tiniest bit away from their guild hall, and go home. Repeat ad infinitum.

Whole huge chunks of the map remain totally unexplored. Treasure chests will be ignored. A monster den *slightly* further away from your town will just sit there and pour out baddies forever, and none of these crusader types will bother going to deal with it. Guards who are "patrolling" will patrol right on by enemies attacking their guard tower and not react at all.

It's actually so broken that it makes me wonder (or hope) that they might not patch in something functional at some point.

The biggest let-down of this game was that it is the original game, packed in a new outfit.

Same heroes, same buildings(well, mostly as i didnt see those earth gnomes and i might be missing a few more as i dont remember the original all that well), the narrator sounds almost the same, i remember some of the missions from the original and i remember them having the same goals/ways to complete them, the creators of this game berely brought anything new to the it and its disapointing as this type of game has alot of potential because its something not explored yet in the industry.

I gave it another go today with the knowlegde I had from yesterday.

With knowing the whole map and scripts it was a breeze. I had my heroes attacking him after 55 of the 85 days. I only built rangers, clerics, paladins, dwarves and agrela priestesses. With two paladins decked in the best gear tanking him there wasn't much of a problem. I just had to quickly build up my economy to have the gold to rezz people and cast a few immune to magic spells.

And that's a problem with this game. The map is the same, the scripts are too. I knew that ogres would come from the east so i built a few towers there. I knew that lots of imps would come from the north so I put a defense there. And I knew I had to quickly erase all the enemies. I already figured out I had to use the high hp units like paladins and dwarves or they would get one shotted. Too many missions had to be played twice. Once to get your strategy straight. Once to flush the map.

The mission before was indeed very similar. Knowing that the enemies met at the northern part I build all my buildings in the south. And with two dwarven towers in the east the paladins were kept at bay. Second playthrough wasn't so hard anymore.

Absolutely silly question coming up, but y'see, I loved the original game. I played it over over again throughout the years because the humour and, of all things, the NPC voices tickled my funny bone *just right*. I have the voices downloaded on my PC just because they still make me grin.

If anyone else felt the same way, about the silliness with the voices/ways the heroes (and even peasants & tax collectors) acted, did they capture that in this one?

Hmm, I massively enjoyed the tutorial part of the demo but then couldn't get anywhere with the "Defend against innumerable swarms of hard-arse ogres" level. Going from this review and the comments, it seems fair to say that that second bit may be more representative? I.e. massively frustrating. Couldn't stay on top of things at all. 'Tis a shame, because from the tutorial I was almost ready to pre-order it pretty much there and then!
