Not Space Marines and Not Genestealers not locked in mortal combat in not a Space Hulk.

You may remember a fine pretty-much-complete PC translation of the boardgame Space Hulk. You may then remember that the lawyers Cease-and-desisted ‘em. You may then remember them trying to get permission from THQ. You may remember them saying that THQ has given permission as an April Fool’s joke, in an impressive example of a sense of humour failure. And you may remember them deciding to file-off the serial numbers on Space Hulk by inserting their own fiction and re-do the game. Well, maybe you do – I stopped following it after the April Fool’s gag. Anyway, they’ve finished and released it, now renamed Alien Assault and… well, this is an impressively bad job of filing off the serial numbers. If you want a PC Space-Hulk boardgame version, I’d go get it quickly, because frankly God knows how long it’ll be up.

Speaking as a long-time veteran of the board game, Space Hulk is not fair. It’s not Blood Bowl, where the dice can be brutal to both sides. Every failed roll can result in a dead model, but only Terminators are an irreplaceable asset. The Genestealer player doesn’t care if a dozen ‘Stealers are obliterated, there’ll be another dozen along in a couple of turns. The game has no pity for the Marine player.

And that’s why I love Space Hulk. The Marines are the underdogs, and they are on a suicide mission. They have to push forwards, even though they’re going deep into unknown territory against an enemy with an infinite number of reinforcements. They can’t hole up and use their range advantage to hold off the hordes because their storm bolters will eventually jam. All they can do is grit their teeth, head for their objective, and hope they get there before they run out of Terminators.

Keep advancing, keep faith in the Emperor, and keep some CPs in reserve to unjam your bolters.

(my continuing SH restoration project to replace the ‘new content’ with Space hulk ones)

Well that was easy – blood angels, genestealers and space hulk imagery is back. The initial ‘alien assault’ logo is encrypted/scrambled so that cant be changed without mucking about, but the main menu one is now changed so thats fine. I suspect TD -want- people to restore it, as long as they aren’t seen to be the bad guys.
The additional weapons need 40k versions, though im loath to change them too much as some of the new pixel art is better than the 1.0 release.
Some of the ‘paperdoll’ termintator images like adornments will need some fiddling as they are in a different location to terminator armour, but theres a list of pixel offsets in a config file. this will take some fiddly work.
im doing some personal tweaks also, making the radar have clearer good/bad colours is the main thing. Also replacing the ‘blip’ counter graphics as i dont really like the ones in there..
I may even try replacing the floor tiles with scans of the 3rd edition ones.. hmmm
more soon! (sorry if this is considered a blog, just thought some folk might be interested. delete if appropriate!)

Yes, please! I’m holding off installing this until your little project is done :)

RogB, keep us updated on the progress! Torgen i would go ahead and play it now, its not all that different.

    • RogB says:

Yeah Torgen i’d just install and play it now. Im hoping to put all the tweaks in a patch that’ll just go over an existing install without breaking anything. ;-)

So Space Hulk… one of my favorite games of all time, before I knew there was a board game I played this on Playstation 1. Also, not reallizing that the 1993 version had come out…. omfg this is so addicting and I love the older version… the alien assault game only thing i have a problem with is the flame throwers in original version its’ 100% death to enemy. Now it’s not and it’s ez to die… sux since i had my fkkng guys totally fkkng maxed fkkng out omfg I’m pissed!!! So much careful planning and scrutinizing for nothing alien assault is great game but whoever changed the flamethrower gets the big finger!! you azzhole!!
