He’s Outraged! GearGrinder Demo Lunacy

By John Walker on September 15th, 2009.

It's all the rage.

Kieron mentioned this morning that the GearGrinder demo was out. But just knowing that wasn’t enough for me. I had to play it too. HAD TO. And I can tell you, on a scale from 1 to Completely Hatstand Insane, GearGrinder scores a Batshit Crazy.

Revolution Action: Gridrunner Revolution Imminent

By Kieron Gillen on September 15th, 2009.

Hello ALT text readers. How are you today? I am well.

We haven’t talked about Jeff Minter’s new game in a while. When it was still being called Gridrunner+++, we made it one of our Unknown Pleasures for 2009. It’s since been re-named Gridrunner Revolution and is inching closer to its release date. You’ll be able to get it from the 25th and review code is starting to distribute. First to actually talk about it is head Retroremakes bob Oddbob who explains why this is looking like a really interesting shooter. More after I’ve had a bit more time with the code, but until then, here’s some footage of the game in action…

Illuminating Torchlight Footage

By Jim Rossignol on September 15th, 2009.

We’re particularly excited about Runic Games’ upcoming dungeon crawler, Torchlight. It’s looking incredibly slick and colourful, just the kind of thing that jiggles the lock on our treasure chest. Seeing it in action gives us a little more to be excited about, and thankfully some more in-game footage has appeared. This time it’s showing off one of the classes, The Vanquisher, who seems like badass lady-ninja type. There are also giant purple spiders. Go take a look.

Wot I Think: Batman – Arkham Asylum

By Alec Meer on September 15th, 2009.

Rocksteady’s slightly delayed PC version of their rather well-received man-thumper/ledge-grappler goes on sale this week. I’ve been playing it. I’ve also written some words detailing how I feel about it. But I’m not just going to give them to you, oh no. If you can solve my cunning riddle, you can work out how to read them. Riddle me this!

Danger Wideautoload: Geargrinder Demo

By Kieron Gillen on September 15th, 2009.

There would be some manner of truck pun I could do here, I dare say.

This demo accelerated out of – er – wherever demos accelerate from in – er – the recent past (“Yesterday”). It’s a truck-based racing-with-guns chaos thing and is out in a couple of days time. Is it any good? Well, that’s why they released this 600Mb-or-so demo. Go have a nose. To get a taste, you’ll find the trailer Jim linked to (and was mean about) beneath the cut…

Red Faction PC: Release Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on September 15th, 2009.

The first mission in Red Faction: Guerrilla is to destroy a building with a super-powered sledgehammer, and it just sort of gets better from there. The PC version is out this week, and will include the DLC released for the console versions for free. If you want to wait for a detailed verdict on the game then we’ll have one for you next week, but in short: BIFF!

Meanwhile, you can check out the trailered explodaction below. Hammertime, etc.

Overwatch, Baby: Scottish Space Hulk Ranting

By Kieron Gillen on September 15th, 2009.

He totally is.

As anyone who listened to the last podcast I did will know, my last couple of weeks have been based around rushing to the door at the slightest sound of postman. Perpetual disappointment which was made unperpetual yesterday when the ridiculously beautiful Space Hulk 3rd edition turned up. Geeking out even more than me was Ex-Consolevania Now-Downtimetown Rab Florence, who has recorded 10 of the finest high-geek ranting I’ve seen in quite a while. You’ll find it below. It features cardboard comparison and kissing, vocoded songs about overwatch and close up of space-marine crotches. It’s quite the thing. I justify this as an RPS post because i) Space Hulk was the basis of the fine game Alec wrote about previously and ii) I’m incorrigible.

Something About Pigskin? Quick Hit Football Beta

By John Walker on September 15th, 2009.

Imagine a football team called the Twinkles. Best ever.

There should be a gameshow in which contestants pick a subject about which they know almost nothing, where the aim is to demonstrate the absolute minimum amount of knowledge about a subject. So getting something completely wrong doesn’t score you anything, but showing any depth or proficiency of understanding about the subject gets you eliminated. My chosen subject that I know the bare minimum about would be American Football. Or as our American readers know it, baseball. See? No points, but I wasn’t eliminated. I mention this in light of a new, free MMO called Quick Hit Football.

Return Of The Jedi Knight Series

By Alec Meer on September 14th, 2009.

Yes, that's the Dark Forces cover art. And yes, you're A MASSIVE NERD for recognising it.

The LucasArts comeback wagon just keeps on rolling. It is a wagon laden with wondrous games both old and new, designed to trick us into falling in love with the computeryvideotasticgames arm of the George Lucas Empire all over again, even though it used to keep us locked in the cellar and whipped us with the metal end of its belt on a daily basis. It’s a deception few will grumble about, however. The revisiting of its back catalogue on download services (specifically, Steam and Direct2Drive) continues with the announcement that the Jedi Knight shooter/lightsaber series will fetch up on said services soon. That’s ‘soon’ as in ‘tomorrow’. Wootini!

My Kingdom For A Gift Horse: Majesty 2 Demo

By Kieron Gillen on September 14th, 2009.

This screenshot is totally unrepresentative. Shame! Fie! Fie!

We’ve written quite a bit about Majesty 2 so far. In fact, I’ve also got some review code an internet-click away which I need to have a prod at. But you can circumvent the RPS-information-drip and go and play the bally thing yourself. There’s a 640Mb Demo available to download here. There’s no details I can find what’s in it. Let’s hope it’s actually a demo and not the world’s biggest virus. To get a taste of this indirect-management fantasy-kingdom game, there’s some recent footage video below…

First Images: Carrier Command

By Jim Rossignol on September 14th, 2009.

So Bohemia Interactive’s other announced project – in conjunction with Black Element – is Carrier Command. The long overdue remake of the aged sci-fi classic uses some of the same tech as Arma 2, and you can see some of the influences in these first in-game screens. No action to speak of, just environments and a few glimpses of your future-vehicles, but it’s definitely got the right vibe for a Carrier Command game. Hard, gritty sf, huge, expansively vehicular. Awesome. Oh god this could be so good/bugged. Go take a look. (Thanks to James for the info.)
