A Left 4 Dead 2 cinematic trailer has leaked upon the internets, spotted by Evil Avatar and Shacknews. And you’ll maybe not fall out of your chair in shock to learn: it’s a bit good. It’s below.
Clearly as a leak this isn’t the high quality version Valve would want us to be seeing first, but it’s good enough, and it’s damned funny. And super-gross. Man, the bit with the chainsaw. It’s a clever balance of threatening zombie movie themes and well timed humour. Less slapstick than the TF2 animations, more focused on the severity of the situation and the humour that’s born out of that. Have a look for yourself:

They promised free DLC for the the L4D intro!
22/10/2009 at 22:42 Vinraith says:
At this point I have to agree with Psychopomp, put the stick down and walk away. Everyone’s learned whatever lesson (right or wrong) they’re going to learn from the L4D issue by now, I sincerely doubt anyone is going to change anyone’s mind.

It’s no way as cool as the opening intro to the original.

22/10/2009 at 22:05 Captain Bland says:
Really? I think Nick is probably my least favourite, and this endears me to him a bit.. Also, Ellis benefitted alot from the trailer. In my head he was in danger of being too similar to Loius. I think my order of preference will be: Rochelle, Ellis, Coach, Nick.

22/10/2009 at 21:28 ChaosSmurf says:
Is it just me or does this imply that there’s a cinematic at the end/beginning of each campaign? I don’t see this being the intro anyway.
22/10/2009 at 21:31 Duffin says:
I wouldn’t guess so.. it’s too long for that. Theres only one cinematic with L4D1 and thats just set in No Mercy, so nothing odd about this.
22/10/2009 at 21:33 Psychopomp says:
I think they said something about optional cutscenes before and after each campaign, awhile back.
I may be wrong, though.
22/10/2009 at 21:35 ChaosSmurf says:
It just seems like an awful lot of WHAT HAPPENED NEXT clips for some random trailer they threw together. Like the first bits are the intro, and the bit with Coach throwing the can of oil looks like the finale they mentioned in latest PCG.

Did nothing to get me exicted about the setting, that said the new infected look great. I’m not a boycotter but really, this is too soon after Left 4 Dead for me to be buying another almost indentical game, which slightly less likable characters. (Other than Uncle Phil)

Why did I say meh after watching this?
The L4D intro learn-a-matic was, terribly overused word, epic, but this seems a whole lot less focused. I don’t know.
Maybe the HD version will be better, once I get home and to a computer that can handle it.
22/10/2009 at 21:45 Arathain says:

Wow, I like this even more than Meet the Spy! Valve best cinematic so far, imo.
Cant’ wait, oh man…
22/10/2009 at 21:48 EthZee says:
Bbot, this looks less like the learn-a-matic from L4D one and more like a trailer for the game as a whole. I’d expect (hope) that the intro/intros for L4D2 are more focused.
This is the awesome compilation. Me like.
22/10/2009 at 21:52 Alexander Norris says:
I don’t think this is the intro so much as just a CGI promo trailer? It seems awfully showcase-ish and uneducational for a Valve intro.

Awesome.
22/10/2009 at 22:07 Lobotomist says:
Its a shame that they forfeit great characters of L4D for another set of honestly “meh” characters.
Probably because if they used old characters, they could not justify why the game is not sold as expansion….
22/10/2009 at 22:13 Stupoider says:
Personal opinion, Lobotomist. I, and many others, find them great! Sure they aren’t the old survivors, but I’m really not fussed at all, I like these folks.

While I will miss the original 4, Francis especially, this game has Uncle Phil! Uncle Phil!
22/10/2009 at 22:09 Vinraith says:
It’s undeniable that Valve knows how to make one hell of a trailer, and “this used to be a nice neighborhood” got a chuckle.
22/10/2009 at 22:10 Angel Dust says:
Man that was great cheesy fun! And while I love the original survivors and hope to see them again, I’m warming to these guys. I quite like the southern accents and it’s nice to have them in a context other than “the bigoted redneck”.
23/10/2009 at 02:44 Psychopomp says:
“I quite like the southern accents”
It’s nice to hear that, for once.
22/10/2009 at 22:12 Railick says:
Would it not be sweat if there was a level where each character started off in their home? It could be called Outbreak! And each character starts in their own home location (maybe the coach and school so on) and they have to fight their way through the sudden zombie hoards as those around them are eatten alive and turned into zombies before their very eyes, using whatever weapons they can find until they all reach a safe zone together (Which is where the next epsidoe would start off at) I Think that would be HAWESOME
For example The Coach is standing there with his school Principle who is talking about letting him go if the team doesn't start to win some more matches soon, The coach is upset that he is about to lose his life time job just went everything is put into context by a crazy hoard of zombies breaking into the skool and killing everyone (it would be late after hours so no kids there still and it would be a high school so even if there were kids they'd be older) He has to take maybe a baseball bat or whatever and fight his way through the still pretty thin group of zombies and find his way to a central location where the other characters can meet up and face one last wave of zombies from all directions.

It’s an extremely small component of my disinterest in the game, but I really liked Bill. There’s no one in this group I’m half as interested in playing as I was in playing Bill.
22/10/2009 at 23:08 Arathain says:
I feel much the same way about Louis. I always play as Louis if I can. There’s something about a man who keeps his shirt and tie in a world like his.
On the other hand, I’m really looking forward to getting to know these folks, especially after this trailer.
23/10/2009 at 00:12 DarkNoghri says:
I’ve always much preferred Francis. I finally decided why, a while back: he’s Jayne from Firefly.
For some reason I’ve never liked Louis though. It always bugged me that he screamed more like a girl than Zoey did.
22/10/2009 at 22:18 Phase says:
I actually really like these new characters. I get the feel that they’re going through hard times, and that everything is going downhill for them. The original characters are terrific, don’t get me wrong, but you know what I don’t hate?
I don’t hate these new guys.
22/10/2009 at 22:23 Dead Fish says:

22/10/2009 at 22:23 Phydaux says:
Wow, what an incredibly mediocre trailer.
I wanted to get L4D but I didn’t get it when it was released, I thought about getting it when it was cheap, but missed out (I was on holiday or something) so I thought I’d wait until it was cheap again. Then they announced L4D2, so I thought I’d wait for that. But the more I see the more I think I should just lest this series pass me by.
Dead Rising 2 is out soon, I can get my zombie fill there.
22/10/2009 at 22:23 Tei says:

I was afraid the new cast would suck, but they seem ok at this point. Especially the smart mouth business guy. I may buy L4D2 after all…
22/10/2009 at 22:29 Jorlin says:
I played the demo of the first one and it was just shooting Zombies in the face. Sure… it might be more fun doing this as a team of real mates… but in the end it just boils down to running, more Zombies without AI (you might call AI here: just putting more and more enemies on the screen) and shooting… This trailer does not convince me that there is any more to it… I really hope that this fails (although I already know it will not)… I hope that Valve is working on some awesome stuff regarding a “smart” FPS… (I do not want to mention HL – which I obviously did right now – but that is sort of what I am looking forward to when thinking of valve…)
22/10/2009 at 22:38 Tei says:
Zombies aren’t not smart. I mean, if theres a “realitic AI” for zombies sould be walk slowly in straighline to a survivor to eat his brains.
But I get what you mean. You want a different game. And no. This is a sequel. If you want something that feel different, buy a different game :-/
22/10/2009 at 22:40 Vinraith says:
It definitely falls into the category of “frantic action shooter.” How much fun you get out of it will entirely depend on how long you find that kind of thing entertaining, and how many friends you have that also play the game.
If you’re only in to “thinky” shooters, it’s almost certainly not worth your while.
22/10/2009 at 23:03 Inanimotioon says:
You sir, need to try playing VS. mode.
22/10/2009 at 23:06 Vinraith says:
Ugh. Unless you have seven friends, versus is representative of the very worst online shooter communities have to offer. Also, it forces you to spend half your time playing the infected, which is an unpleasant chore IMO. Even with all that, it's not all that thoughtful either, certainly not in the sense of a game like Half Life (let alone a real tactical shooter).
22/10/2009 at 23:14 Arathain says:
As a counter to this, I spend most of my L4D time (and I still play regularly) in Versus, playing with pick-up groups. While there are surely days I can’t log onto a server without finding unpleasant folk, or those who will not work together, I enjoy the majority of games I play, and the people I play them with. I love playing as the Infected- the camaraderie is usually better, and there’s a real art to a successful attack.
As an aside, I’ll take poor players who talk to you over competent but silent players any time. Communication being so important, I tend to win the former sort of games slightly more often.
22/10/2009 at 22:30 Stense says:
Mmmmmm, chocolate helicopters. Can I get a flake with that?

22/10/2009 at 23:26 Vinraith says:
I thought the “mechanic” character (I can’t help but mentally call him Cooter) had a fairly grating accent, but the others seemed fine to me.
23/10/2009 at 02:48 Psychopomp says:
I can’t stress enough, that people from Louisiana actually sound like that.
23/10/2009 at 03:50 yutt says:
I love these comments. You can *never* have in accent in a video game without someone claiming it isn’t “genuine”. As if there aren’t vast variations in regional accents. The voice actors could be from Louisiana and have lived there their entire life, and you’d still get a dozen people in forums claiming the accent wasn’t genuine.
Better yet are non-Americans complaining about TF2 accents. As if they were supposed to represent actual accents rather than caricatures. Guess what? Most Americans don’t sound like the Soldier either! That’s the point.
Gah!
23/10/2009 at 09:18 Ben L. says:
Well, perhaps. I’ve not had much experience with Louisiana accents in particular. In Georgia at least the drawl is generally much more pronounced.
23/10/2009 at 19:31 Psychopomp says:

This was rather different than the first trailer. Amazing, but more in the sense of a movie trailer with segments from different parts, humor and drama mixed in, whereas the first trailer was pseudo-tutorial-drama-coherent-plot.
This was the first time I’ve really paid attention to the characters, too, and it’s good to see they’re pretty personable people as well.

22/10/2009 at 23:49 Lack_26 says:
Nick is definitely my favourite character out of the new four, despite him getting a fairly low amount of air-time. Also, it was an excellent trailer, loved the stairs quip.
22/10/2009 at 23:55 Po0py says:
I like this. It has great sense of story and place. Shows off a great kind of survivor vibe. I hope we get more of that kind of passive survivor storytelling that always seems to hint at stuff that is going on in the rest of the town. I think the original L4D was good at it but only ever skimmed the surface of what was possible with that kind of storytelling.
Ultimately, though, I would like to see a kind of open world Left 4 Dead where you have this sprawling city full of zombies with multiple escape route options where you and your friends can just explore and find different clues that might lead you to more objectives that will eventually lead you to a finale and rescue. I think a game like that is very possible and Valve should give it a shot. These episodes still only touch the surface of what is possible with this kind of survivor gameplay. Valve should get on it before someone else does.
23/10/2009 at 06:23 Psychopomp says:

23/10/2009 at 10:09 Po0py says:
No I haven’t Maybe I should. You kind of know that that is the direction Valve will ultimately take with the series. I suppose it is the next big step.
23/10/2009 at 10:42 Lack_26 says:

23/10/2009 at 02:26 Fumarole says:
What want to know is why people think these new folks lack character from just a few minutes of video. Surely no one fully appreciated Francis until they knew the one thing he didn’t hate. There are thousands of lines of dialogue for each character people, give it time before deciding.

***Wulf dons his Devil’s Advocate hat, as he’s so prone to do.
I like these survivors much more than the originals, the only one I’m not sure of is Ellis (the one most people seem to like).
Want to know why? Probably not, but I’m going to tell you anyway!
it’s because these characters seem to have a mild amount of depth to them. I bought CO, and the characters always seemed flat, as flat as Alex Vance. Yes, Alex is flat, one dimensional, a caricature of a pancake, a pretty face that people are so taken in by they don’t really notice how dull she is. Eli interested me more than Alex, and it’s something else when you long for an old guy to be tagging along behind you instead of… well, Alex.
Bloody hell, Alex… the Vorts were more–no, I’m getting off track here.
The thing is, the original survivors were likeable, charismatic, and funny, but they were also incredibly shallow, and people I couldn’t stand being around for too long.
Bill: Hi, I’m the army guy, I have a militaristic mindset and a beret! I’m also very succinct! :D
Zoey: Hi, I’m Al–no wait, I’m Alex reskinn–no, they told me not to say that. Uhh… I’m Zoey! :D
Francis: Hi! I’m Francis and I’m a bad leather bear/biker gang parody. You can be too! :D
Louis: Hi… I’m Louis, I’m the only mildly interesting person here, and I probably work in accounting. :[
Gods that’s going to piss people off. Oh well.
The thing is, these new folks seem to have a much more grown up air to them, they seem like people and less one dimensional. I worry about Ellis, but he has this naive kid charm to him that just might work, as long as they don’t just make him a clone of the Scout, he could work out. The Coach, Rochelle, and Nick I’m actually fascinated by. They seem more like actual people, and they have more believable conversations.
“Run or shoot?!” was funny and all, as was “Pills here!”, but the original survivors never endeared themselves to me as real people. They were cardboard cutouts, they said stuff that I couldn’t really deign interesting. Well, except for Louis, Louis made me smile once or twice.
I don’t know, maybe reading The Walking Dead (Kirkman’s comic) has shown me how startlingly marvellous, touching, and even emotionally jarring a story featuring zombies can be. Kirkman can really write, you know? Post Kirkman, the original survivors amount to jack and squat as far as their writing is concerned.
This? This looks like they took a page RIGHT from The Walking Dead, which, consequently, also featured Southerners.

@Wulf, Re: characters deep
I have the doubtfull luck to no speak english. So I have no idea what the characters say. I have to get track with visuals. And the visuals have some problems, and some Glory.
First, visuals are a bit cartonized now. The coach guy looks somewhat like the Heavy of TF2, and the scout Dude looks like the Scout dude of TF2. Maybe the smoothtalking guy in white gear is different. This is the cartonification. The glory thing is the epic size of events. Now we see whole cities, whole bridges exploding, … L4D video is like “28 days latter” and L4D2 is somewhat like “Aliens 2″. If you know what I mean.
Anyway, this is a video, not a game. It seems that everything will change, but the game, that will be the same. I have flashbacks to the Gatopardo. …

Must. Have. L4D2. Now.

No I haven’t Maybe I should. You kind of know that that is the direction Valve will ultimately take with the series. I suppose it is the next big step.
23/10/2009 at 10:09 Supraliminal says:
Nicely done Valve, as always. You really can do top notch animation and epic scenes (the bridge explosion, sweet )
Though, this one was more of a show off , due to the somewhat serious nature of L4D series, and a bit cliched. The humor was subtle not just everywhere, like in the TF movies.
It didn’t bother me.

I have a right L4D2 on now.
And I will have it all day, until I see my borderlands pre load finish then I’ll get all excited about that.

Somewhat unimpressed, compared to the L4D Trailer/intro movie. That both taught you how to play the game by watching it as well as being very, very intense, much like playing the game was. This was a fairly uninteresting montage, although it does make the new game look like it has a lot more dramatic moments than the first one. Not sure if that is a good thing though, and I still don’t like the idea of all the campaigns being part of one longer story. I’m much happier with the idea of a bunch of “what ifs” for the first L4D. We’ll see how this one works out in campaign structure.
23/10/2009 at 11:36 AlmostGold says:
Who is it who says “I have not. Come this far. To die now.” at the end? It didn’t sound like any of the survivors to me, which means it could be a zombie overlord (should such a thing exist).
Also, did anyone notice that it was always the cocky kid who got nabbed by boss zombies?

You know I’ve really warmed to these characters now, their facial expressions and behvaiour completely sets them apart from L4D’s now frankly flat and generic characters. In l4d 1 they felt like video game characters, here they feel like real people, or at least film characters – from a good film.
Just a simple thing like Coach eating a chocolate bar instanly adds a far more human asspect to him, just because you see him consume food which apart from in STALKER no other video game has done… as far as i can remember. The realistic banter, that INSANE chainsaw! This far surpases nearly anything else valve have done.
23/10/2009 at 21:30 Vinraith says:
Err, you do understand that this is a pre-rendered cinematic, not actual game play footage, right?
23/10/2009 at 21:19 Railick says:
People eat food in all sorts of video games Fullbleed I dunno where you come up with that just off the top of my head Oblivion is a good example people eat food and drink from mugs / bottles and that doesn't make them any more realistic.]
I do like the new characters however. I didn't actaully like any of the ones from L4D I found myself looking at them thinking "I don't want to be ANY of these people" I normally ended up picking Louis or Francis.
I really liked the facial animations in this movie they seemed very life like, I can't wait until they get that sort of animation INTO the game itself . I would also really love to get that sort of chain saw cutting into the game.
23/10/2009 at 23:57 Fullbleed says:
Ok i was fully expecting to be made an idiot after that statment, and yes I’m fully aware that Coach wont eat chocolate bars in the game.
I still think it makes him seem more life like, acting like an ordinary human being and not a stereotyped character, I imagine fighting the zombie apocalpse is hungry work. I also really like the way the woman (cant spell rochell) pushes the gun away when reading the map, something subtle like that adds so much to her character showing she really doesn’t want to be there and that she shuns violence unless nessecary, completely setting her apart from most female characters in games. She’s not a Lara Croft cold bitch who wears impractially skimpy slothes, she listens to Depeche Mode!
Also the day light setting feels like an improvement, the other L4D never actually felt like a zombie apocalypse.
24/10/2009 at 00:01 Railick says:
Yes there is something about the day light that really brings it all home. at night it seems like it could all be one long nightmare but when the sun comes up and there are still infected people every where you know you're in trouble :P (if you didn't believe before) Which is kind of reflected when Rochelle keeps saying "This isn't happening, this isn't happening"

Francis is essentially Jayne from Firefly. Grumpy, gruff, crude, mostly trustworthy but not always, wants to be mucho macho badass but is saddled with a “sissy” name that he feels rather subconsciously insecure about.
At any rate, that’s how I saw him. Figured the Valve writing staff are big Firefly / Whedon fans.
24/10/2009 at 17:38 DarkNoghri says:
I’ve been saying this for a while now. Incidentally, Francis is my favorite character.
25/10/2009 at 11:48 Funky Badger says:
Wrong.
Jayne is the best character, by far, in Firefly.
Francis is the worst, by far, character in L4D.
And the useless big lummox looks just like a zombie.
