What is it about train sims that give their creators the right to give them crappy names and get away with it ? I understand Microsoft Train Simulator I mean that is a given as they have Microsoft Flight Simulator you don't expect much from them any how :P

But naming a sim Trainz?! Or OpenBVE or RailWorks? Could you imagine if Aces Over Europe (Which is a fantastic name IMO) named their Planz n Bombz (which actaully isn't that bad) or FighterWorks :P

They might make more people interested if the packaged it correctly, give it a good name a snazy box maybe some ads on TV with an excited sounding person explaining how all your childhood dreams can finally come true without years of TRAINING (Get it ? wahaha) required to be a real conductor or whatever you call the dude that drives the train?

Instead we get numbers 13 trains over 10 locations, woo so what? I'd rather have 1 train and the entire United States to explore it with (make that train extremely detailed with the ability to walk around in first person in all that places you could really walk in a real train) and then ontop of that add a business simulation aspect or job simulation aspect where you have to make a certain time without doing x amount of damage to the train to keep playing ? I dunno ^_^ Maybe Free Lance Train Tycoon , the year is 2020 and all aross the world rail road tracks lay unused as faster airplanes and trucks take over the freight business! YOU, the owner of a newer stronger faster train have become the last train owner in the world, it is up to you to build up an empire from nothing, taking back the freight industry with your iron fist! Upgrade rails across the world to make them faster/safer/more reliable than the latest planes and trucks. Speed across entire countries in minutes with your state of the air mag train. I dunno ! Something exciting. I'm really tired :( my mind is fried.

He cleverly dodged the issue of realism, i.e. just about everything openBVE has, by saying OpenBVE is going in a different direction. ( Whatever that means, I thought it was a trainsim too? )
I guess we'd best not hold our breathes for realistic cab-sway, suspension, headlight beams or raindrops. Think I might give Trainz 2010 a look. :(

I've always wanted to work on a train (probably passanger train) Or a barge sailing down the Mississippi bound for New Orleans or something.

@nakke:

But, in FSX you can find many of that stuff free of charge and you can find free addons that doesn't require that you buy X addon plus Z pack and Y locos to work.

Railworks lacks freeware, and lacks physics, and many many many stuff. It has promise, so much promise that I check their blog everyday.

Some great images there, and thanks for covering a relatively off-the-wall topic.

It's funny, I should be the ideal target market, being a) keen on videogames and b) keen on trains, but so far I've resisted all the train sims apart from Densha De Go (the PSP one with video footage rather than 3D graphics). I suspect it's because I like model railways and I'm afraid of turning a hobby into a job...

/me goes back to finishing my Indiana Jones layout - one week to the exhibition :(

also, i would very much like to hear more about the career / achievement side on this blog when they are implemented. that could tip me over the edge and make me buy it. just been a bit wary of train sims since the trainz stuff i played bored me to tears.

I crave for someone to make a hybrid between train sim and Transport Tycoon.

The mere thought of being able to drive my own trains in TT ... makes me all fuzzy inside... my pants..

Good game- maybe not as realistic as MSTS but a lot more accessible in my eyes. Graphically it also miles better and that makes a big difference to me as someone who likes trains but am not an enthusiast.
