The demo for Runic Games’ charming-looking hack ‘n slash RPG Torchlight is up on Steam, and should be appear on non-Steam mirrors soon too. The full game is also out this week on Runic Games own site, and we’ve been delving into the randomly generated dungeon levels so that we can offer our own verdict later in the week.

Is there a button to automatically collect loot?

Gotta say it kinda bored me. I had the same problem with Sacred 2 about the half-way mark. And BTW Sacred 2 can probably be picked up for less than Torchlight and is a far deeper and more involved game. Hmm.

I was playing a warrior, up to level 8 and just quit out halfway through a level after figuring it wasn't going to get much more involved. I usually love these things but giving up on both Torchlight and Sacred 2 in the last few months… makes me nervous for D3…

As we grow older our tastes in games change just like our tastes in food ;) Then again Torchlight and Sacred 2 are both indie games where as D3 should be a huge freaking block buster ( SHOULD be) So maybe you'll still like it regardless.

Torchlight's loot system is probably my favorite since D2 allowing you to collect OR create very powerful items with the enchantment system. I had a weapon in Fate that had about 20 things on it and 5 slots : P Then you can even take that item and pass it down to your next character where it will be even stronger.

TBH I think I'll give it a second go as a caster. I normally play a meatshield but remember having a huge amount of fun with a poison Necro in D2.

  4. Railick says:

I'm kind of surprised that playing as the caster actually allows you to build a pretty meaty warrior. You can specialize in armor and dual wielding offensive weapons to make your Alchemist a fighter (and then give him a smattering of other skills to make him more like a paladin like the Ember shield) There is no requirment to have previous skills to get higher levels skills either and they don't depend on each other so there is no reason to focus on one thing or another if you don't want to.

If you want really strong pets of course you'll focus on the middle one but I don't think you could possible spend ALL your skill points on pets (Don't forget you actaully get skill points for going up levels in Fame as well and there are quite a few of those to be had)

Dude, you ought to be on commission. I'm realising I skimmed over this game and now I want to buy it. Stop with the freaky mind tricks!! :)

  6. Railick says:

I'm not trying to sell it ! I'm just saying that is what I enjoyed about it.

I'm also going to get Diablo 3 when it comes out because the classes seem to be a lot more fleshed out. The Witch Dr looks freaking awesome with abilitys that help his pets but harm his enemies for example. Until then though I think Torchlight will scratch an itch I've been having for a long time (since Diablo 2)

    Plus it has shoulder pads!

  7. Railick says:

I've had my friends say that before when I describe a new game I've just gotten :P Sadly I only have the ability to sell games to people who probably would have gotten them already.

  8. Baris says:

You know, there's something about this game that really appeals to me, but I can't place it.

I really did not enjoy Diablo 2 the four times I've attempted to get through it, but I can't put Torchlight down, and I'm only playing the demo! I don't have the funds to buy the game right now, but you can keep buying dungeon scrolls and going through them as many times as you want. It caps you at level 7, but I haven't noticed a cap on Fame yet, it's also fun to just hunt for purple gear.

  9. Railick says:

And once you do get the full game your character can be continued from where you left off (it works I know :) )

  10. Thranx says:

This is a delightful game. Got some hands-on time at PAX, bought it first day off of steam. Very happy with my $20 purchase.

  11. Railick says:

Amazing but sad to see Torchlight is already being pirated in extreme amounts :( Just goes to show you those who pirate "to smite the big corps" and all that jazz are full of it. With such a small file size their's probably already been thousands of illegal downloads ect. Anyone who's gotten Torchlight this way I really suggest if you enjoy it to go ahead and buy it while it's still 20 bucks directly from their website if you ever want to see another game like it. (Or the mmo version of torchlight)

  12. Baris says:

Oh man, I wish you hadn't told me it's being pirated already. I respect the game far too much to actually pirate it, but it's going to be hell knowing that I could be playing it if I had looser morals about this sort of thing.

  13. Railick says:

I seem to be your devil for the day Baris ;)
