RPS Asks: Your Mod Recommendations?

By Jim Rossignol on October 26th, 2009.

For any game, of any genre, at any age: just make sure it’s available to download. Recommend us mods, tell us why they are great, and why should we play them. Should they be featured on RPS? Should they, like Air Buccaneers, be pulled from death and made to live again? You are their champions: speak your mods!

Hands On: Star Trek Online

By Kieron Gillen on October 26th, 2009.

As I mentioned earlier, I spent a lot of the weekend at the MCM Expo. I eventually managed to tear myself away from my table and go looking for electro-entertainment. Alas, mainly console – or console versions of PC games we’ve already covered like Borderlands. And Assassin’s Creed 2, which I would have looked at, but I was scared away by the Marge Simpson cosplayer who looks as if they’d peeled Marge and was wearing her yellow skin as a skin-suit ala Silence Of the Lamb’s Buffalo Bill. However, Star Trek Online was there, and I spent some time getting familiar with what Cryptic have been up to…

The Sunday Papers

By Kieron Gillen on October 26th, 2009.

Sundays are only Sundays because the clocks have gone back an hour today, so I better get a move on pulling together a compilation of the finest (mainly) videogame related reading from across the week, while trying not to slip in a pop-recording of some manner or another.

Interview: Paul Jackson On RailWorks

By Tim Stone on October 25th, 2009.

Usually when I meet a person that’s selfishly occupying one of my dream jobs, I end up spiking their drink, driving them out to a secluded Forestry Commission car park, and setting Bosnia and Hernia (my pedigree Romanian Fighting Badgers) on them. Paul Jackson, CEO of the company that makes train sim RailWorks, was lucky. He got away with a light grilling.

The RPS Bargain Bucket: Multi-Kill

By Lewie Procter on October 24th, 2009.

Big news over at SavyGamer folks. I’ve done a complete site redesign, and it is no longer ugly. Hooray! In terms of functionality, there is now categorised RSS feeds, so if you want to just follow the PC bargains, there is a separate feed for that. Enough shameless self promotion though, there’s bargain bucketeering to be done. Here’s your weekly digest of digital diversions.

Dragon Age Journeys Live, And Rather Good

By John Walker on October 24th, 2009.

I wish I could get a better action pic.

So Dragon Age Journeys is live, and… blimey, it’s good stuff. EA 2D’s free project designed to promote and link into Dragon Age: Origins is a 2D browser based RPG, letting you pick a character from the regular Dragon Age selection and then go exploring in the Dwarven Deep Roads. I wasn’t sure exactly how they’d do it, presuming something very simple, hack-n-slashy, but fun all the same. I wasn’t expecting a fully-fledged RPG with a unique combat mechanic.

It’s A Small World. Let’s Keep It That Way.

By Kieron Gillen on October 23rd, 2009.

It kind of reminds me of Jet Set Willy in some ways - but a dream of Jet Set Willy, as elegant as it was in my pre-teen imagination.

Just a quickie before I disappear for the weekend. Soren “Civ 4″ Johnson has just tweeted about Small Worlds, saying “What a beautiful game. This is the next-gen Prince of Persia game I always wanted to play…”. I agree, and think you should play it without any further elaboration. It’s a magically-presented exploration game. Magical. That’s the world. Go lose yourself.

Amping It Up: Dirt 2 & DirectX 11

By Jim Rossignol on October 23rd, 2009.

British wheel-game experts Codemasters specifically delayed the PC release of Dirt 2 so that they could inject DirectX 11 tech into the sinewy torso of their offroad racing sequel. Is that a good thing? We’ve got literally no idea, but we’re willing to venture a “probably, if you have a brand new graphics card, and happen to like racing games”, and then offer this new DirectX 11 trailer for your consideration. Can you see the eleveness? Also, there is some mocking.

Drunk & Disdwarvely: New Dragon Age Trailer

By John Walker on October 23rd, 2009.

Dwarves have a fine eye for architecture.

First of all, I’m very sorry for the headline. Moving on. The Dragon Age trailers, they will not stop. The latest is the reveal of the Dwarven potential party member Oghren, a fighter who can join your gang. As you’ll see in the trailer below, he’s brash, rude, and partial to the odd drink or seven, and at odds with the political state of his home city of Orzammar.

Extra Life Lessons: Game Over

By Kieron Gillen on October 23rd, 2009.

This was brought to my attention by a Usability & Accessibility Consultant, and quite interesting. It’s basically… well, a game as an example and a teaching tool, reminding me that someone doing an Understanding-Comics-esque thing – Understanding Games – would be a noble project. It’s called Game Over and each of its 21 levels – plus the actual intro screen – is designed to show an actual lesson about accessibility in games which developers can overlook. I admit, a lot aren’t really that interesting, but it shows itself best when highlighting things which developers actually often overlook (e.g. Colour Blindness). You can get it from here.

Legend Is Nigh: League of Legends Open Beta

By Kieron Gillen on October 23rd, 2009.

We’ve talked about League of Legends before. We’ve given away Beta keys before. We’ve danced sensuously in the moonlight, away from prying eyes, in naked, physical worship of our infinite Ursine god. But now the League of Legends Beta is open for the next week. If you’ve avoided the close beta, you can go and sign up for a free account here and have seven days of Defence of the Ancients-esque thrills. And inevitably be called a newb a lot. If you need explaination of the game’s concept, you’ll find a tutorial video below…
