Paper Crafty: Dragon Age Journeys

By John Walker on October 19th, 2009.

I love the South Park style.

BioWare, in the build up to Dragon Age: Origins, have revealed details of Dragon Age Journeys: The Deep Roads. It’s a Flash game, created in collaboration with BioWare by a new division of EA called EA 2D, designed to play as a prequel to the main game. Cor – let’s unpack all of that.

Star Trek Online: The Next Next Generation

By Alec Meer on October 19th, 2009.

Is that a Borg thing? Probably. Exciting!

Cryptic must really be feeling the pressure with their upcoming Star Trek MMO – it now has to both live up to the success of JJ Abram’s Pretty People In Space reboot and shrug off the so-so reviews which their last game, Champions Online, is tarred with. Their most recent response, oddly, is to really play up to the Star Trek hardcore…

Powerless To Resist: Addicsjon

By Alec Meer on October 19th, 2009.

More concept platforming from indieland, in this quickie tale of a pill-crazed cartoon junkie roaming surrealistic lands for his next fix. It’s a deft twist upon the Mario et al formula, in that you’re trying to avoid rather than collect spinning, gleaming objects – for every pill you jump through, the screen distorts and shakes further. Sounds easy, if only yer man wasn’t so determined to fight against you…

Heidi High: The Accu-Sim Piper Cub

By Tim Stone on October 18th, 2009.

We flight simmers are gaming’s reluctant hermits. We often go hours without seeing another polygonal personage. Sometimes we don’t even have our own arms and legs for company. It’s tough. Lonely. Thank heavens someone has finally sought to end the solitude. Not only is A2A Simulations‘ latest FSX adjunct – a Piper J-3 Cub – one of the most convincingly modelled sim steeds I’ve ever had the pleasure to pilot, it also comes with its own responsive cockpit companion, Heidi.

The Sunday Papers

By Kieron Gillen on October 18th, 2009.

Sundays are for waiting for a long-awaited Doom-3 mod to download while compiling a list of splendid (mainly) videogame related writing from across the week, while trying to resist linking to an archive of early nineties late-night TV music performances. Go!

  • Alec and I were at the Games Media Awards this week. We didn’t win, so spent our time being playfully bitter and stomping around. More seriously, I’m pulled between stressing the import of thesearetotallymeaninglessonlytheworkmatters and feeling happy that so many admirable people got recognised by their peers and kinda-peers. Man of the night was Pat Garratt of VG247, who swept every category he was in, including the Games Industry Legend award. Here’s what the ur-reporter wishes he said on stage. And here’s Tom “Tom Bramwell” Bramwell’s heart-on-sleeve recollections of the man. Not that he’s dead. He’s a living legend, you understand.

No Dedicated Servers for MW2?

By Jim Rossignol on October 18th, 2009.

Hmm! Over at BashAndSlash, a Call Of Duty community website, Infinity Ward’s community manager, Robert Bowling, confirmed there would be no dedicated server option for excruciatingly-anticipated super-shooter Modern Warfare 2. Really? Apparently so: dedicated servers will be replaced with a match-making service called IWNet. This will place you against players of your own rank, and remove dedicated server lists. There will also be options for a private matches. Take it with a pinch of salt, however, because the fact that it’s the community manager making an announcement two hours into a fan-podcast suggests there’s going to be some clarifying statements to follow. Bowling makes clear he’s not totally clear on the tech aspects, but he does seem certain that everything will run through IWNet, in conjunction with Steam. That seems to imply no mod support.

On the upside, the game isn’t delayed on PC after all. Ooh, what’s that noise?

The Wicket Man: Cricket Revolution

By Jim Rossignol on October 17th, 2009.

Yeah, I thought that was the actual ball at first glance. Shame really. Anyway, is Cricket season over? Or is that just in this hemisphere? I can never tell. Whatever the timeliness, multiplayer cricketing game Cricket Revolution has a demo out. You can get it here. The game boasts “unlockable deliveries, and batsman knock-out injuries”, which sounds nasty. There’s a bunch of offline stuff, apparently, so it’s not purely “PvP” cricket, in case that worried you. Trailer placed silly-mid click.

Saturday Comes: FIFA Manager 10 Demo

By Kieron Gillen on October 17th, 2009.

They gathered to stare at the enormous 100ft man. The man, himself, ignored their baying screams, and looked nonplussed. He knew soon he would have his revenge.

Yes, it really is the season for the football season. Following Championship Manager and Football Manager, we have EA’s just-shy-of-a-gig FIFA Manager. There’s a full list of features and improvements. The three way split between the management games, in terms of what resources each brings to bear, interests me. Football Manager has the rep. Championship Manager has the name. And FIFA have… well, the other name. Anyway – the trailer follows, which proves that Football Management games really are trying to avoid that Real Game Footage thing. Understandably.

AvP: The Alien Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on October 17th, 2009.

We remain quietly hopeful about the upcoming AvP game. If it manages to capture some of the terrifying atmosphere of the original game then we could be in for a treat. The one part of the jigsaw we haven’t yet seen in action was the alien itself, which gets fixed today. Eeech, face-huggers still give me the willies. And I wonder if the speed of the alien that we see here is representative of the game experience.

The RPS Bargain Bucket: Bundling

By Lewie Procter on October 17th, 2009.

I’d have liked to include Red Faction: Guerrilla in this weeks bargain bucket, because it’s a ton of fun, but THQ’s insane international pricing policies on Steam have kept it out. Instead we’ve got a wide selection of games from all over the globe, and in all different genres. Let the bargains being! The Three Musketeers RPG: One For All?

By Kieron Gillen on October 16th, 2009.

And now for some cheese on toast.

A Three Musketeer RPG? You have to admit, it’s a classic set-up for a Party-based RPG. This recently-released Indie RPG puts you as d’Artagnan and sets you off on adventures, following the actual plot of the novels. Which means, I’d imagine, that there’s not many twists for those who read it and/or watched Dogtanian and the Thee Muskehounds. Anyway – you can download the demo from here, order the full version here and watch its footage below…
