Thanks, for the interesting read. Regarding Steam and the space games thing, do they actually not allow some space themed games or what? I didn’t quite get the implication of Valve thinking that space games aren’t that popular on Steam.

No other service performs a “phone home” check every time you try to PLAY (not install) a game and locks you out of said game if said check fails. There’s no way around the fact that Steam is the most invasive of the popular digital distribution platforms .

Instant notice of new releases, simultaneous international release, comments about quality, multiple versions to pick from, no DRM, ripped versions for smaller downloads, even swift post-release support if it doesn’t work, and all in a file I can backup and store where I want. If torrents went commercial it would be the best service there is.

Some of the accusations people are making about Steam are hilarious. I don’t think you really know what you are talking about if you think one of these other services have that much over Valve’s service… I can understand not liking some of it’s features to an extent but it’s not like its some massively invasive program as some make it out to be.

Piracy is part of doing business, on any platform. How much money did they make as it stood, how much WOULD they have made if the price was even lower? And above all, how many pirates are really viable consumers? For them to play the victim and rake in millions upon millions is a bit much. Now business models are becoming so restrictive they have to be losing revenue because of that alone.

I’m not getting it, though it has zero to do with Steam. It mostly concerns the attitude they have towards the PC “version” of the game. At this point it’s a bit silly they even bothered.
