Also, here's a job listing from Bulgarian studio Masthead, who don't shy away from saying "PV13" and "Interplay", but still don't mention "Fallout".

(nothing particularly sensational in the text, a fairly standard programming job listing)

What makes it bleak is not the semi-desert environment, it's the lack of people.

In FO3 you can't throw a rock without hitting a random encounter.

I can't imagine a FO MMO doing any better.

These building aren't made of wood, unlike some of the stuff in FO3, though. I'm not sure if FOOL's place in the timeline is even known at this point, anyway.

"Earth Abides" by George R. Stewart is the classic post-apocalyptic (in this case disease) novel in which the way nature gradually reclaims civilization is shown. Great book. I re-read it every couple of years.

This looks a whole lot like that Fallout Borderlands mod.... probably not the same exact stuff though as this is supposed to come from a court case ruling etc.

As Starky has intoned, I think the choices made for Fallout 3 were more to do with aesthetic than any basis in reality. Besides in a game populated with giant ants, scorpions, gouls, super mutants, and an alternate time line where human culture has seemgly reached its zenith in the 1950s and stayed like that ever since, any discussions on what's realistic are largely academic.

Personally I think in terms of the game they made the right choice. A lush green environment with blue skies just wouldn't have felt like an irradiated waste land to me.

That said I wouldn't be at all opposed to a post apocalyptic game set in an environment where nature is reclaiming back the earth. Although it would be nice if the disaster that caused the apocalypse would be some thing other than a nuclear war for a change, oh, or some kind of virus that has turned the population into zombies. There's decades worth of great sci-fi out there to draw upon, and yet all we seem to end up with are post nuclear or zombie scenarios at the moment. Day of the Triffids anyone? Plenty of greenery in that scenario, and that it would also be trying to kill you, is surely a bonus.

I hope Interplay do get this - only so that Bethesda can concentrate on their single player masterpieces, and not some MMO dreck.
