Full On Mentalism: Elona Shooter

By Kieron Gillen on November 17th, 2009.

I haven't got very far yet. Because I'm useless. And Dragon Age is very long.

Yeah, I ruin the Zombie theme of the day by posting this. OR DO I? It’s a castle defence game – which, of course, are normally zombie-themed – from the creator of full-on-mentalist Rogue-game Elona. It’s called Elona Shooter and it’s proper full-on-mentalist. The idea is basically an Operation Wolf (Or, really, Walker) clone mixed with a party-based RPG mixed with the aforementioned full-on mentalism. And… oh, watch these videos in a compare and contrast…

Borderlands: Zombie Island Footage

By Jim Rossignol on November 17th, 2009.

UPDATE: Patch ahoy!

Zombies, zombies, zombies. We might as well rename the PC the Personal Zombie Slayer. Borderlands‘ zombie island DLC expansion, The Zombie Island Of Dr Ned, is out on consoles on the 24th of this month, and should be available for PC shortly thereafter. We’re still chasing the exact PC details from 2K. It features some freaky-looking zombies, Borderlands style, as well as “were-skags” (?) and promises to add another “six to ten hours” of game time.

RPS Electronic Wireless Show L4D2 Special

By John Walker on November 17th, 2009.

It's special.

While wandering the long, barren corridors of Valve HQ I stumbled upon Chet Faliszek and Erik Wolpaw, the two men who a few years ago made up the members of Old Man Murray. Bundling both of them into a big sack I carried them into a room packed with buzzing PCs and forced them to join in on a podcast to discuss the release of Left 4 Dead 2. You can listen to the results below.

RPS Left 4 Dead 2 Review

By John Walker on November 17th, 2009.

Hello fingertip!

Having had a chance to sit down with L4D2 on PC for a couple of days, playing all five campaigns, the new Realism and Scavenge modes, and a good chunk of Versus, I think it’s about time I told you wot I think.

Avatar Demo Released, In A Peculiar Place

By Alec Meer on November 17th, 2009.

With the conscious recklessness of talking about another game on Left 4 Dead 2 launch day, here’s something else you could play. It’s the demo of the game of big Jim Cameron’s film. Y’know, the film that’s supposed to be make everyone believe 3D is the future of cinema and, to steal Kieron’s line, looks like Braveheart with furries. The film and the game (which is akin to a slightly more open world third-person Halo if you play the humans, or rather more platformy if you play the elves Na’vi) both aren’t due out until December, but a demo has mysteriously appeared on the German Coke Zero site. English Demo, German website, American sugarfree fizzy beverage. Huh. Oh, and it’s only available until November 30. The 1.6Gb demo’s still downloading here, but I’ll update this post once I’ve given it a whirl.

Shattered Horizon To See “Moonrise”

By Jim Rossignol on November 16th, 2009.

Astronaut shooter Shattered Horizon will get a (free) four-map expansion in the near future. Testing on the new maps will begin soon, which is a good thing, as interesting space-levels are one of the best things about the game. “Selected players will help us test the new Moonrise levels from a very early stage,” says design lead Antti Summala, who we interviewed last month. “Level design for zero gravity combat is a big challenge and we are looking forward to having real players help us create new experiences that cannot be found in other FPS games.” The game is out now, and can be bought directly from the Shattered Horizon site. Check out my Eurogamer review for a verdict. There are also going to be Steam guest passes for existing players, soon.

Modem Warfare: Dedicated Servers Go

By Kieron Gillen on November 16th, 2009.

Yeah, I'm re-using screenies. Sue me. No, don't. I have no money.

This is cute. News from Destructoid via Seniath… well, that No Dedicated Server thing? Well, those ever determined fans have worked out a way to get dedicated servers working on their lonesome. Amazingly, they’re currently still ranked by IWNet. And the following video shows some of the stuff they’ve made the game be able to do.

Vampire Hunters: A Toothsome Morsel?

By Kieron Gillen on November 16th, 2009.

Bloody Vampires.

Nosing around for a quick post this morning, and a QT3 thread reminds me that I meant to investigate this further. But I didn’t. I’ll mention it here, mainly as a reach out to the RPS readership to see if anyone has fell to the scarlet longing and have an opinion on Vampire Hunters. It’s a Vampire RPG – but it’s an odd hybrid, where you have the adventuring part, then skip to a jRPG-turn-based mode for the battles. Annoyingly, there’s no demo, though you’ll find some footage below. From what’s on the site, it seems to be a World-of-Darkness derived thingy with “nosfaratu clans” – but the plot element is the murder which is investigated at the start is of the world’s most skilled Vampire Hunter. So God knows.
