this was and will forever be the only game i buyed a new PC for.
it was indexed in germany ( i was 14 when it came out) , but i knew a gamestore selling it to minors.. i bought it about 3 months before i even owned a system on which it could be played... i tried tricking the install software to put it on my fathers p1 233 with no hardware accelaration whatsoever.. failed miserably of course.
when i got my new pc, it was the first programm i installed after the 3D card drivers, even before i changed the background... played it through on the 2nd tier in 3 hours straight, then to the next tier... and so on. i completely feel the same way like alec when talking about skills back then and now.. the quake series dm multiplayer were the only games i was really really good at.

oh, and when about 3 years later my school got imacs (the blue cube ones, you remember) this was the only game that somehow wasn't blocked by the teachers... so as a proud member of the IT workgroup, we got the key to the PC room anytime we wanted to do some "programming & stuff".. good times. some of my dearest gaming memories connect to that game.

I have never played Quake 3. I have played the original UT multiplayer, i first played it in college over the LAN.
I did play Quake Live during it's beta and found it fun but frustrating due to the matching of the players skill. Some games i did pretty well against fellow noobs and in others i was constantly fragged by the pro's. Though the system has probably been improved since.

Just started playing Quake Live about a week ago, in search of a more twitch / skill based game after playing L4D competitively for a while. Last time I played Quake I was very young playing Quake 2 single player and deathmatch with bots on my first desktop, cost my mum $2000 with a 400MHz processor.

Quake Live is a lot of fun. It's a great feeling to be in the heat of battle constantly against real opponents who are thinking / doing like you, and trying to kill you.

Favourite time so far is winning a Free For All with 8 players "at my skill level", 50 kills to 19 deaths, which isn't amazing but it was very fun.

Its functional, has been functioning in various forms for about 2 years now, and its one of these things that is going to be a beta forever. No point waiting.

Play it or don’t snarky man.
Snarky maybe, but I'm still serious... this "permanent beta" nonsense is retarded, and as far as I'm concerned that label means that the developers are still actively hunting bugs and balancing gameplay. I blame Google primarily, but there's no reason for other people to follow them onto the stupidity wagon.

you take that back/fuck off! UT is every bit as solid as Quake 3, its characters are chunky and its weapons are not spammy. At least, not more so than any of Quake's. Can't stand any criticism of poor UT; it's just a different (and in my opinion, more interesting) flavour of old school deathmatch. And now it's utterly dead, which is a shame. I agree with you otherwise - Quake is built like a German car, with efficiency and precision, while UT is built like a French one, with baguettes.

I came to UT first, and Quake much later - only this year, after UT had died its final death and TF2 was holding the fort on its own. Now Quake Live is virtually all I play, as it's made me too impatient and irritable for anything else. Now i'm officially a fan as well as a massive nerd, so I can say happy birthday to a game :)

Happy birthday Q3A!

I love both UT and Q3A...UT for its variety but for pure DM, Q3A was superior. The feel (movement speed, weapons balance, chunky characters etc.) was more solid with Q3A vs the agile cheetahs and spammy weapons of UT.
