Panama Splat: Battlefield Bad Company 2

By Jim Rossignol on December 18th, 2009 at 12:29 pm.

Electronic Arts might be making a load of noise about reclaiming the FPS crown with the re-pumped Medal Of Honor, but I think they’re also making decent headway in that area with the Bad Company sequel. What we’ve seen so far from the multiplayer sessions has been very exciting, and the latest footage from the game’s “Panama Canal” map looks just as intense – particularly the quad-bike stuff. After that they could throw us a Battlefield 3 bone, and we’d be happy manshooters. Go take a gander at the footage below.

    OH NO THEY DID NOT SPELL RECEIVE WRONG AT THE END

  2. That looks really nice.

    What’s up with BF3, though? Is it not due out for another couple of years? Because I seem to recall hearing it’d also be a modern combat affair, and I’m not sure whether us PC gamers are supposed to go for BC2 or wait for BF3 – Battlefield titles are notoriously long-lived, so it wouldn’t make much sense to split the playerbase up like that.

    looks too violent compared to BF2…I think…

    i’ll play it nevertheless :]

    Too violent?

    Man up, for Christ’s sake.

    • ChaK_ says:

      my bad, I’m not english nor american, so I said the wrong word I guess.

      I don’t mean it’s shocking in any way, nor too violent, I mean it just seems restless and a little bit like UT with guns.

      I loved sneaking in BF2, circling around the map to be the bitch killing in the back, but this seems to be too much concentrated on the hollywood style action.

      I hope I’m wrong though, and I hope too i’ll be able to play my sneaky-bitchy-style =)

      and you have surmised that it will have none of this because of the trailer? the trailer that they presumably packed the action in because it’s a trailer

    We clearly need a better algorithm for weapon bobbing..

    the current algoritm seems something like that:

    yawoffset = sin( time() ) ;
    heighoffset = sin( time() + 12345 );

    weaponpos[ yaw ] += yawoffset ;
    weaponpos[ height ] += heighoffset;

    it looks too syntetic, fake, plastic, not biologic at all, and break my inmersion.

    Also, If a tank shot, and you are really near, I expect a effect alike a explosion of a grenade, if the sound “temporal mute” of call of duty.

    • You’ve been giving this a lot of thought haven’t you? An interesting observation nonetheless. Anyway, this game does look pretty intense, but I might have to put it behind Metro 2033 just for that spelling mistake, that and Metro 2033 looks really interesting.

      Thank God I’m a Linguistics major and no longer require math, or my immersion would be put in peril as well.

    • WilPal says:

      A bobbing camera breaks your immersion?

      Wow…

    oh boy oh boy oh boy, please please let there be a project reality mod for this post release… PR with destructible environments and better gfx… yummy

      Its multiplatform so i’m not expecting decent mod tools.

      But god yes i would welcome modability with open arms.

    You know i’ve always wondered about the boobing algorithm in the Lara Croft games..

  9. Orberi says:

    Yes, yes they did. A spelling mistake in an ad. *sigh*

  10. Harper says:

    Aww c’mon… Like the advertising company never heard the rule “I before E except after C…”

    Anyway, I am definitely keeping my eye on this one after the whole MW2 debacle.

  11. Dan says:

    Looks like MW and UT3 had a baby. An angry, violent, baby with ADD and a key to the armoury.

    report

  12. Sean says:

    Yeah. Don’t worry about the sounds. There are some pretty cool sound effects from being near tank shell explosions. In fact, I cannot think of any sound effect in the game that has been done better somewhere else.

  13. Mike_in_Ohio says:

    Looks rather tasty… move over MW2

    A replacement for BF 2142.

    Exxxxxxxxcellent.

  15. Iain says:

    Definetely getting this. Looks better than the first game, and that was great fun.

    *BOOM*

    “Ahhhh”

    *vrooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom*

    *atatatatatatatatatatatatatatatta*

    That is BF:BC 2, and I like it.

  17. vhati says:

    This one is fantastic. already been playing it.

    The best thing about it, it that it is not fatally flawed multiplayer like modern warfare.

    being completely hidden behind an object, but able to shoot at people because the POV is actually above a players head in MW2.

    Oh, and the gunplay is much more solid. Not to mention more weapons, gadgets. Vehicles. Larger maps. More players.

    Its frigging fantastic. I am on the PS3 beta, and cant wait for the PC beta in Jan. Best of all. Widescreen support for the first time in battlefield series.

    report

    • SirWhat says:

      well i could argue that they kinda supported widescreen in BF2 with 1.5 patch, but that would be just me being picky

      im waiting for this, buying it as soon as it becomes available in my country

      report

    • Howl says:

      Not *just* plain old yesteryear’s widescreen either, but EYEFINITY widescreen in wraparoundz, 48:9 goodness.

      report

  18. Poopscrubber says:

    It was most noticeable on the segment where the RPG player was riding shotgun on an ATV. A small quadbike like that would be rationally expected to shake the view with every bump and tumble.

    report

  19. Supraliminal says:

    That machinegun at 0:45 sounds like a helicopter.

    Or maybe it has a secret mobile alt.fire function..
    Now, that would be a weird weapon.

    report

  20. Rei Onryou says:

    I do like what I see. My only problem is that soldier/vehicle combat and myself don’t really get along. Soldier versus soldier and vehicle versus vehicle are usually great in games, but when you’re shooting other people and a tank comes and blows you up, that just seems a little unfair to me.

    Still, this looks flippin’ awesome!
