Hop On Board: Just Cause 2 Stunt Trailer

By John Walker on December 7th, 2009.

The only way to fly.

“It’s not realistic. We don’t want it to be realistic.” See, this is why I’m so looking forward to Just Cause 2. Fi-i-i-inally a game that isn’t trying to boast realism. But rather boast lunacy. The latest trailer shows off the vehicular stunts you can do, from tethering cars to statues, destroying sports cars off road, and just nonchalantly included in there, jumping from a private yet to a fullsize airliner. I might explode before this comes out.

Eurogamer: Half-Life Opposing Force Retro

By John Walker on December 6th, 2009.

He looks quite nice, I think.

This weekend I have been mostly playing Half-Life Opposing Force. Fortunately the thoughts I have as I play don’t have to stay confined in my strange little head, but instead are communicated to all the universe via the internet. It’s up on Eurogamer today, and has a bit in it that says this:

“There are definitely too many corny names for heroes in videogames. Pick up a random shooter and you’re bound to find yourself in control of someone called something like Dirk Death, or Rick Giantballs. Even Half-Life’s Gordon only keeps the nerd up for his first name, the surname sinking into the cliché of Freeman. Which is why we should celebrate the hero at the centre of Opposing Force. It’s Corporal Adrian Shephard. Has there ever been a central character for a game who sounds more like a geography supply teacher?”

Argue about whether it was Gordon’s first day of work below.

The Sunday Papers

By Kieron Gillen on December 6th, 2009.

Sundays are for listening to unlistenable indie rock bands at ATP. Which means that Thursdays are for compiling a list of the fine mainly games-related reading from across the week into a list for your delectation, while trying to avoid linking to something related to pop music.

Streamin’ Eagles: VFAT 2009

By Tim Stone on December 6th, 2009.

http://www.ukrfalcons.com/

While one wing of the flight sim community strives to keep aircraft as far apart as possible, another delights in putting them dangerously close. The Virtual Festival of Aerobatic Teams, now in its 5th year, is currently midway through a weekend of extraordinarily skilful formation flying displays. Catch the live Lock On-powered action here from 14.30 GMT. Read the rest of this entry »

Silent Running: Silent Hunter 5

By Jim Rossignol on December 6th, 2009.

This Silent Hunter 5 trailer reveals the new game engine in action, and it’s pretty damned spectacular. There’s not going to be any debate about what the best looking naval sim is after this hits, at least. Whether the rest of the game lives up to the legacy of the series remains to be seen, but we’re feeling fairly optimistic. Anyway, this is worth taking a look at, even if you’re not a naval sim type. It has excellent waves.

Guild Wars 2 Reveals Its Races

By Jim Rossignol on December 6th, 2009.

“I am Logan, defender of the generic medieval bit!” But it gets better from there, with Guild Wars 2‘s take on the gnome, the giant Charr, and others. Once again we get to glimpse some of the game’s absurdly beautiful level design, which remains at the forefront of things we find interesting about this sequel. There’s some more detail on the races over on the official website.

The various digital distribution outlets from around the internet are starting to get into the festive season, and are discounting their games accordingly. We’ve got a pair of advent calendars to keep an eye on, no chocolate sadly though, just discounted computer games. To keep a closer eye on what’s going on in the Christmas sales, be sure to visit SavyGamer.co.uk.

Rock Paper Shotgunity, Part Four

By Jim Rossignol on December 5th, 2009.

It’s saturday, I’m awake, so it must be time for Build 02 of Rock, Paper, Shotgunity and the fourth post in our series about making a game from scratch. At the risk of repeating myself, I should explain: we’re making a game using the newly-free Unity game development tools. Why not catch up on the story so far and then read on? This week I said I’d be taking a look at some Unity Packages as well as continuing to refine Shotgunity in general following the release of Build 01 last saturday. So how did that go? Find out after the jump.

Me, Myself & I: The Company Of Myself

By Alec Meer on December 4th, 2009.

That there are now so very many indie platformers which concern solving puzzles with the assistance of time-echoes of one’s past self must be some sort of arch-irony. Perhaps they’re all in fact the same game, returned armed with experience earned from their past incarnations? It could only be that. There’s no other possible explanation for this trend. It couldn’t be something as far-fetched as time-cloning being a concept that imbues a game with clever puzzles, but without the necessity for high budgets and graphical complexity. Couldn’t be. And, certainly, the Company of Myself is a clever wee game. It also features a top hat, which is a sure-fire way to earn our attention.
