Curran Affairs: Global Game Jam Keynote

By Kieron Gillen on January 31st, 2010.

Ste is totally channeling his early-00s TOO DEAD FOR ME!!!! Atari Teenage Riot fantasies here.

Here’s Ste Curran’s keynote for the current Global Game Jam. Ste was the main face behind classic Edge columnist Redeye’s mask, one third of One Life Left and creative director of console-toy supremos Zoe-Mode. He has things to say. He’s worth listening to.

The Sunday Papers

By Kieron Gillen on January 31st, 2010.

Sundays are for sipping tea, wondering whether you’re going to be able to find any time to play a game with all the shit you have to write today (or maybe go see Los Campesinos at Rough Trade) and compiling a list of interesting games-related reading from across the week, while trying to resist posting a link to some manner of pop music that caught my (and Walker’s for that matter) ear. Go!

The RPS Bargain Bucket: Endless Battle

By Lewie Procter on January 30th, 2010.

Pretty great, varied, selection of games to be had at a discount this fair weekend, although I am beginning to wonder if we’ll ever have just one bargain bucket that doesn’t highlight the discrepancies of international pricing. There is much more cheapness to be had at SavyGamer (including a nice little scam to get into the Battlefield Bad Company 2 beta without committing to buying the game). BARGAINS GO:

Vampires Vs Werewolves in BFH

By Jim Rossignol on January 30th, 2010.

So here’s a thing: Werewolves and Vampires are being added to free FPS Battlefield Heroes. It’s some kind of micro-payment event, lasting a month, where you can pay to be able to rise again in the night maps of the game. “Once-dead Nationals can be transformed into blood-sucking vampires and Royals into teeth bearing werewolves.” Okay then. A trailer, below, explains a bit more.

Rock, Paper, Shotgunity – PenultaBuild!

By Jim Rossignol on January 30th, 2010.

This was supposed to be the last build of Shotgunity, the game we’ve been making using the free Unity development suite, with Build 8.1 (NEW LINK). Starting from scratch, with no prior knowledge of Unity, or indeed any type of coding, we planned to make a game based on RPS by today. Did we hit our deadline? Did we hell. But find out how surprisingly far we got after the cut.

Valve Announce 25 Million Users For Steam

By John Walker on January 29th, 2010.

His head swells with money.

Valve have announced the latest stats about Steam’s performance in 2009. If I were to plot them on a graph they would go off the top of the paper and I’d have to draw on the desk. Which would leave no room for a title. And my graph would be marked down. Steam now has over 25 million users. Which is a 25% increase over the year. Which means Gabe Newell’s throne made of diamonds is now 25% sparklier. And all in the week when GoG.com founder, Marcin Iwiński, called Steam “malware”.

Happening: Liberty City Episodes On PC

By Jim Rossignol on January 29th, 2010.

The Almighty K has news that Rockstar intend to release Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, the double pack that includes standalone adventures The Ballad Of Gay Tony and The Lost and Damned, which were both release to the Xbox in 2009. The release will happen in March, and the pack will cost about $40. I’ve not played either of these, so I can’t really comment on the worth of this, but hey, at least GTA4 runs on my PC now I upgraded my CPU and memory to way more than I really need.

VVVVVV for Vendetta: VVVVVV Interview

By Kieron Gillen on January 29th, 2010.

VVVVVV has been my favourite game of the year so far. Small, perfectly formed and highly punishing, it reminds me of some of my favourite games – and girlfriends, for that matter – of years gone by… without really being like any of them. It’s a dream of the past, retro as an idea rather than simple recapitulation. After writing a Wot I Think, I decided it was time to talk to Mr Distractionware – Terry Cavanagh – about all things VVVVVV. Discover below why the Jet Set Willy comparisons aren’t quite right, the thinking behind the pricing decision and lots more…

Mass Effect 2 Savegame Scandal/Salvation

By Alec Meer on January 29th, 2010.

I tried to post this yesterday, but the blog’s back end mysteriously ate all my words so I gave up in a huff. I believe it to be the machinations of Loki, the Norse trickster god, and villain of children’s picturebook Thor #606, written by Karen Gillan and on sale now in all good Early Learning Centres. Anyway – like half the world I’ve been making first inroads into Mass Effect 2 this week. As I played the first game on -hisssss! – 360 rather than PC, I was resigned to not being able to import my old character. But Bioware mentioned there’d be a KOTOR 2-esque mechanic in which a few conversational choices established what I’d done in ME1 and made ME2′s status quo broadly reflect it.

They changed their minds. At the point where I’m pretty sure this conversation would have happened (an interview to check the [this word is spoiler-censored] Shepherd’s got all their marbles), I was instead simply told what had happened. It wasn’t what had happened. ME1 spoilers below, so skip right to the end if you’ve not finished that yet.

B’lands: The Secret Armory of General Knoxx

By Jim Rossignol on January 29th, 2010.

Gearbox have announced, but not dated, another piece of DLC for Borderlands. Here’s the blurb:

“This DLC extends the Borderlands experience, providing new challenges and opportunities for growth for characters from around level 34 to level 50. Growth for characters at 50? Yeah, that’s right, we’ve raised the level cap; even players who think they’ve seen it all have tons more to do! The Secret Armory of General Knoxx offers hours of thrilling shooting and looting for Borderlands players!”

Quick comments poll: How many of you bought some Borderlands DLC? Will you get more?

Money Tips: How To Afford Indie Games

By John Walker on January 28th, 2010.

Maybe don't have Dominos Pizza this week?

As all readers of RPS know, I love them very much. (Especially the subscribers who just received three awesome secret offers today.) But as in all relationships, sometimes there’s friction. Like when people complain that $15 is too much for an indie game. Michael Lee (I thinkhe could maybe put his name/business on his website) of Ludoko Studios and the incredibly bold One Week/Game project, has written a handy guide for how to be able to afford to spend such riches on a game on his blog, GameDrinkCode. You can read it here. (Via @MituK)
