Update: And STOP! All 1000 have just gone. You’ll know if you were successful very soon.
We like to think we take care of you. For instance, if you were ever in trouble, we’d maybe look up from what we were doing. We also like to give you magical presents. So today we’ve got 1000 keys for the Star Trek Online open beta to give away. (All gone.)
We’re going to give them to the first 1000 people to email us at compo@rockpapershotgun.com (making sure to use the subject line “I would like to be a Star Trek Online Beta-zoid” or you definitely won’t get a key), nothing more complicated than that. So be quick, or be sad. Then so soon as the fine folk at Cryptic send them out, you’ll find out if you have free access to the open beta for the game until the 26th January. RPS subscribers have already had their chance to reserve a key, by the way. If you’d like to be a part of that exclusive crowd, you can click here.
Star Trek Online is out on the 29th of Jan, and you can find out more about it here.

I’m finding that getting a key isn’t the hard part, managing to download the client is.

Best mirror I’ve found so far, seems pretty decent speed wise.
14/01/2010 at 14:47 Jim Rossignol says:
Surely there’s a decent torrent by now?
14/01/2010 at 19:55 Andy says:
There is an official torrent, but its not going particularly great for me (average 168k/s when my max is 1000k/s)……
14/01/2010 at 13:49 Mr Pink says:
I used the official torrent, it downloaded overnight.
14/01/2010 at 13:57 Simes says:
So far so Champions, in that case.

14/01/2010 at 14:09 John Walker says:
Mine had to patch for about 5 hours, but then worked.

I wonder if they used my suggestion to construct a Weighted Companion Borg Cube.
Give me a key and let me find out :)
14/01/2010 at 14:39 dtgreen says:
E-mail sent, thought I’d give it a go even though I left MMO’s over 6 months ago. Is that a typo or do you guys really have 1000 keys? If it’s accurate, wowzers!

Same problem here. We discussed the issue when the site relaunched, but it doesnt seem that anybody hast found a solution yet. Maybe we could pay for a year in advance or something.

14/01/2010 at 16:55 Ging says:
Had the email open in webmail at work just after the post went up, got a phone call, forgot to press send… may have just sent it without thinking.
I think this is made worse by me being a subscriber and proudly not checking my email in time for the newsletter of love.
Ah well, will just watch over the shoulders of others.

jebus cripes I got to the loo for a couple of minutes and this goes on and its over already. Truly sad. though to be honest I am not much interested in this so its better that a trek fan gets it.
14/01/2010 at 19:24 unacomn says:
Rats, didn’t get a key. But if anyone sees a Weighted Companion Borg Cube somewhere out there in the Delta, Pi, or Cake Quadrant, inform me.

14/01/2010 at 22:02 MookeyT says:
Dear RPS,
You have taken too long to inform me of winning a beta key, please rescind any and all possible winnings.
-MookeyT
14/01/2010 at 22:52 Tom OBedlam says:
Is that a flounce or have you been able to procure another one?
14/01/2010 at 22:57 Tom OBedlam says:
Sorry that reads a lot cattier when written down.
14/01/2010 at 23:00 Prankster says:
If i remember correctly, when you get a key from a site like this, it’s the publisher/dev that will send us the key. RPS will pass on all valid winners to them. I’d say they are in the process of sorting out 10s of thousands of keys over the course of the next couple of weeks, so i’d hunker down and just d/l the open beta client via a torrent ect for now.
15/01/2010 at 00:08 Paradukes says:
In most cases, true. In this case, many of the other sites were provided with the keys ahead of time. Also, what do you mean “over the next couple weeks”? The beta ends in ten days time :P
15/01/2010 at 01:59 Tom OBedlam says:
Mine’s just come through! Thanks!
15/01/2010 at 02:03 JTtessier says:

Also mine. Thanks RPS guys!
And FYI, I’m getting good download speeds (~800kB/s) for the client from gamershell.com. One of the UK servers, don’t remember which.
15/01/2010 at 03:16 Paradukes says:
Woo! Good thing I DLed the client already as a precaution :D
Now why couldn’t I have gotten the key before it was time to go to bed? :P
15/01/2010 at 04:17 Deekman says:
GOT MY ONE!
Thanks alot guys.
Now to download 6 gigs T_T
15/01/2010 at 09:08 Daedren says:

15/01/2010 at 15:48 Chris D says:
If you didn’t get a key here try over on Eurogamer right now.
(Hope it’s ok to say that here, RPS)
15/01/2010 at 16:38 MinisterofDOOM says:
Wow…this game runs like butt on my PC. Which is quite sad considering I can do Crysis at ~70fps. I hope it gets optimized. Right now it’s barely playable.
15/01/2010 at 17:32 Bascule42 says:
Cheers RPS…got ma key. I’m getting, (my top speed), 10Mpb/s, (1.21 MB/s) from the Atari mirror. But, my ISP will cut my speed by 75% if I continue right now. So, I’ve still got to wait ’till after 9pm tonight.
15/01/2010 at 18:07 Green Jelly Monster says:
Thanks for the Eurogamer tip.
DELTA QUADRANT HERE I COME!
15/01/2010 at 20:11 MrMud says:
The torrent worked wonders for downloading the game. Think I was at around 6MB/s after a few minutes.
Impressions so far is that I absolutely adore the look of the game and I think I may have a bit of a crush on my character http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y30/mrmud/sto-brissa.jpg?t=1263585845
Only problem, I dont see this lasting all that long (thats why the beta will probably be enough for me). Cryptic seems a bit to much like an MMO-mill and I just get the impression that they dont take their games as seriously as other companies would (especially having been spoiled by WoW).
15/01/2010 at 21:06 Roland says:
Thank you Mr RPS for the key.
I am not sure yet if I like it or not, I think I need to play it some first. But I am getting the feeling that it has the Trek side of things right but the actual gameplay side it not as good and a bit rough around the edges much like Champions Online was/is.
15/01/2010 at 21:13 Prankster says:
Thanks alot for the key RPS ! . Digging the game so far and will deffo play it for a few months.
15/01/2010 at 22:24 dadioflex says:
So… ship combat… I hate it. Opinions?
15/01/2010 at 23:11 Wichtel says:
Someone else playing right now? We could team up.
15/01/2010 at 23:36 dadioflex says:
Why does Star Trek Online have so many shopkeepers? Wouldn’t online retailers have put them out of business by now?
15/01/2010 at 23:52 dadioflex says:
Oh, teaming up will get you killed quicker than going alone according to the wreckage I’m sifting through on the official forums.
18/01/2010 at 00:00 Stromko says:
I’m really glad I got into the open beta, because if I paid for another game like this from Cryptic Studios, especially after Champions Online, I would’ve never forgiven myself. Yet, on the other hand, if I hadn’t tried the thing for myself I would have always regretted never knowing how ST:O turned out. Now I know and can just get on with my life, 60$ richer.
That RPS subscription is worth every penny is my point, folks.
I actually wish Cryptic Studios the best, I think they’ve had lots of great ideas, and Champions was actually a good example of how dynamic and interesting their stuff can be, even if it didn’t quite gel. With this current release cycle they’ve just been circling the drain, hopefully the next time they start developing a game they can start fresh and live up to their potential.
18/01/2010 at 18:52 Blackberries says:
Gaah. Had a busy weekend and had hoped to have the client by now, but two failed attempts using the fileshack mirror have left me betaless for now. Guess I’ll have to choose the stabler-but-slower torrent and leave it for a day.
