The Command & Conquer 4 multiplayer beta test will indeed be open, and it’s happening today. It’s scheduled for 9AM PST, which by my calculations is in about two hours. You’ll want to be keep an eye over here for details.
Oh, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 multiplayer beta is up too. Grab those keys where you can. We haven’t got any, obviously, because why would we want them? Eh? EH? But our chums over at Fileplay have some, so keep an eye on them too.

I miss Dave Tosser.
(sigh)
No I don’t.
report
Dave Tosser says: games shouldn’t have betas. If developers have enough time so as to test their game, they should be developing a sequel instead. Bug fixes don’t generate profit, sequels do.
Sorry, had to try :P
report
Good one. I give it a “B+”. This post is in desperate need of Mr. Tosser.
report
Nice try :)
report
In fairness it was obvious Dave was going to get repetitive fairly quickly. In that unique way that industry shills always do.
Still. I miss him.
report
It’s turning out to be an exciting day what with Mass Effect 2 arriving on my doorstep this morning. Not sure if i want to bother with the C&C 4 beta business. The latest games have been really awful.

New and improved Tiberium anti-aging cream! “I look 15 years younger!” – Joe Kucan
Seriously, he hasn’t aged… should’ve been on LOST
report
Thanks for the heads up. Not sure if gamespot requires you to be a paying member or not? I signed up anyway. Having played all the other C&C games I guess I have to play this one. Tiberian Sun is still my fav, if for no other reason than the fact you got to build gates!, electric gates! it was a Turtler’s Heaven!
report
No worries you don’t have to be a paying member. Tiberian Sun was my favourite too and probably the last one in the series I enjoyed. Still, those gates and walls were one of the main reasons for my love. C&C at it’s best.

*Hi five’s Isometric* :)

I also miss Dave the Tosser, this being the first post without him. Maybe he isn’t required for every post… but please, don’t retire him completely. We were just starting to get a sense of him, as a person, in the last article. I think it would be unfortunate if we
were to be robbed of the opportunity to witness his growth and developmentdidn’t get to see that wonderful/horrible amalgam of every ones faces.report
Yes, who will bring us our ancillary bonuses now?!

Guys, don’t let me venture into other websites comments again. Please.
report
rofl! I dare to think what crevice you fell into to find that comment.
report
urgh gamespot is loathsome. I’m sure Dave the Tosser would disagree and say something like “Gamespot are a sound investment for advertising and game reviews” then begin to cackle under his breath.
report
I didn’t find the latest C&C games very good (go Tiberian Sun! ;D), so I’m not very interested in that one.
The BFBC2 Beta I am interested in however – since I preordered it recently, and I’ve got a key! And it was just made ready for download three minute ago! But as I suspected, their site is overloaded with traffic and I will probably be unable to play tonight. GJ, EA. I’ll go see if there are any other ways of downloading the client…
report
Wow fantastic, fileplay just crashes the minute before I could get a key…probably all taken now, or hopefully it crashes for everyone. Why do pc users need a beta key but console gamers get the demo today no matter what for Bad Company 2?
report
Gah! It appears that any site that might be hosting the Beta client download is overloaded with traffic. Wow. If i could just get the client over Steam or a link to the torrent file, this would be all solved…
EDIT: I snooped it up on FilePlanet, even their site is sluggish! Probably cause I’m not the only one rushing there.
*sigh* 30 minutes of wait for an american donwload server. At least It’s just a 1,5 gig client.
Link for anyone interested: http://www.fileplanet.com/209408/download/Battlefield:-Bad-Company-2—Beta-Client (and yes, it does say “Closed Beta RC1″, dunno why as it was released today)
report
I can’t even log into my EA account let alone download the client. This thing’s going slower than a snail stuck in chewing gum whilst on Valium!
report
HAH!
“FilePlanet Download System
Unable to add to line
This server is currently full or not accepting new connections at this time. ”
Now look what you did to the poor internets, EA!
report
Davee – your link has broken fileplanet’s internet. I have tried it twice now and their sever is freaking out trying to load different pages, giving up and trying new ones. Hmm…
report
What a good timing! Saw the post just a minute before they went available, and happen to grab one within the seconds.
report
FOR BFBC2 – Fileplay is undergoing “essential maintenance” – read… site is being hammered.
And Gamespot say they have require you to be US and have a PSN account and have a Gamespot account to get a key.
If anyone finds a way of getting a key don’t be shy.
report
Or even a way to download the freaking thing :)
Oh, and sorry for the spam. It seems RPS is the only current site of interest atm that is still working…
report
Lol ^^
report
Looks like Fileplay is getting rammed hard but I did managed to get a code from GameSpot.
Hurrah for betas eh?
report
Yup Fileplay has melted atm
report
On another note: Google searches for “Battlefield Bad company 2 beta download” and the like rose by about 30% in half an hour it seems.
From official BFBC2 Twitter feed:
“battlefieldbadcompany2.com/beta is experiencing EXTREMLY high traffic. @GordonVanDyke can’t even access the blog to post alt sites. :-(“
report
I noticed that too. I followed this link http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/ and thought aha there she be. But no… all the download links are bull. I have tried 5 now and none actually take you to the file!
report
Fileplay is back up. Just got my key. Go go!
report
Now they’re down :p
Hrm. I’ll be back in about an hour, let’s hope EA got some non-overloaded servers to download from at that point.
report
I sabotaged it on my way out. ¬_¬
report
Boohoo :’(
“504 Gateway Time-out”
report
It’s gonna take some time, as they brought it back up it was hammered hard again, patience will be needed you will get in just may take some time
report
I GOT A KEY FOR BFBC2!!!!!! Just keep refreshing till you get through…I got through to the request key page….then refreshed constantly for a couple minutes, and got through to the actual key….now I am free to get on with my life today, I’ll try downloading later, I’m just glad I got the key.
report
UPDATE!
The site is getting heavily hammered at the mo, but we are working hard to try and keep it up! If you manage to get through the download page, then you will be fine, as the mirrors are not the machines experiencing the load at the moment! There are so many people trying to get this lol, its quite insane. Keep trying! We are trying to bring even more machines on as I type this.
This is from a Multiplay/Fileplay person :D
report
Torrent for the client:
http://www.speltorrents.se/download.php/1519/BFBC2_PC_ClosedBeta_RC1_511270_Client.zip.torrent
But the only current tracker is also getting hammered, but at least its a way to start downloading.
EDIT: LOL. One of the linked sites (battlefield.no), when pressing the download button:
“421 50 users (the maximum) are already logged in, sorry” and then I get a 0kb file to download :p
report
thanks, the torrent seems to be working great for me, at the current speed(200kB/s) it’ll be done in a couple hours. Just enough time to get rest of the important stuff of the day done so I’ll be free to play this as long as I want. Assuming it runs well on my pc…
report
You are lucky then, I’m not getting more than 50 kB/s when I actually get a connection to the tracker :(
But it appears we who haven’t gotten to download it yet ain’t missing much – those who are in talk about instant disconnects, unplayable lag and the like.
report
The client seems to be mirrored on games.on.net. I think they’re in Australia, but I’m getting 700KB/s here in the US (using a multi-part downloader/download accelerator, DownThemAll).
report
With regards to Gamespot accounts – it’s worth noting that if you’ve got a GameFAQs account, then that login will work for Gamespot as well, since the two are linked.
Obviously it’s free to sign up to Gamespot though, so no problems if you don’t.
report
Status report: FilePlanet seems to be stable now. At least I’m in a waiting line.
report
Fileplay:
Unfortunately you have not been accepted onto the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Beta programme.
Reason: You must be a member of the Normal User group to access this programme.
What? Is this a pay thing?
report
You need an account with them. A free one.
report
I did register an account but the account confirmation took a while to register.
report
Yay, got into both betas, although I can’t do anything with the C&C 1 at the mo, seems that EA is getting hammered by the number of people wanting in on it.
Ah well, I wanted the BFBC2 beta more.
report
Thanks a lot RPS! Got my BFBC2 beta key just now!
report
EA’s C&C4 website seems to be straining under the traffic. I have a code but cannot redeem it, oh woe is me. Though I have heard from Closed Beta people that it ain’t up to much.
report
I’ll let you little munchkins battle to play. I’ll try tomorrow or something, whatever.
report
Waiting for a C&C 4 key. I’m a bit of a strategy nerd but I have a feeling I’ll only need the beta to satiate my wants for this game. Poor EA.
As for Bad Company 2, the multiplayer videos released look hella fun so it’s a definite purchase. Unfortunately – as I no am Americano – they won’t let me have a looksee through fileplanet :(
report
I got a key for the Bad Company 2 beta, and I tried it out. I wasn’t terribly impressed. As someone said earlier, it feels like a PC version of a sequel to a console shooter. It also has major lag issues and crashes at the server browser. Yes, I know, it’s a beta, and all that good stuff. My main problem with it is that it runs rather poorly on my decently powerful rig (E8400, GTX 260, both overclocked) and the bloom has been dialed up to 11.
report
Yeah, I’ve got a big rig too, but I have to play on low/medium to get rid of the lag. DICE/EA is apparently “aware” of that issue. Server browser is broken, don’t bother using it ^^
And yes, it does feel a bit too “consoley” and “casual/arcade” for my taste. No prone stance is kinda bull if you ask me (I mean, seriously, the sniper rifles have deployed bipods, but you can’t use them?) :/
Gameplay is kind of a mix of TF2 and BF2 (with less silliness ofc :P).
But hopefully it will grow on me, considering I’ve already pre-booked. We’ll see.
report
Hopefully people will give the CNC4 beta a fair shake – it’s pretty different for us at the EALA RTS group, almost to the point of being the diametric opposite of RA3, and I’m actually surprised by how much fun we’ve managed to shake out of the thing over the last few months.
It’s also pretty much the last hurrah for this particular development team, so I hope people take the time to give it a look.
