Games On Television: M.U.D. TV

By Jim Rossignol on February 11th, 2010 at 11:15 am.

The first trailer for TV-management game M.U.D. TV has turned up, and it looks moderately interesting (the iPhone-alike interface is a fun touch). The game puts you in charge of a TV station, from where you can create TV shows and sabotage your rivals. You’ll be able to set up your studios first hand, in classic management-game style, and customise individual staff. Interestingly it’ll even work in multiplayer, and you can sign up for a beta. We’ll be keeping an eye on this one.

Sounds alot like the good old MAD.TV game from the days of yore…

  2. Ian says:

So who else is going to make a comedy-horror-sitcom about the Hivemind?

  3. CMaster says:

It looks rather a lot like The Movies.

Which is fine, as I thought that game was actually a lot of fun.

  4. mandrill says:

I just want to yell ‘I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!’ whilst playing it.

  5. cliffski says:

The trailer seemed to be 99% logos or FMV. Did they think we might not want tos ee how the game plays?
    I hate that.
    bah.

  6. Malawi Frontier Guard says:

The same developer is also working on a sequel to Airline Tycoon. I see a pattern emerging.

  7. BaconIsGood4You says:

What happens when you promise a talk show to one of your employees and then give it right back to the replaced guy?

*switches the sign for the RPS offices around with the sign for the Iranian embassy*

    KABOOM!

  9. Optimaximal says:

And there I was thinking this was an article on that guff C4 ran on Tuesday under the Supernanny name…

Give us a new version of Theme Hospital and Roller Coaster Tycoon (not the looks of the RCT3 though!) and I’m a happy bunny!

    • ulix says:

Also, a restaurant-management sim that is actually fun would be cool.

I love these kinds of sims, sadly there are none arround anymore that are actually worth playing, so I’m looking forward to this.

The beta’s closed already? I get nothing but broken links both from your link above, and within their site. Sigh.

  12. Inigo says:

YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY CONVERTED AN ENEMY DIRECTOR IN THE TORTURE CHAMBER.

    • Brumisator says:

This reminds me more of Liohead’s “Movies” than Evil Genius, actually.

      Wisq says:

That’s a Dungeon Keeper reference, not Evil Genius. :) But yes, the visual style definitely reminds me more of Evil Genius than of DK. Heck, EG even had TV studios as a training item.

  13. Todeskuh says:

    Same here… 404 everywhere.

  14. terry says:

I WON’T sign up for the beta, even if I can’t, so there!

This looks like Mad TV redux which I suppose is a good thing – I never really worked out how that game ticked. The scheduling thing was straightforward but production never seemed to work for me. Similarly for a game that’s supposed to be humourous it was the least humourous presented thing I’ve seen in like, ever.

Does anyone remember MUDS on the Amiga? It was sort of Blood Bowl like and the name was an acronym for MEAN UGLY DIRTY SPORT. For some reason that acronym has stuck in my mind since I played the game in the early 90s and now I see part of it attached to a TV management sim. Is it a case of the same developers being involved? Or a very strange coincidence?

    • Blather Blob says:

I imagine changing a single letter from Mad TV is the more likely explanation.

    • Jaxvor says:

Could be. It just strikes me that Mad Ugly Dirty TV is a little too close to Mean Ugly Dirty Sport to be a coincidence…

  16. Jaxvor says:

    Gah! Double post!

  17. HexagonalBolts says:

The font… the font… ! Euughhh it’s even worse than using papyrus for anything vaguely exotic.

  18. LeFishy says:

The Movies was and probably still is one of my favourite games.

  19. The Walker says:

Am I the only one who immediately thought of re-creating the cast of 30 Rock in this game?

  20. pierec says:

@mandrill: Network is a splendid movie.

  21. geldonyetich says:

The title says MAD TV. The subject matter says The Movies. However the screenshots and gameplay videos say Theme Hospital.

    • terry says:

And the fact that Calypso’s involved suggests Hospital Tycoon.

Yeah, I think I’m going to go ahead and be pre-emptively underwhelmed at this :-)

    • terry says:

Er, I meant Airline Tycoon, evidently. Hospital Tycoon was by Codemasters apparently. But tycoon games with the exception of Transport and Rollercoaster are uniformly awful, so my concern stands.
