A quick NEWS DOANLOAD – YES! DOANLOAD! DOANLOAD – before I head bedwards. As brought to our attention by Mr Diamond’s Unfortunate Sex-tape in the recent comments thread, gameskeeper-turned-poacher (or vice-versa, depending how you look on games journos going industry-wards) Jeff Green twittered noting that Dead Space 2 is totally on the PC. And he should know. We should all be calm. Calm.
EDIT: Actually, Jeff’s retracted it a bit. It’s “under consideration”. Which, as anyone who’s been drunk and sharking possible sexual targets knows, means “I will go for them after three more drinks”. Ah – the PC. The boozy one night stand of the videogames industry.

Looks like he’s retracted that tweet a bit.

Not sure if I’m really interested in what the recent batch of DS2 previews were all about. I don’t see a reason for the game’s absence from PC, though. EA have done good by this platform, recently, and it would make sense to port it…

I know i will no doubt be chased off the site with pitchforks for saying this:
‘Dead Space was a hell of a lot better on the 360′
Even so this is welcome news – as long as they put a little more effort into the port this time round
11/02/2010 at 02:20 Vinraith says:
@Lemon scented apocalypse
No pitchforks here, I think most people will readily admit that games that are designed for consoles are usually better on consoles. Even a non-ideal port is appreciated, though, for those of us that haven’t invested in a next gen console for one reason or another.
11/02/2010 at 11:50 Dot says:
That’s not true, not even slightly. Even just plugging in a gamepad turned the PC version into the 360 version, but with better visuals. With a gamepad, they’re identical, but the PC version looks better due to the hardware and all.
And even outside of it, I’d say it was pretty good even with keyboard/mouse the way I played.

Dead Space… didn’t grab me. The opening sequence was superb but the combat felt squiggly and slow. I wanted to like it, but no dice.

@sigma83: I thought I was the only person around this places that just failed to get what was it that everyone liked so much about DS. To me it was a gigantic “meh”, even though dog knows I wanted to like it like crazy. Much the same happens with Borderlands, come to think of it.
That, and my unconditional forever-and-everly love for Fallout 3 make me feel completely out of place whenever those games are discussed here at RPS.
So thank you, I guess. At least I know I’m not alone about this one =P
11/02/2010 at 03:52 sigma83 says:
I really really enjoyed Borderlands, but it has no longevity. I wanted it to be endlessly replayable with forever scaling enemies and randomized landscapes, but, again, no dice. Sequel perhaps?
I think that RPS is a great place to have a dissenting opinion because the chances of ‘zomg ur such a gay faggot. hatin on halo, hw original’ are essentially nil.
In fact, I shall have a dissenting opinion right now: Kieron is not the most beautiful man on earth! Alec has funny eyebrows! Have my children John Walker! I can’t pronounce Rossignol!
11/02/2010 at 06:05 pistolhamster says:
@Sigma83
Rossignol? I’d fancy it requires you to put on your best french poofter accent and say “Rossih’njål”. What a nasty surprise I get when it turns out the man is from Texas and pronounces it “Roe-see-gnole” with the widest twang known in the universe.
As for DS, I already bought Nintys little one twice. Oh, Deadspace. Sure, I bought it for PC, and I too “meh’ed” it but not worse than I completed the game. What I found most annoying was that it felt like a Doom relapse. Brown-in-brown corridors all over the place, the “horror” was quite quickly worn out and replaced with samey sameyeness just on different levesl of the Ishimura.
11/02/2010 at 08:06 Gnarl says:
I request that Mr. Rossignol’s next podcast is performed in a thick Texan accent, instead of his normal British one.

11/02/2010 at 07:19 Ravenger says:
well if EA hadn’t installed limited activation DRM on the original I’d have bought it at launch. As it was I waited until it was bargain bin price on Steam, without any limited installs, so EA got much less money out of me than they would have. Since then they have done well with releasing games without that infernal system, so hopefully lesson learned.
I loved the game, though the PC version did have some major flaws: unbindable arrow keys, dodgy mouse control and loading times unless you disabled vsync, and the gamma was too high – you could never get it dark enough,.
I’m left handed so I had to resort to a hack to let me use the arrow keys for movement. Very poor design there in an otherwise excellent game.
If there’s a PC sequel I’ll be interested, but only after reading reviews to see if it’s a good port.
11/02/2010 at 10:02 pistolhamster says:
There are actual pc gamers left alive in this world that use arrow keys? I thought they went the way of the dinosaurs. WASD’ing since ’96.

Should we further infer that Dead Space 2 on the PC will be desperate and regrettable? This is a shame; the few hours I spent with Dead Space 1 were worthy.

11/02/2010 at 11:57 Diogo Ribeiro says:
Dead Space was surprising. In both good and bad ways.
I’d like to think the positives outweigh the good, in some way, like coming out of a medieval colonoscopy alive. At some point I heard rumors it could/would/should have been a System Shock sequel or “spiritual successor”, if in some way one could ascribe “spirit” to a game that is essentially that American History X curb stomp over and over again. Problem is, everyone has at least one good idea that could feature in a horror game. Dead Space featured a handful of neat ones, divided by segments of plodding through environments with a character whose posture is nothing short of Donkey Kong. Maybe when Issac was a kid he loved that gorilla so much he made it a point to emulate his idol in all sorts of ways. At least the near-knuckle dragging and grunts are there, as is stomping over everything.
It does try to follow in some “stylistic” elements of Shock, from audio logs to the sounds of the necromorphs on the ship. It could just be that this was as far as they could go to establish a link, although you could probably point to the small handful of moments – the blind woman unknowingly talking to a stiff, the guy hitting his head repeatedly on the wall, the guy desperate enough to shoot off his own limbs so as not to change into a monster – and the warning messages on walls and such. It would be paper thin, of course; most games I’ve played nowadays that try to do this gravitate around this notion of aggregating “cool” without realizing the core. Like at several points, you find dead people right next to warning messages. These people apparently knew exactly how to kill necromorphs but all they could do in their last moments of life was dedicate themselves to the fine art of graffiti or wall carving. Nothing says terror like street art. Then again the same could be said of Bioshock, in which case you’d have to replace “street art” with “schizophrenia” or “a social inability to actually, y’know, TALK TO SOMEONE ELSE ABOUT THINGS” or “posting on your blog and no one cares”.
What I appreciated the most were incidental details, some of which were probably beyond the design team’s intent. Once you hit the end portion of the game and realize Issac was hallucinating his dead wife, I started a sort of New Game+ where I could keep augmented weapons, and gain some extra credits and a new armor (which remained as aesthetically born dead as previous ones obtained during the game). On replaying the initial segment I realized I could swivel the camera to see Issac’s face. Such a weird thing, to make the ending focus so much on him removing his helmet when you had a good glimpse of it in the beginning. A spoiler that wasn’t, like being flashed by a guy in the subway and all you can muster is “dad, get a grip”. When all hell breaks lose you see Issac’s expression – it’s one of bewilderment, consternation, but also of acceptance. Could he be hallucinating his dead wife already before he went down to shoot and curb stomp all those hentai rejects? Maybe. A nice, even if tenuous touch.
While no Dark Corners of the Earth, there were moments where you’re taken off guard. Like the giant tentacles that suddenly come out of the walls and grab you – something terribly repeated right down to the last Chtulhuoid boss – and you’re presented with a quick time event that really isn’t: you can still switch between, and fire weapons to hit it while being dragged into a hairy vagina of sorts. Failing it results in a much more “cute” death. Unlike the rest of the game, where death is a large blood explosion or watch your head chopped off and seeing it roll on the floor for a good eight seconds. One of these has Issac’s head being replaced with that of a necromorph and I found myself saying “Yes! Role reversal! Let me do the tentacle and sucking on whatever humans remain!” but you’re treated to another eight seconds of spasm dancing and a Game Over.
I *am* curious about the sequel – the same way you watch a car crash and, confronted with a strange erection, go off in search of a train wreck but hey, some people need to get their kicks – but it’s absence from the PC doesn’t really affect me.
11/02/2010 at 15:42 Feanor says:
It was RE 4-lite but still a lot of fun. The new action focus for the sequel doesn’t excite me very much.
