I think I have actually played (for most, through) every single game mentioned.

I'm actually kind of depressed due to it, mostly because it means a) there's nothing left to discover and b) I am completely right about gaming 10-20 years ago being pretty much infinitely better in terms of depth and quality and innovation compared to the last 5+.

Sacrifice you should definitely check out if you don't know it yet, it will hold up well.
Wish there were more stuff like Dungeon Keeper, Evil Genius, etc.
It's good to be bad.

You guys should/could also use this as an incentive to write about the lack of evil-side gaming opportunities.

You're right, Gunship 2000 would be the true retro pick :) But hey, EECH was released in mid-90's and it still has a community!

Why simulations are never mentioned in these retro flashback pieces? After all the PC was and still is _the_ sim platform. Especially helicopter sims. In my opinion, Enemy Engaged: Comanche Hokum (+ community mods and freetrack, see http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/forums/13/1/EECH_EEAH.html) has not been beaten yet by anything. Some might say that Longbow 2 is better and more realistic but I think EECH is more fun and feels better to fly.

I think it's the best thing she's ever done but I could be biased seeing as it's for Hexen. I'm quite fond of the sadly unfinished Centromere myself. Another good one is Caldera.

I'd like to give a shout out to Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos from 2001, one of my most favourite games along with the aforementioned Thief: The Dark Project, Betrayal at Krondor and Deus Ex. It's an open world space shooter (mission- and story-based, though, not as open as the X series), and one of the most immersive games I've ever played.

I know. But I've never finished the bastard thing. I get to the multi-storey cruise liner Terror Site missions and then everyone dies and I give up. Then a few months later, I try again. :(

Anyway, I got bored and started Silent Storm again instead. Never got on with it before, but I'm loving it at the moment.

When all else fails, use a Virtual Machine. Check VMWare, Virtual PC or VirtualBox. Of course, you need the old operating system installation disk(s).
