Build It, They Will Come: TF2 Engie Tease

By Alec Meer on May 6th, 2010 at 11:30 pm.

It is Team Fortress news so we must post it because it is Team Fortress news, even in the face of our great despair about what the morrow may bring for the UK. Valve’s monopoly on patch-centric gossip remains extraordinary, the presentation alone ensuring gents like us are duty-bound to cover it. This time, it’s a teaser for the long-awaited Engineer update…

(Bigger version here).

Which tells us precisely nothing. OR DOES IT?

Our arch-nemeses PC Gamer think otherwise. They’ve been through the video to a near-psychotic degree, identifying what they reckon are clues. Robot arms! Flamethrowers! Robots! Mysterious domes! Red lights!

Could just be incidental clutter, but big bastard teasers like Valve don’t tend to put stuff like this out without hiding an Easter Egg or two. So, what do you think we’re in for?

Less damage and slower repair, but sets dudes on fire and will repair faster if concentrated longer.

Could there perhaps be a clue in the final caption? ‘It’s your turn now?’
Maybe there’ll be player input in this update, like us voting for player craftin ideas, or fighting over which unlock we prefer (like with the demo/soldier wars).
    Anyway.. interest piqued….

Dude, when you become good at TF2 and you’re having one of those streaks where no one can beat you… there’s nothing quite like it in the whole gaming world- that mix of triumph and comedy causes a very peculiar elating sensation… quite addictive, FYI.

And don’t be too worried about being late to the party. I bought my copy a good year or two after release and had no problems fitting in. Most classes are easy to pick up and play and the community is generally pretty decent.

Honestly, Team Fortress 2 is the best time I’ve had on multiplayer. Like 1nightstand said, the mixture of comedy with some of the most well balanced, satisfying gameplay I’ve experienced is uniquely rewarding, and the community is as strong as ever.
I got tired of Counter Strike because of all the hyper-accurate twitch players who became unstoppable because they had the best mouses or had played way, way too long. TF2’s weapons are far less (impossibly, like TF2) accurate, and the classes and gameplay balance each other superbly. Long(ish) story short: New melee weapon, The Hammer.

    report

  22. broklynite says:

I think that the bigger question, which is not being asked, is if one of the upgrades allows the sentry guns to talk. Like, when someone pops in and out of it’s periphery, it could say something like, oh I don’t know…. how about “Are you still there?” and when they come back in view “I see you” and scream when attacked, and maybe even forgive you when you blow them up.

    What? It could happen.

    report

  23. gildron says:

God, I adore the TF2 team. At this point they are like an indie…. But with, you know, lots of money. Having something like ten total employees working on the game. Pretty epic. Their writer/writers is/are fantastic, always.

Just, overall, this game has got to be the best value for my money ever. I’ve been playing since December of ’07 and I have yet to stop for more then a month or so, just because all of the new free toys keep bringing me back. I really wish other developers would look at this, see the ridiculous sales spikes that occur every time they release an update, then try to do the same thing.

    I like free updates.

    report

    • Ninja431 says:

Yes, I love TF2 too, but have only had it 2-3 weeks. I was instantly in love with the game and would probably be a dedicated Engineer if a good update is released. And Twigg, spider mines? Hardly mines if they can RUN and TAKE THE FLAG, they would be more like scout bots or something

If the bots actually tried to take the flag instead of just being highly mobile d-bags, that would make them better than scouts.

  27. Batolemaeus says:

I love playing Engi, but nearly all updates were a stealth nerf. Pyros suddenly push you away from your point, burn you from afar, kritzkrieg soldiers one shoot you, direct hit kills you and your sentry, scouts go invulnerable, spies snipe you or slowly sneak up and decloak when you can’t see them.

Overall i’m not very satisfied with the amount of projectile spam. It wasn’t like that in vanilla. :(

    • Hobbes says:

I think they can write what they like.

You seem to be arguing that no negative or positive opinion on any election is legitimate, because it’s a separate moral judgement from the correctness of democracy. If so, the only thing anyone could then say would be “in this election, the electorate voted, hooray” which is a bit of a tautology.

Of course in a democracy people have individual & party preferences, and feel strongly for them, whether or not the electorate are morons, and whether or not democracy itself is effective*. Despite your implication that righties don’t “crow” about democracy, I think acknowledging democratic choice is perfectly compatible with caring about the government we all live under, and that’s something everyone except the BNP accepts.

Personally I like the fact that this site belongs to four specific individuals who have their own personal opinions about things, not some faceless corporation. People who are just guests here are allowed to make political comments so why shouldn’t the people who actually *own* this site make political comments?

  50. Mr_Day says:

    Personal wishlist for engineer:

Placing dispenser next to turret will auto fix turret, but slower than using the wrench, and at the cost of the dispenser’s metal stock.

Wrenchonette – Wrench bayonette added to shottie, alternate attack repairs and smacks in spies*.

New level three turret – instead of rockets, adds a spy detecting pulse to the level three turret, pulses once every 15 seconds but in a very small radius around the turret.

Teleporters upgraded with Portal technology – see through to where you want to go! Marvel as you can only see a bricks because the engineer ONCE AGAIN made the exit facing a fucking wall.

What I’m getting as it that it might be some sort of device to catch rockets (and possibly grenades?), grabbing them and sending them back. If anything, it might be a device of it’s own, or simply an attachment to one of you’re already built structures.

I dunno. I quit playing TF2. Whilst I’m not being incoherently ranty about it, a lot of the reason was that I was sick of all the change and the simplicity of the original game being slowly lost.

      So.

      report

    • Rinox says:

Mistabashi wasn’t talking about people who just don’t like the change – he’s talking about the people (kids? OCD maniacs?) who go ballistic everytime Valve comes up with a new item that is not accessible to them for some reason (like the recent service medal or the soldier’s limited edition medal). They are a very loud group and they go very predictably ballistic over every such move by Valve, and you’ll find that they’re very often part of the same groups who complain about every other thing in the game (even every free update). They’re just very bitter human beings.

The best moment was with the Halo hat. Servers full of people with “not healing halos” in their names…hilarious.

“Build It, They Will come” maybe some engineering boost like superdispenser that can be only placed on CP to encourage teamates to care more about the CPs? Or… Oh no! It sounds like the update will replace the teleporter and whole team will have to walk by foot! :)

The Mothership thingie would be sweet. And maybe it’s not that far from true, IMO the Engie Update will bring something that would make Engie class more effective on offensive maps somehow. As someone mentioned already too many Engies may be frustrating for Blues sometimes when the players defend instead of attacking, this might bring some ballance… :)

The welder you see is designed with a pretty distinctive sillouete(sorry I can’t spell) and has a light which would make it easy to identify on the battlefield, all other tf2 weapons have been designed with this in mind sooo…. But maybe I’m crazy.

it would be cool if the engie could set a camera up (on the wall) and show it in the top of the screen, then when the enemys come, it would turn red and he could say it to the rest of the team.

eks. (red alert! the blu team is under the bridge, soon they will be at the inteligence we need some heavys down!)

engies should be able to build sentries which take the traits of the classes. a heavy sentry would have slow turning and low range but lots of ammo and hp.

    This is what I noticed:
-In the very first second you see the dispencer like thing in the backround. Looks similar to a new item valve talked about on the tf2 website that they planned not to use that would repair buildings
-the robotic arm on the blueprint(obviously)
    -A flamethrower tank
-There is a cord in the very beginning the could be from the guitar and is plugged into something between two boxes above it.
-THE HAMMER. as people have been saying, new melee weapon?
-I can’t quite read the poster in the backround, if anyone can, what does it say?

I forgot, at the very end in the bottom right corner sitting in the back of the room, there is a metal helmet like thing with a glowing red dot in the center… any ideas?

I noticed something similar to a radar dish in the first couple seconds of the video. A spy detector perhaps?

    report

    • Grenades with scopes says:

That radar dash is on top of the repair node, a failed building idea that valve tested but they decided not to use, it is similar to a dispencer in shape. There is a post about it on the tf2 website.

  103. Grenades with scopes says:

I noticed a lot of things and have many theories, I’ll try not to go into details about the obvious, so here they be:
-hammer or welder. new melee wep?

-In the first seconds you can see the repair node in the backround, which valve said on the tf2 blog they would not put in the game.

-also in the first second is the guitar from meet the engineer, and above it between two boxes in the hotrod hat.

-the poster in the background is the winner from the propaganda contest. It says something along the lines “give em the boot, right in the fruit” I can’t quite remember.

-On the blueprint is the robotic arm, as everbody know, BUT WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW is that to left of the arm on the blueprint is a robotic leg. You can see most of it if you pause the video at exactly the right time. It is also visible in a recreation of the blueprint that someone. check out tf2 wiki to see it.

-In front of the engie is a flamethrower. I don’t think this is going to be part of a firespitting building or robot (though that would be good for spy detection) but it is a hint that meet the pyro is coming!

-After the camer stops panning, you can see two helmet like objects in the bottom right corner, each with one glowing red dot in the center. One looks like a rectangle, but on closer inspection it actually isn’t, it is just in front of a box or something.

-at around 8 secs there is the metal dome object thing right infrom of the camera. another robot helmet?

-AND THE THE FOR THE GRAND FANALY(I spelled fanaly wrong, didn’t I) is what I think is the one observation that has gone overlooked: right before the camera stop panning, you catch a glimps of a red toolbox, with the number 24 written on it in yellow. last time I checked, the engie’s toolbox did not have that written on it in-game. I think that it could be a clue to the release date. May 24th? in 24 days after the video? though it doesn’t seem like valve to set an exact date for something, but who knows

Overall: robots, the number 24, and hammer + welder. can’t wait, go Valve!
