DoubleSix and Paramount Digital have announced a Top Gun game. DoubleSix say: “We’ve all been hard at work on this for a good while and at its core the game is an arcade flight shooter in the same vein as Ace Combat and HAWX (though much faster and more visceral). Naturally, we’ll be talking about the game in the oncoming weeks and maybe even showing our suitably l33t skillz to boot.” Apparently the original screenwriter, Jack Epps Jr, has been involved to expand the universe, but I’ve got the feeling he’s going to struggle to top the particular ambiance of his original work…

Better call Kenny Loggins because we’re in the danger zone.

The title is the best euphemism.

Archer is one of the best shows ever.
How will they make this game faster than Ace Combat or HAWX? Neither of those are exactly glacial long-term strategy games.

I was just thinking the other day about how awesome a Top Gun game could be and someone should really get round to making it. Sadly the reality will never live up to my hopes and dreams, unless there is an 80′s-silhouette-sex game included near the end of Act 2.

I never could land on the damn carrier in the NES game.

I thought the 1996 Top Gun: Fire at Will on the PC was aces mcwin, how could they possibly hope to top that.

Off topic, but whilst looking this up I found that the wikipedia page on high-fives is ridiculous.

Archer is indeed brilliance.
21/05/2010 at 17:47 Crush says:
A game based on Archer would be freaking incredible, if only someone would do it.
It is one of the funniest things on TV go find it if your reading this and haven’t seen it.

It would make an ideal old skool point and click TBH.
As long it has a button to just yell DDDAAANNNNNGGEEERRR ZZZOONNE at random intervals.

If it’s an arcade flight shooter each and every level will be what I call a target-rich environment.
You don’t have time to think up there. If you think, you’re playing a real combat flight simulator.

Rather have Afterburner Climax :T

Hope it turns out good. Would be nice to play something other than HAWX, since I cant get Strike Commander to ever work in anything higher than Win95.
21/05/2010 at 21:34 Supertonic says:
Have you tried running it in Wine on Linux?
21/05/2010 at 22:36 Hyperion says:
@Super:
Never thought to use Wine for it back when I was running debian. Though that was an old PC. I know some people got it to run somewhat ok on DOSBox, though I dont know what settings they run.
22/05/2010 at 10:24 Supertonic says:
Seriously, Wine’s awesome for running stuff that doesn’t work in Windows any more (strangely ironic)

22/05/2010 at 00:53 Grape Flavor says:
Is there any other kind of “modern flight shooter” than “arcade”? I imagine a more accurate simulation of 2010-era air warfare wouldn’t be a whole lot of fun, especially in multiplayer.
Player 1 plays an American pilot, gets an F-22. Player 2 plays as someone else and gets a plane designed in the 1980s. Player 1 can see Player 2 but Player 2 can’t see Player 1. Player 1 presses button. Player 2 explodes. End of game.
I know that’s a gross oversimplification, but let’s face it, air warfare had a lot more romance to it back in the Cold War days. Brutal technological overmatch rarely makes for good gameplay.

It’s like you didn’t even listen to a word Viper said.

Is this coming to PC? Their website makes it sound like a PS3 exclusive.
22/05/2010 at 01:38 Corrupt_Tiki says:
Why Don’t they stop making these cruddy ‘arcade’ flight combat sims, and make some more Flight combat simulators. USAF was awesome.
22/05/2010 at 01:51 Spacewalk says:
I doubt that there will be any volleyball and shower scenes so this won’t be a true Top Gun game but I’ll remain optimistic.

A couple months ago the word was that DoubleSix’s excellent Burn Zombie Burn is coming to PC’s via Steam. I’d buy it again if the co-op multiplayer is online. Fingers crossed.
