Two Hours Of Gaming The Same As Cocaine?

By John Walker on May 27th, 2010.

Image by Willtron, published under Creative Commons.

An absolutely remarkable claim has been made by a UK therapist, Steve Pope, that playing videogames for two hours is the equivalent of doing a line of coke. I attempted to speak to him over the last 24 hours with little success, the results below. Edit: Mr. Pope has since texted me a statement, which I will add below.

It’s from an article in the Lancaster Evening Post that really hits every clanging bell. Games are like drugs, games are addictive, games lead to bad behaviour, and of course, games lead to violence. Claims that are made, as is so often the case, without links to any form of evidence. But is this an example of a gaming website getting angry when someone says something bad about games? Nope, the reaction does not come from that place. It comes from one of having done a lot of research into the subject, and a desire for evidence-based science and reporting to be conducted in the realm of gaming. Because, as we’ve said a number of times, if games are bad for us then we would want to know. So let’s look at how this is written, and ask why.

Two Worlds 2 Gets A Proper Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on May 27th, 2010.

A while back we did a bit of embarrassed laughing at this, but it turns out the actual debut trailer for Two Worlds 2, which has just turned up, is far snazzier, and makes the game look quite a lot posher too. I don’t expect it will genuinely dissolve the fleshy wrapping of scepticism produced by people who played the original game, but I know that at least some of those people didn’t react badly to it, and will probably be going back to visit ludicrously helmeted fantasy chappies in the sequel.

Are Games Pixel Art? Yes.

By Jim Rossignol on May 27th, 2010.

Such is the poor quality of my brain function that I assumed this brief documentary about pixel art (below) had found its way into my browser /because/ I’d seen it on RPS. Not so. Fortunately the mini-movie itself was made by people with far shinier brains that myself, and features a bunch of people talking sagely about videogames and pixel art. It really is worth ten minutes of the time you have left.

Once More Unto The Balloons!

By Jim Rossignol on May 27th, 2010.

Splendid scholar and gentleman Andrew Mao sends word that he has put up an East Coast US server for Air Buccaneers – a feat of altruism which should fix our balloon-pirating woes. Looks like there’s a Warband event on tonight, but how about we all pile on to this on Saturday for aeronautical fun times?

Mr Mao also says: “ut2004://140.247.62.101:8777 – has redirect so even those who are too lazy to download the game can just put in the IP and get the files downloaded.”

Optimus Primed: Rig’n'Roll

By Alec Meer on May 26th, 2010.

Oh yes. I have review code for Rig’n'Roll, “the ultimate truck driving experience.” This name and that statement alone were enough to ensure I was going to try this anyway, but the promise on the back of the box that it has an “exciting story with an unexpected finale” has pushed my intruigometer to maximum. Unexpected how? Turns out the driver’s in a coma, imagining driving a truck? Or it’s not a truck at all, but a sentient crustacean in truck form? Or it turns out the truck was in purgatory, waiting to be reunited with the people it loves the most? Nah, no-one’d write something that silly. It’ll be a short while before I can fire this rare beauty up, but in the meantime let’s look at some videos. RAWK videos.

MMLARPing: Game Nation

By Jim Rossignol on May 26th, 2010.

Will we have to queue for a ride on the Space Mountain Instance?
Not exactly PC gaming, but I wanted to type “MMLARPing”. Game Nation is, apparently, something like LARPing on a massive, commercial scale.

Game Nation™ is the world’s first Experiential Video Game Theme Park and Resort. Visitors will become players as their dreams and fantasies come to life in adventures yet to be told. You will become anything you like and live out the character you create. But this is no game. It’s real!

There’s so much fodder here, I almost dare not think about it. If this goes ahead, someone is going to write some serious New Games Journalism. Probably Quinns. It’ll be how he meets his end. Slain by a giant emo. Keep an eye on this lunacy here.

Caster Snake Oil: Caster Pay-What-You-Want

By Kieron Gillen on May 26th, 2010.

That's some quite good jumping there.

A less controversial pay-what-you-want here, with the previously-reported Caster doing it for a week. Hurrah for that, though considering the game is five dollars normally for both episodes it’s not an enormous bargain. Maybe people will pay more, considering a fiver overpriced. What’s it like? Well, famously, the jumping is quite good. Also, for the fans, there’s Casper T-shirts available for order. AND HERE IS SOME FOOTAGE…

Mod News: Re-Vamped

By Lewis Denby on May 26th, 2010.

You know what? I’m excited this week. That’s because some completely foolish but eternally wonderful folks are embarking on something pretty awesome: taking what is officially the third best PC game of all time (don’t argue) and making its engine go all fancy and current-gen. Whatever am I talking about? Read on, my pretties.

Evolved? Alien Breed: Impact

By Jim Rossignol on May 26th, 2010.

I'd have called it Extra-Terrestrial Space Biff
Alien Breed: Impact is the exciting, glossy name for the “heavily updated” version of Alien Breed XBLA remake Alien Breed Evolution that will finally make its way to the PC this summer. Team 17 have these words to say:

“Alien Breed: Impact is now tougher and requires more individual exploration than its predecessor. It features expanded customisability, with upgrades available for weapons that can be purchased using cash looted from corpses and lockers. If that isn’t enough to whet your appetite, there are enhancements to the co-operative gameplay experience for you and a shooting buddy, not to mention the “Prologue” campaign, which takes players through an updated and expanded introduction to the world of Alien Breed.”

Going to reserve judgement on this until we get our hands on it, but the original was a little disappointing – mainly because the co-op was rubbish. Hopefully “enhancements” will deal with that issue in a meaningful way.

Speedticular Bicyles: SBK-X Demo

By Kieron Gillen on May 26th, 2010.

Look once, look twice, think bike, think I WILL NEVER BUY A BIKE THEY ARE CRAZED MACHINES! CRAZED!

RPS know almost as much about bike-racing as foot-to-ball. As such, we’re all sure to be absorbed in SBK-X when it hits. Until then, here’s a demo, featuring the Portimao track, where you have to dodge between portable miniature Communist Chinese Leaders without dying or something. Four weather modes are included, plus two drivers: Max Biaggi and Cal Curthlow, who are the quick but fast characters and the speedy but nippy characters respectively. You can download the 700Mb demo from here or watch some footage below…

Slowing Down For An Internet Car Crash

By Kieron Gillen on May 26th, 2010.

How could a pretty blue site causes such grinding of teeth? Well, easily, it seems. GiveWhatYouWant.Com seems to be following the million-plus success of the Humble Bundle offering indie games Aztaka, Bob Came in Pieces, Kingdom Elemental Tactics, Gravitron 2, Bridge Construction Set and PutUp in a pay what you want package, with the money being split between the developers and charity. Except… well, it’s a mess. Start with the 150+ thread over at Indie Games, with initial people not getting their games exploding into stories of a complete lack of contracts, the runner of the site launching it on his wedding day, questions about wher the money is actually going and two developers (Bob Came in Pieces and Gravitron 2) withdrawing their support from the bundle (though nicely say they’ll send a copy of their games to anyone who paid for the pack and didn’t get the game after paying). More stuff over on the GoG forum too. After the enormous success of the Humble Bundle, this is a sad spectacle.

EDIT: PC Gamer have an interview with the gentleman behind the deal.
