Valve Announces Half-Life 2 For Mac

By John Walker on May 26th, 2010.

Some Mac users, in a queue at a Mac Store, yesterday.

Valve has, without comment, released the video you’ll find below to announce Half-Life 2 for the Mac. To do so there’s brand new pre-rendered footage of Alyx, along with other Half-Life 2 familiars, which is clearly something that’s going to be worth a watch. It’s brief, it’s to promote a million year old game, but hey – it’s more HL2. Also, have they hidden any clues in there about anything else? It seems the sort of thing they’d do, and you seem the sort of person who’d be able to spot it.

I’m The King Of Spain: Peninsular Campaign

By Kieron Gillen on May 25th, 2010.

Heheheheheheheh. He said 'Penis'.

So, the next Campaign for Napoleon: Total War will be in Sunny Spain. Top level features? New 32-region campaign map, a playable Spain and new agents (Priests, Guerrilla and the fancy-underwear-devotees of the Agent Provacteurs). You’ll find the full press-release below, which leaves me just time to say “Napoleon? Short fella, yes?” to wind up the historical purists before I press “Post”. My work here is done.

Hard To Swallow: Human Centipede

By Kieron Gillen on May 25th, 2010.

If RPS is ever surgically attached, ass to mouth, John should be at the front, because we're all used to swallowing with his shit.

When Robin Clarke linked this, Ste Curran notes that – finally – we have proof that videogames are art. It’s Human Centipede: The Game. Based on last year’s controversial film it’s basically Centipede… but with ass-to-mouth surgical attachment. I’m not sure what else I can say. It’s Centipede… but with with ass-to-mouth surgical attachment. It really is.

Starcraft 2: One Player Hands-On (+ InterChat)

By Kieron Gillen on May 25th, 2010.

Turning up to a hands-on event for a much-anticipated game when you’ve already been playing the game for a good few months is a strange one. Of course, I haven’t been playing it. What I’ve been playing is the Multiplayer Beta – and WORD WAR THREE will actually return one day – and that’s not Starcraft 2 at all. To see what else Starcraft 2 actually is – the entirity thereof – is the reason why I’ve made my way across London.

RPS Subscribers Are Best!

By John Walker on May 25th, 2010.

Dear Your Sinclair, thank you.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun is rather good. Isn’t it? We rather love writing it, and making sure it stands out in an internet of gaming news and snooze. We do it for love, and for money. Mostly the former. However, if you’re interested in increasing the latter, there’s always the option of subscribing. We don’t make a big fuss about it, because we’re both modest and financially naive, but clicking here will let you set up a Paypal account that lets you give us $2 per month. But why on Earth would you want to do that, when you already gave 10p to that tramp? Well, because subscribers are our favourites. And we treat our favourites best, with a fortnightly newsletter, secret competitions, and first access to beta codes and special offers. In fact, we’ve got a subscriber-only beta key giveaway coming up later this week.

Aion? Anyone? Come On…

By Jim Rossignol on May 25th, 2010.

There must be some Aion players out there in the seething RPS masses. Hands up – who is still playing? You still getting a kick out of it? Does this new “Assault on Balaurea” expansion tickle your fancy? Seems pretty standard fare for MMO expansions: higher level cap, new zones, new instances, and some tweaks to things like pet ownership, but it could be a big deal. The trailer, which I’ve posted below, is predictably gorgeous.

Tick-Tick-Tick Boom!: Mamono Sweeper

By Kieron Gillen on May 24th, 2010.

JPG compression really does not serve this.

Catching up with recent indie-games, and hit up on Mamono Sweeper which Indie Games discovered and forwarded to us by the bad-damage-dice-for-a-monster-to-have d32. It’s a simple one: minesweeper meets an RPG. You level up by killing monsters. The numbers are the total number of monster levels adjacent to the square. Pick fights with monsters of your level or below not to lose HP and gain XP, so leveling up and allowing you to take on bigger monsters. Play here. There’s also a harder version available here. Pure game design. Love it.

Deathspank: Deathspank

By Jim Rossignol on May 24th, 2010.

Deathspank? Deathspank
Deathspank. It’s Ron Gilbert’s many-years-in-the-kitchen-of-development humorous Diablo-alike, and it has quite the art style. I’ll admit I’d forgotten about it entirely until a video (below) turned up today, and the reason I’d forgotten is that it’s not clear if there will be a PC version. Will there be a PC version? I don’t know. I’ll try and find out, right now. In the meantime, assuming there is a PC version, you can go watch the video. Otherwise, please use mind-erasers to delete this experience from your memory. Thanks.

Scratching That Witch: New Witcher 2 Details

By Kieron Gillen on May 24th, 2010.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T WANT TO SEX ME?

VG247 are reporting new details and grabs emerging from Namco’s Pre-E3 press event in Spain. Well, “details” is a bit much – it’s all very much generalities. That said, things like “no fed ex missions” is going to be an interesting one to watch, if only to see if they actually do it (In the same way MMO devs claim “No Kill 10 Boar quests” before inevitably having Kill 10 Boar quests.) A quote on sex and eroticism screams out, promising it’ll be dealt with in “a much more realistic, involving and mature way, thanks to which sexual relationships are presented more credibly than in TW1.” You know, a meaner commentator than I would take that as a Mea Culpa. Still: I’m increasingly excited about this. And it’s still due for early 2011, apparently. Yays.

Show Off: 3DMark 11

By Alec Meer on May 24th, 2010.

Coraltastic

I don’t have a DirectX 11 graphics card yet, and haven’t hitherto been moved to desire one. This trailer for the latest iteration of venerable (and oft-controversial*) PC benchmarking app 3DMark rather makes me want one, however.

Of course, the visual splendour to be found in an application dedicated to pushing high-end PCs to the absolute limit has about as much in common with the graphical capabilities of contemporary videogames as do olympic athletes, lumberjacks or men who can successful change a tyre to me. So it’s utterly futile to dream of playing in worlds that look quite as lovely as this. We’re a long way off PCs being able to generate scenes of this quality at 60 or even 30 frames per second. What 3DMark11 will be good for, upon its release in the third quarter of this year (why can’t people just use months?), is to wave your big digital willy around and see if anyone’s impressed. For the rest of us, admiring the oceanic footage below may well be enough.
