I think we're all comfortable with the idea of fascist sci-fi societies with their own take on cruel use of the population (tell me there's a Soylent Green card? :) otherwise does the Carousel have a CO2 impact for burning the bodies? or increase landfill?)...

These ideas aren't completely horrifying because they all still seem pretty sci-fi and any society that would endorse it is a long way from our current society (this may be an incorrect assumption, after all most sci-fi novels are commentary on the present...)

BP opening up a massive can of worms with Methane Clathrates is disconcertingly close to likely (at least in my perception) - this may be wrong and that option may be as crazily out there as the Carousel. To the lay-person though it's just "Oil company finds new source of power with horrific environmental cost". Which you know, is just oil really ;)

Lol, I got "Methane Clathrates" into a gaming article and here was me thinking that my discussion of eliminating everyone over the age of 50 with the Carousel card was going to get the attention :)

Jim/Kieron - the Karaoke was great fun but I lost my voice on Saturday :D

Thanks to David for organising it and for the all the attendees for being totally awesome - I look forward to more of the same :)

So it seems like the term "Indie" is still mainly being used in the commercial sense - that these game makers are commercially separate from the big mainstream companies. They don't seem "indie" in a broader, cultural, sense because they are all still just dealing with the same patterns of play, the same basic themes, and the same kind of stories as the bigger companies. Sadly they can't be favorably compared to the various forms of independent cinema or independent literature.
Granted, there has always been a group of game makers who think of what they do as art but beyond a few uses of games as political comment they've been mainly concerned with the "form" of games and so tend to make games-about-games for the game/art audience. It would be great to play a game that is independent in a more challenging way. Perhaps we are still a long way from that?

It plays like Peter Molyneux claimed Syndicate would play before its release. Some things don't change.

The theme, Delay explained, is Mission Impossible. The TV series, not the Tom Cruise movies.

Hunh. I guess it wasn't the most original idea. Well, it'll be interesting to see how that compares to my rough early notes on such a concept.

I was there :)
Had a great day despite not being the most socially forthcoming person. Having said that, everyone I did speak to was brilliantly friendly and talking indie games to boot. Fantastic atmosphere being surrounded by like-minded people and hearing loads of great talks. Perhaps a little rushed at times though.
Did a wee write-up myself but nowhere near as good as Jims.
