Fallout: New Vegas Dated + E3 Trailer

By Kieron Gillen on June 14th, 2010.

I still haven't got more than an hour into Fallout 3. Man! I'm as bad as Jim.

When is Fallout: New Vegas coming out? I didn’t know. Then I read a news story on VG247. And then I did. It’s October 22nd. This year. Not next year. Not last year. This year. October 22nd is the date for the release of Fallout: New Vegas.

The E3 trailer for it is also totally out. It features things going bang.

GW2: Get Anything If You Axe Them Nicely

By Kieron Gillen on June 14th, 2010.

I quite like the composition here. I don't know why. I don't know why I'm writing about composition. I don't know anything.

Catching up with some interesting stuff we missed last week before E3 goes completely gonzoid, Adam noted that Arenanet have released more info on Guild Wars 2. In a continuation of what they’ve been doing before, it explores one system and dissects one character class. The system is the Traits, which are advantage-style bonuses you can add to your character’s skills to supplement your build. Read here. Secondly, they reveal the genre-staple of the warrior. Ah, hitting. Will we ever be bored of the hitting? Lots of details on their core mechanics and various uses of weapon types – from hammers to rifles – and a whole load of new videos showing off some attacks. WHICH FOLLOW!

In The Shadow Of Shadow Of The Colossus

By Kieron Gillen on June 14th, 2010.

This spoils the surprise, somewhat, but I'm not sure you'd have clicked it otherwise.

TheBlackBandit, quite impressed, pointed us in the direction of this free platformer. Heir is clearly inspired by – but, I stress, not anywhere in the league of – the Team Ico’s critical colossus, but in 2D and without having to ride the annoyingly wonky horse through that fucking forest or having to deal with Edge’s equivalents of John Walker boo-hooing over it whenever it’s mentioned. The move to 2D actually immediately moves it closer to Prince of Persia, which – for me – sits at the head of this particular family tree.. Its three levels are a stylish example of the genre. It’ll be a fine way to start the week.

Trine 2 Confirmed For PC

By Jim Rossignol on June 14th, 2010.

This is a pleasant way to start the week, via Blue: having a sequel for a charming and playable game confirmed for our humming box of tricks. In a reveal thread on the Frozenbyte forums Joel Kinnunen responds “Yes. And before anyone asks, it will come to PC in addition to any other platforms. That’s all we can say right now.” And I suppose what makes me most pleased is that the existence of sequel means that enough of you lot bought the original for it to have been a success. Good news, I think.

The Sunday Papers

By Kieron Gillen on June 13th, 2010.

Sundays are for catching up the work you missed on Friday due to having to go along with most of RPS to a Wedding and compiling a list of the (especially this time, I think) fine (mostly) games related writing that crossed your desk this week and trying to not include a link to something with chiming guitars and a sort of forlorn faux-doomed 80s attitude. Go!

  • Wired US publishes an excerpt from Tristan Donovan’s new book Replay: The History of Videogames. It’s dealing with the birth of the British game industry, with special focus on its surreal qualities. It’s good enough to make me go and add it to my Amazon ordering list immediately. 500 page history of games with its focus on the world stage, including ever-ignored Europe? Not the sort of thing I can resist. Amazon US and UK pages.

CT’s Kings And Castles Footage

By Jim Rossignol on June 12th, 2010.

Gas Powered Games have been exhaustively videoblogging the progress of their new strategy game for a while now, but a lot of it seemed to consistent in Mr Taylor talking about farmyard animals, and I’ve kind of lost the thread. Anyway, there’s some actual footage from the game in this latest episode, which might be worth taking a gander at (gander! See, now I am at it.) Furthermore, I must implore you to judge what you see here at face value, as if it is all the game consists in. I am sure there are no other menus, features, units, or strategic elements to Kings And Castles whatsoever. It’s surely just a game about tiny men storming a bridge that eventually gets bombed by airships, and nothing more. Not like the other games that did things differently in the past. No, sir.

Dead Space 2: First Game Footage

By Jim Rossignol on June 12th, 2010.

Another of the big E3 reveals is the Dead Space sequel. The trailer shows zero-G action, some peculiar slow-mo stuff (is that bullet time? I am not sure what’s going on) and lots of the xenomorphs being blasted with space-guns/tools.

Super Duper Jam packed bucket this week. All the outlets are clamoring to exchange their SINGLE USE NON-TRANSFERABLE LICENSES for your money, so as usual I am taking up the mantle of great arbiter of value. For constantly updated video game cheapness, head to SavyGamer.co.uk. Here are the games that I am instructing you to consider purchasing this weekend.

APB ‘Key To The City’ Massive Key Giveaway

By John Walker on June 11th, 2010.

See, it's a key, with APB on it. This is a visual metaphor.

APB’s Key To The City event launches tomorrow. We’ve got the trifling matter of 50,000 keys to give away. Yes, we didn’t get the zeros wrong.

If you were a subscriber to RPS you’d have heard about this a while back and been guaranteed to have gotten one before the rush. And now, everyone else in the universe gets a go.

So if you want a key to play Realtime World’s APB Key To The City open beta from tomorrow, you need to CLICK RIGHT HERE. Stick in your email address, and until we run out of keys you should receive an email within an hour letting you know your key. Once you’ve done that, make sure to check out APB’s site from tomorrow morning to see details of when the beta goes live. We’re told 9am is a sensible time to check, whichever side of the Atlantic you’re on.

EDIT: We are assured by Realtime Worlds that EU codes should work for Rest Of World. Some are reporting they are not. Definitely try choosing EU and inserting an EU code. We are hearing stories of success too. US and EU definitely work.

EDIT 2: Canadians who did not receive US keys, please try again now. Every IP get 2 goes anyway. Sorry about this oversight.

Mafia II World Non-Exclusive E3 Trailer!

By John Walker on June 11th, 2010.

But there's new shots on Monday, so stop complaining.
EDIT: Ahem.

E3 is starting next week, but we aren’t affected by the trifling issues of linear time. So we have for you a world unexclusive reveal of the new Mafia II trailer, The Made Man.

This is not the only place you can watch the trailer until it’s released properly at E3 next week. Which means we’re the same as everyone else.

Sigh.
