Cybr? Deus Ex Human Revolution Trailer

By Kieron Gillen on June 4th, 2010.

Is your human augmentation a beard-trimmer?

And, as promised earlier in the week, the Deus Ex: Human Revolution trailer is on the electric internet. It’s over 3 minutes of world-building, cybernetics, riots, conspiracies, robots and gratuitous wearing of shades. It’s the sort of thing which I may have to go frame-by-frame another time. Until then, watch it below…

Wot I Think: Alpha Protocol

By John Walker on June 4th, 2010.

I choose to review this.

If you haven’t read my experiences with the first couple of hours of Alpha Protocol, it’s worth reading those first, since I’ll be building on top of that. That done, here’s Wot I Think:

Lord Of The Rings Online Goes Free-To-Play

By Kieron Gillen on June 4th, 2010.

Will this move be good for the game population's elf?

Gosh. No room for a rubbish gag in the headline. This must be what being Jim feels like. Anyway – Turbine’s actually-really-rather-good MMO is going free-to-play from fall this year. The game’s funding seems to be via micropayments via the Store (From the expansion packs and premium content to stuff like character customisation, character slots and utility items like potions) or become a VIP (Which gives access to all premium content and other bonuses). Worth noting it says that what you spend in the game shop can be earned in-game as well as bought. First impression? Really worth watching and possibly game-changing. Lord of the Rings Online is a genuinely strong MMO. Immediately, other free-to-play games start having a higher standard to live up to… and ones which demand a subscription start looking somewhat expensive. You can sign up for its Beta which launches on June 16th and the full-press release below…

Surf this, Charlie – Men of War: Vietnam

By Alec Meer on June 4th, 2010.

Turns out there’s not one, not two, not two, not two, but two new Men of War games due later this year. Jim forcibly craned your head towards MoW: Assault Squad last week, but now there’s Men of War: Vietnam too. Which I a) am quite excited about, as ‘Nam is not a territory RTS has often trod in and b) played for a little while a couple of weeks ago.

Twelve Minutes Of Elemental

By Jim Rossignol on June 4th, 2010.

…as narrated by Brad Wardell. We’re pretty excited about Stardock’s forthcoming role-play strategy, not least after this interview, and this video gives you a bit more of a taste of what to expect. It’s going to be a great big feast of a game, albeit for a slow-eater. This is not going to be a game for impatient folk, but it’s almost certainly going to be for Kieron. The big nerd.

The game is having a beta of sorts over the summer, and is set for an August 24th release. Anyway, go watch the video, below.

Company Of Heroes Online For US In Fall

By Jim Rossignol on June 4th, 2010.

And Canada, but apparently not Europe. Anyway, it seems that the free-to-play version of Relic’s RTS will be making its way back from its Asian success for a Western launch in the autumn. The notion is that you create a persistent profile which you can work on over time, playing through many multiplayer matches of the game as you go. It’s going to be microtransaction-supported, but the fairly useful Q&A that is up on the COH site says that they’re not ready to discuss details on quite how that will work for the US version of the game. All this won’t affect existing COH multiplayer, which will still be supported. Trailer below!

Darkfall: 14-Day Free Trial

By Jim Rossignol on June 4th, 2010.

It was fun times to sit and watch the Darkfall controversy, which culminated in Kieron reviewing the game for Eurogamer. But you don’t have to allow his clever words to control your feeble mind, because you can now judge for yourself with a 14-day trial. I know, just what I was waiting for, too.

KG EDIT: You need to be prepared to fight this guy…

A Climactic Battle: Scoregasm

By John Walker on June 4th, 2010.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

You know what I like? A nice bit of quiet. Not silence – that’s for creepy people. But a quiet sit down, some nice music, maybe a good book. Just imagine it. Think about sitting down with your feet up, a favourite song floating around you, as you thumb through the pages of a gentle story. It’s Tuesday afternoon, but you’ve got the week off work. No responsibilities, no pressures on your time, and a week of sunny calm stretching out in front of you. Mmmmmm. Now please watch the nine minutes of footage from Scoregasm, below:

Shogun 2 Trailer Explained, Plus Art

By John Walker on June 4th, 2010.

This man has a very big knife, and is angry with those men over there.

Yesterday we had it confirmed that Shogun 2: Total War is to come out next year. Today we have the first trailer. Where “trailer” means, “a man sticking a knife in a map.” So there’s some analysis of what this could mean below. There’s also some rather lovely promotional art stuff that you can enjoy.

The Proposition: So, Hey Baby Then…

By Kieron Gillen on June 3rd, 2010.

So yesterday I posted a pretty snarky link to the black satire of Hey Baby, presuming that everyone would get it. Checking back in later, I realised that people really weren’t. Since some of it was pretty noxious, I thought it best to close it. Leigh’s written about her personal experience, but I’m going to explain the joke. Apologies to our female readers, but this one’s going to be written for a male audience.

Messiah Complex Prt 2: Towards Mass Effect 3

By Kieron Gillen on June 3rd, 2010.

I left Mass Effect 2 in a similar mood to the way I left Dragon Age. I admired the craft, enjoyed it a lot but found myself dwelling on the question of “what next for Bioware?”. There’s ribs of the old Bioware skeleton sticking out, but some of the changes in format feel – to me – like transitional ones, on the way to something else. This is about thinking about the something else.
