The RPS Bargain Bucket: A Clear Schedule

By Lewie Procter on July 31st, 2010.

Back again. Sorry I wasn’t about last week, I was at the delightful Indietracks festival. I have a relatively clear schedule over the next few months, so you shouldn’t have to worry about paying more for games than you need to any more. Keep you eyes and web browsers located on SavyGamer.co.uk for cheap games throughout the week.

“All Human-on-Human Tragedy has a System”

By Kieron Gillen on July 31st, 2010.

I finally got around to watching Brenda Brathwaite‘s GDC 2010 presentation after Splash Damage’s Ed Stern twittered about it yesterday saying “it remains the most moving and exciting thing about games I’ve ever seen”. And I just lost a whole hour to her “How I dumped Electricity And Learned to Love Design” on a day I could scant afford to do so. It’s a few months old, but it’s brilliant stuff and – hey! – it’s a Saturday. It’s a talk about pure design and all the issues surrounding her re-embracing of analogue game design and the much-talked about Train. I will say no more, lest I spoil. Go watch.

EDIT: Sigh. Our mighty gaze appears to be causing sporadic weakness in the GDC vault. If it doesn’t work for you, do try later.

Apple’s Magic Trackpad & PC Games

By Alec Meer on July 30th, 2010.

Almost put up a blurry picture of my trackpad with my cat. Decided against it

I did a bad thing. I bought an Apple Magic Trackpad. I know, I know! In my defense, I intend to use it with a PC rather than a Mac, and I bought it primarily to try and ease up a nasty bout of RSI. The latter hasn’t worked one bit, so now I really have to work on justifying the former.

If you’re not aware of it – briefly, it’s an oversized multitouch trackpad, like you’d usually find on a laptop but strangely reimagined as a standalone Bluetooth unit that looks a bit like a desktop calendar that’s run out of pages. Though many (i.e. one person) have called me a fool for even trying, I have also gamed on it successfully. Somewhat.

BF3: A Mystery Wrapped In A Beta Engima

By Alec Meer on July 30th, 2010.

This isn't battlefield 3. This is Medal of Honor. Be still your beating heart.

We know nothing about Battlefield 3. Nothing. We don’t even know if there’ll actually be battlefields in it or not. Why, they might well be war-meadows instead. Or fight-commons. WE KNOW NOTHING. That hasn’t stopped EA from announcing a beta, and using it as a lure to make you buy the new Medal of Honor. Not just its standard copy, oh no. Purely its limited edition. Which is one more degree of abstraction than I believe we’ve previously had from betas’ original purpose.

NSFW! VERY NSFW! A Big Release: Sex Sim

By Kieron Gillen on July 30th, 2010.

Jim looks at the news-feed. “This one’s for Kieron”. He shows it to John and Quinns. “This one’s for Kieron”. They show it to me. I sigh. This one’s for me. Sex Sim has just released a client-demo. It’s a free-to-play game about the hot fuck. Clearly, I had to take it out for a ride. Ah, Sex Sim. Which is, of course, only a Dyslexic step away from Sexism, just in case you didn’t notice.

NSFW. Obviously. For God’s sake, don’t say you weren’t warned.

Galactic Bartender Episode 2: Last Orders

By Quintin Smith on July 30th, 2010.

This week: TWO bartenders on the space station? Double trouble!

The more time I spend with Space Station 13 the more impressed I am, but I’ll save that for a round-up post at a later date. For now, here’s another abstract update on my progress. If you missed it, Episode 1 can be found here. This is the adventures of Galactic Bartender Gengy Patel.

Barman’s log, stardate 40263.1. Dunno where to begin. I’m recording this from the station escape shuttle, and I’m sat beside the four other survivors of the blast. The bar’s been destroyed. I mean, technically the entire station’s been destroyed, but the bar was inside it. Today’s been a right pain in the arse.

EA Refund BF1943 On PC

By Jim Rossignol on July 30th, 2010.

Troubling news from the news-barons at VG247: EA are offering a no-quibble refund policy for pre-orders of Battlefield 1943 on PC. The shooter has been massively successful in consoleland, but has been heavily delayed on PC. It’s apparently still slated for this year despite missing the original June date. This, therefore, could just be a case of EA just being nice, rather than the project being dead. The pre-order options are still available for PC on the main site, at least. Hmm. We’ll try to find out a bit more.

Monkey Island 2 Spec Ed Review On PCG.com

By John Walker on July 30th, 2010.

Leather like a cow I've ever seen.

Are you interested in what you should be thinking about the new Monkey Island 2 Special Edition? Fortunately I’m here to tell you – what a spot of good news. My review for PC Gamer has made its way onto the Jaunty RPS Tribute Site PCGamer.com, over here. I say:

“By jove, they’ve got it! Last year saw LucasArts remake the original Secret of Monkey Island with gorgeous new graphics and fantastic voice acting. And then, through some arcane form of voodoo, they managed to make it maddeningly irritating to play. A crazed muddle of menus, inputs and berserk design decisions spoiled a game that was never as good as people remembered it being. Forget all of that – Monkey Island 2: Special Edition has fixed absolutely everything, and was a far better game to begin with.”

StarCrafted: LEGO StarCraft

By Quintin Smith on July 30th, 2010.

I wonder how much lego I ate as a kid? Enough for a few of those SCVs, I suspect.

Why not take a “brick” from playing StarCraft 2 (ha! ah) to watch a Lego animation of the original game? Brought to our attention by the fabulous Joystiq, the video features base-building, combat and the sweetest cotton-wool explosions you’ve ever seen, and you can find it right after the jump.

Killed It With Kisses: Kane & Lynch 2 Trailer

By Kieron Gillen on July 30th, 2010.

I am basically him.

Following the demo earlier in the week, Io are continuing their attempts to get everyone all worked up over the return of their burly men shooter with a new trailer. They’re not doing a bad job. The trailer’s a lot of fun, especially the ENORMOUS PINK LETTERS. Early word on this is actually impressively positive, with a “Best second iteration after a disappointing first game since Assasin’s Creed” sort of vibe. You can also pre-order at the moment at Steam to get 10% off, if you’re already sold. The trailer follows…

Micro WIT: Snark Busters

By John Walker on July 30th, 2010.

First person to try hidden object in 3D wins a nothing.

Look, I don’t much care if you disapprove of Hidden Object games. There’s kerbillions of us who think they’re great, and if we all formed together into one giant robot we’d be able to crush your puny army with our mighty object-finding fists. And we will. Snark Busters: Welcome To The Club is a rare example of an attempt to deviate from the core concept (search locations for a list of objects under the auspices of a plot so tenuous that Dan Brown would find it shameful), that succeeds in proving rather a lot of extremely silly fun.
