The World Of Tanks closed beta is in motion, and Wargaming.net have put out a new trailer to celebrate (below). It’s not a trailer I understand, however. Perhaps it’s mocking the Blur adverts or something? I am tiny brain. Anyway, the more important consideration is: tanks a lot? Or tanks but no tanks? Ah, the pun barrel is hollow and oh so empty.

Excellent video.

Oh shoot, I need to install this and try it out.
TANKS!

Maybe taking the piss out of NFSO. But yeah TANKS

i got into the beta…. played a few battles and got utterly owned in my crappy little scout tank. it didnt help that there are usually a few ppl on each team with much stronger tanks… made it rather hard to do any damage when my cannon throws little stones at the enemy, and theirs hurls deadly shells of deadly deadliness….
but i shall not give up! yet…. I’ll go back on in a bit and see if im doing something drastically wrong….

I’ve been playing, it’s a lot of fun. The starter tanks can be effective once you pick up on the tactics, and early upgrades don’t take long to acquire. I’ve only been in light tank battles with some basic artillery and tank destroyers, so I’m not sure how it will balance out against heavy ones.
09/07/2010 at 20:45 JustasM says:
I would love to try it, but I am hesitant that I will not be able to drive around in fancy racing cars…
Coming to think of it, have tanks ever been used as obstacles in any racing titles?
09/07/2010 at 20:52 Lord_Mordja says:
Just got a T-46; SOVIET MIGHT SUPREME!
Yeah this game is pretty fun and I especially like the ability to leave your wrecked tank in battle, play another game and still get all the XP and $.

WoT is pretty good. There are a few UI niggles and the lack of any kind fo tutorial isd a touch offputting to begin with but its the most polished Beta I’ve seen in a while.

Do want. Any word on what sort of money this game is gonna cost?

Awesome..watched the trailer, remembered that I applied for the beta some time ago, checked my trash email account, got an invitation

I had a good few games of this last night, and although it was good fun, it made me swear constantly.
I think it has given me Turret’s.

Bravo, sir!

Well done!
While listening to the Beastie Boys’ SABOTage (tank you for the music), I could almost no longer stand the HEAT last night. With this damn sun on my window and walls, my sanity holds by a single thread.
Drat, now my soup is boiling all over my ceramic plates.

I am playing artillery!
It’s like I’m really a good player!

I saw you ingame. You were wrecking folks. I hate arty :(
09/07/2010 at 23:08 Bob Bobson says:
Looks good, I really want to play. But I’ve not heard anything back from my beta application so I guess I’ll just have to be patient.

So, is there an RPS clan yet? If so, details please!
10/07/2010 at 08:38 Mad Doc MacRae says:
Playing the beta as a tank destroyer, and it’s a lot of fun. I forget where I got my key (it was in the comments section of the last post on WoT) but you might still be able to get it from there.
And the artillery is really dangerous when everyone is in crappy tanks, but once the higher tiered tanks that are either heavier or faster show up, arty starts being a bit more reasonable, while still being useful.
Arty is always saving my bacon when I miss a shot, so I should be grateful.
10/07/2010 at 17:40 Torgen says:
The key to surviving vs arty is to NEVER STOP if you’ve been spotted. Once any enemy unit sees you, the arty can click over and see you in a bird’s eye view and rain hot death. The key is to keep moving, so the arty guy has to move the sight to follow you (which causes the dispersion circle to get way larger.)
I was totally sucking at arty all night, lucky to get a direct fire shot at an onrushing tank before I died, until one urban map where all the enemy tanks would stop and try to snipe around corners at our guys.
5 kills. :D
10/07/2010 at 10:17 DarkFenix says:
Playing the beta right now and it’s actually a pretty excellent game. As mandrill says, it’s a really polished beta, the devs have clearly focused on making a working game before they add all the content (there are a lot of content gaps to be plugged) and it’s refreshing to see this approach.
It’s pretty bad being stuck in a small tank in a big boys’ fight, light tanks just don’t have the health to take a beating. My advice? Find a medium or heavy and stick to them like glue.
10/07/2010 at 10:59 Tagert says:
This game is quite awesome.
I heartily encourage everyone to try it. :D
Also, the T-26 with the rapid fire cannon I’ve found to be awesome.
10/07/2010 at 19:49 Torgen says:
I think I wasted my money on the BT-2 :(
12/07/2010 at 01:25 Tagert says:
The BT-2 isn’t bad. It’s wtffast, pretty perfect for a scout for artillery, if you’re into that kind of thing.
Also, I will advise that you avoid the T-46 and go for a higher level tank.
12/07/2010 at 01:27 Tagert says:
I also seem to recall seeing you last night, Torgen. Can’t recall what you were doing though. :D
Also, had an awesome run in an MS-1. (The noob Russian tank) Got knocked down to 1% with a damaged right track (but nothing else, surprisingly) after killing one other tank.
I then proceeded to kill four more tanks and capture the enemy base, winning the game. All in my little crappy MS-1. Go Russian power!

I recommend playing with either eurobeat or speed metal as a soundtrack. Or both.
10/07/2010 at 17:10 DrGonzo says:
After about 2 or 3 hours playing this game I finally killed another tank. But it did take me that long to get my first kill. And only after upgrading the canon on my starter Russian tank. Get the burst fire turret and you start doing well.
10/07/2010 at 17:43 Torgen says:
Stay in the recruit battles until you can afford a nice tank, else you’re going to be going against Tigers and upgraded T34s in your weenie tank. I decided to bling out my weenie tank to help with survivability and kill chances. Check the (surprisingly robust) tech tree to see where you want to work towards, as some of the optional things you can research and equip now can be reused on other vehicle.
11/07/2010 at 04:44 D says:
I dunno how smart it is.. But you can use the tech tree to tech past a tank if you don’t want it, it just needs getting the free xp (unrestricted to tank type) by using some gold to convert. I’m doing it to skip past the 70k panzer II A, ofcourse it just means i have to save up 180k for the panzer III type. So as I said, I don’t know if its smart, but it’s not obvious you can use the tech tree to research, so I thought I’d mention it.
10/07/2010 at 18:16 Vogel says:
I entered my key on the site but have not received the final “confirmation” email to activate my account.
How long did it take for you guys who got in to get that email back? Maybe the office is closed on the weekend and its manually sent out?
Looking forward to trying this out, already downloaded the client.
11/07/2010 at 03:11 Jhoosier says:
I applied not 10min ago, got the confirm email and am downloading the client as we speak.
So…for some people this is working ok.
10/07/2010 at 18:20 Marcin says:
I’m in the same situation as Vogel. I got a key, entered it, never got any emails. Yes, I checked my spam filters.
And there’s no apparent way to re-send the confirmation, either :/
Ah well. I guess I’ll just wait for this to come out.
11/07/2010 at 02:34 Darkdobe says:
To those waiting for keys – there’s a few sites doling them out, and a good few end up taking some 15-60 minutes to actually SEND you your key. Mine took in the range of 30 minutes.
That being said – this game has been utterly devouring my time of late – very awesome.
To the new players: Your Russian starter tank is far superior to the german turd – however, since you can hop in one tank while the other is dead, use the Leichtraktor as a backup and work towards unlocking the better German vehicles. For example the first tier Tank Destroyer for the Germans is rather excellent (and they only get better from there). Another popular choice seems to be aiming for the Leopard light tank – rediculously fast and well rounded, although it is a few tiers in. Basically anything except that first German tank will perform much better!
To give an idea of their overall playstyle however: Russians tend towards lighter armor and more damaging guns – ideal for assault tactics and hitting flanks/rears. Russians do have a more developed artillery tech tree, however they lack the hordes of mid level tanks that the German’s bring to the field.
Germans tend towards heavier armor, and while their weapons do less damage, their penetration vs armor is higher – this means a German tank will do better overall damage against frontal armor, but won’t gain all that much of an advantage from flanking as a Russian counterpart would – More of a defensive mentality overall.

Just to let folks know, we’re starting Rock, Paper, Sherman in World of Tanks. Haven’t actually started an ingame clan, because none of us have looked into how to do so . :P
