FPS Terminator Alpha Demo

By Jim Rossignol on July 20th, 2010 at 9:59 am.

The Gears of War mod team who were trying to make a Terminator shooter have switched their efforts over to UDK, and the results are pretty fancy. You can check out their video, below, or actually go and play the thing by grabbing it from their Moddb page. I’ve not had a chance to look at it yet (Alien Swarm to play) but you won’t need UDK installed to make it work, so why am I mentioning it? A mystery. Also there are some fiddles in the install instructions, so pay attention.

A good looking FPS in the Terminator universe to be the heir of Future Shock? Yes, please!

    • diebroken says:

You mean, SkyNET (with its dazzling ‘hi-res’ graphics update) wasn’t good enough?! ;)

  2. Daniel Rivas says:

    Looks like Killzone.

    • jeremypeel says:

I think the Terminator setting would be pretty great for a Killzone-esque multiplayer FPS. Looking like this.

When was the last good Terminator game? Bethesda’s are pretty well remembered aren’t they?

    • bill says:

Skynet was the last good terminator game.

And future shock was the first.

A few of the earlier bethesda ones are interesting, and the lightgun arcade one was kinds fun. But it basically boils down to those two.

Future shock is one of my all time favourite single player FPS games. Got criminally overlooked when Quake launched about a week later.

PS/ a few of the peoples on GOG were playing the multiplayer demo a while back, and had a package that works on modern systems: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/terminator_skynet_demo_play_some_multiplayer

  3. Rich says:

Looks fun but frantic. The collision of crashing aircraft is odd, with no sense of weight or rigidity.

Also the player is an idiot. Two terminators walk past so he goes and stabs the one in front, waiving his arse at the one behind. Silly boy. That sort of mistake will get you killed.

I’ve got enough stuff to play to bother getting it to work. Still, when it’s finished I’ll definitely give it a go.

  4. Shadrach says:

Those Terminators seem kind of stupid to be the über powerful killing machines they are supposed to be.

    • Rich says:

Stupid and not all that hard to kill.
When the player ran up to try hand to hand, I thought he’d gone mad. It’d be like trying to have a fist fight with a JCB.

    • Pew says:

But aren’t Terminators basically metal zombies with guns?

    • Optimaximal says:

Metal hyper-intelligent zombies who don’t eat brains or turn you into one of their masses should they bite you.

So not really zombies at all…

      Or were you being sarcastic?

    • Pew says:

They don’t eat brains, but are out to kill you.
They are a slow threat and hard to kill.
You can run but in the end they always get you.

Although those are really broad terms that are not very effective…

But I just meant that both Terminators and zombies create the same kind of tension (in movies at least) because they are basically undefeatable until you figure out how. Yeah yeah, a headshot works on zombies until you escape to an enclave (that also has zombies) and a giant press, molten metal and a nuke work on Terminators. I don’t think I ever experienced T2′s feeling of “how in the hell are they supposed to kill it?” after having seen that at age 10 or something though :)

  5. Demon Beaver says:

This looks a lot like a Triple-A title. Not sure if that’s a compliment.
To be honest, though, the Terminator universe looked like Gears of War long before GoW came out…
kudos to the developers, who obviously created a very polished, if a bit derivative, shooter. I like how chaotic the battlefield seems.
On the other hand, how the frigg do you melee a Terminator? A 2-meter tall metal killing machine? So what if every other shooter has melee, it doesn’t mean you can turn off a T-600 by pushing a button on its neck…
I might play this, but to be fair, I’ll judge it according to the same guidelines I judge any futuristic Cover-FPS.

    • stahlwerk says:

If that rebel guy from T1 had just bothered to print out the T800 service manual…

    • Optimaximal says:

In all fairness, melee shouldn’t be used for damage, rather knocking the machines off balance and disorienting them…

Humans always have an edge over Terminators because of their unpredictability – no machine that can pick up a car and crush a human skull would expect some oportunistic fleshbag to hit them with the butt of a rifle, thus it would leave them exposed to being knocked over or even just forcing them to recalculate the situation.

Basically, Kyle Reese hit the T800 with a metal bar in T1… He died 2-3 seconds later, but we can learn from such lessons.

    • Nallen says:

The game should have melee attacks, but when you do the attack you should get your butt kicked for no effect :)

  6. stahlwerk says:

I’m not in the know on Terminator future lore, so what are these electric discharges and catapult fireballs supposed to be? Is the horde approaching?

Also, that’s not how helicopters (cease to) work.

Looks very nice. Near future with pew pew lasers and killbots is sadly underused as a game setting.

  7. Frankle says:

Did he use a vulcan nerve pinch on that terminator?
Nice maps but everything else really needs a lot of work. will see how it turs out when it’s finished

  8. Adrian says:

Wait… did Terminator have laser guns that could take down entire aircrafts? And whats he doing to that terminator? Giving him a massage?

  9. aerozol says:

The great thing is, if something really bothers you, and you take a few seconds let them know about it, it will possibly be changed.
    makes me happy <3

  10. Schmung says:

I gave up trying to download it as I was only getting 9k a sec from moddb. What sort of systems are you guys running? I’m afraid it may be pointless on my meagre e5200 with ati4850.

    • Krondonian says:

I’ve an entry level quad core, same graphics card. Had some lag, but perfectly playable if you lower the resolution a bit.

I found it incredibly hard though, getting expoloded repeatedly by fireballs from the sky. Really impressive for what it is, all in all.

  11. CMaster says:

Indeed. I was also making games at around about that age with Klik and Play.
If you really want, you can download some of them by clicking on my name link.

(Not to say that this game isn’t good, haven’t looked. Just to agree with other posters saying 8 year olds making competent games isn’t unimaginable)

  12. LuminosXI says:

I see alot of people saying that this doesnt look very impressive, or that the player in the video wasn’t very good. I dont wanna sound preachy…..but this is a UDK mod……hardly even beta material and people are critiquing it like its a released game or a mod thats been in the works for years.

  13. Schizoslayer says:

You never need to have UDK installed to install a UDK game. All UDK products are entirely standalone.

  14. runbmp says:

Yea I agree, I think the entire execution for a mod team this is very impressive. Keep em coming!

  15. torchedEARTH says:

It looks…like so many other FPS of our time…that you are blasting away in a chaotic soup of future hell with little or no feedback to the player about wtf they are hitting or doing damage to.

I mean, you shoot a terminator for a bit, sparks fly and it falls over.

You shoot at one of those flying hunter seekers with an assault rifle? Really guys?

They had their chance and they blew it.

    • Dominic White says:

Are you seriously shitting all over a pre-alpha tech demo for a freeware fan-game? Seriously?

PC gaming seems to foster some people with the most amazingly insane entitlement complexes.

    • Alexander Norris says:

You shoot at one of those flying hunter seekers with an assault rifle? Really guys?

It’s an LMG he exchanges his assault rifle for. He picks the AR up again after.

    • aerozol says:

I’m sure the devs will send you your refund if you let them know about it.
Since their free fan-game ‘blew it’. Wth…

  16. duel90 says:

THERE ARE GUNS ON THE GROUND
as depicted by this sun shaped silhouette

  17. TentSalesman says:

Err, is it just me or have they nicked the assault rifle from Killzone 2?

  18. JohnnyMaverik says:

Wow now people, this is an Alpha demo that is just showing off a small segment of what they’ve been working on. A bit less slagging off the gameplay trailer and a bit more actually playing it and giving them some feedback maybe?

  19. Skurmedel says:

Think it looks pretty good. At least decidedly pretty.

  20. Navagon says:

Looking very impressive so far. It certainly looks like a pro effort and something I’d enjoy playing. There are some gameplay issues to sort out (like meleeing the terminator, weapons standing bolt upright and looking like they’ve been bathed in radiation and taking down the HK with the assault rifle), but nothing that can’t be sorted out. Keep up the excellent work, guys!

  21. Will says:

    Looks good.

    The RPS readership, less so.

  22. Will says:

A lot of the people running this down don’t seem to have paid attention to the movies either. This is set in the future – so that gun he’s using at the start fires lasers, that ‘helicopter’ is actually a Hunter Killer jet-engine robot, and he probably melees the terminator with some sort of gadget he chucks onto its spine.

Looking forward to it if they make the terminators less cannon fodderish.

    • Rich says:

The ‘helicopter’ mentioned might have been the helicopter in the trailer that is actually, you know, a helicopter. Did you see the black hawk (like) chopper get hit by a fireball and bounce off that big pipe?

It’s OK to be critical. Just because something is free or indie, doesn’t make it above comment.
It’s not even an entitlement issue. They’re making their work public, so we’re allowed to talk about it.

    • stahlwerk says:

Hm, I guess the helicopter thing is directed at me. I know that there’s a Hunter-Killer droid in the “trailer” (having played future shock), but shortly after that a blackhawk-looking helicopter is hovering dangerously close to some pipeline/overpass looking thing. There’s an explosion in its midsection, but then it spins as if the tail-rotor was abruptly destroyed. It just struck me as odd (also having never seen anything mechanical in the Terminator-future besides Skynet’s own stuff).

Well, cheers.. who am I to argue realism in a game with sentient bipedal robots, anyway? :-D

  23. skyturnedred says:

Looks nice, but you shouldn’t be able to kill terminators so easily. After all, they are TERMINATORS!

  24. JKjoker says:

this looks like what i was expecting from the last movie/game and never got, its maybe a bit too dark tho (i know the setting is like that but how about a helmet with a smart display ?), you can barely see anything

i agree the terminators should be tougher, the melee take down is weak, if you could take down a terminator by gently tapping his shoulder the original movie wouldnt have been that much fun, i could accept it if he had some sort of gadget or put a grenade inside it’s chest or something, also terminators should be able to lose limbs and keep coming, thats sort of their thing

  25. Tei says:

Maybe the modders can make a game based on the Judge Dreed universe. I have read somewhere that is a very interesting one (that can eat alive Carmagedoom and others).
It can have zombies, toxic barrels, amazing vehicles and lots of guns and fun.

I feel the future of terminator was never designed to be visited, and theres something very wrong on tryiing to explore it.

  26. Kato says:

Great graphics, but really, he’s getting rid of those Terminators too easily.

Oh, as far as the melee goes–it’s a known fact that most endoskeleton Terminators have a neck weakness, especially the T-600 (although these look to be more like T-800s which covered the neck up with armour but still retain the weakness).

Hate hate HATE the aircraft explosions :( I’ll give it a play though.

  27. bill says:

Looks very cool, especially for a mod.

All terminator games have the slight problem that if you make the terminators invincibly tough then the game just isn’t fun. But if you make them too easy then they aren’t scary.

Though as far as i can tell, the future setting means that the resistance has lasers and other advanced tech, so it’s not unreasonable to have them downing terminators.
Also, even in the movies the general battlefield terminators didn’t seem that smart – more like zombies/drones really. It only seemed to be the infiltrators that had the AI and speed to be more adaptive.

So I see nothing major to nitpick about, and instead i’ll wonder when all the RPS commenters became so mean…

  28. Jakkar says:

I wonder if at any point the developers noticed the player-character is acting more like a terminator than the terminators are..

  29. wazups2x says:

My main problems with the demo:
    1) The Field of View is VERY low. It actually was making me sick to the stomach.
    2) There is a slight lag with the mouse movement.

    • blah says:

Probably because it’s essentially a Gears of War mod (using the UDK)… normally in 3rd person.

  30. Dhatz says:

shoulda called it cyborgs versus robots, because it’s nothing like playing humans against terminators. Lame metal couldn’t shoot chopper off the sky before it reached it’s destination. why don’t we get proper terminator game of Xmen Origins Wolverine quality?

  31. drawcarlos says:

I keep seeing “modders” and “Mod Team” get it straight people, you too Jim, this mod was made by one guy. This guy to be exact http://www.moddb.com/members/gridlockshock, I been following this since it was a Gears Of War mod.

  32. vine says:

Might have some potential, but generic shooter looks generic.

  33. hj says:

That doesnt look very exciting to me. Why dont they animate some cardboard figures instead? I think cardboards have around the same armor as the Terminators and JKs in this video here. Around 5 bullets for a JK? Cardboards should give you the same kick! And killing a Terminator with bare hands from behind while another Termiator is watching? What’s that supposed to mean? How did those machines manage to extinct almost the entire mankind, if a Terminator cant even shot some sort of loony trying to get a ride on the back on another Terminators back just in front of him? Dont tell me I have to wait another 10 years till I finally get the kind of Terminator-FPS that I dream of for so long.
