Sure, while they’re all playing Starcraft II the rest of us have to find something to do. How about grumbling at a band? Did you even know Linkin Park were still going? It was only this afternoon that I was ranting at my poor, disinterested girlfriend that it’s a travesty that Linkin Park were ever so popular, while no one’s heard of Idiot Pilot. Silly singy/shouty pop plop. Well, apparently I’m completely out of the loop, as EA’s response to Modern Warfare, the relaunching of Medal Of Hono(u)r, is to feature Linkin Park’s new single, The Catalyst.
Well, now you want it, right? The single comes from their next album, A Thousand Suns, which is due out in September. The single comes out 2nd August, and it seems a trailer for Medal Of Honor will also appear that day, directed by the band’s turntabler Jo Hahn, accompanied by the full length version of the song. Then the song will appear in the game, due out 12th October.
So we can look forward to Medal Of Honor, a game we’re assured is being “developed in collaboration with U.S. Special Operations soldiers,” featuring pleas to know why “My life just so fucking hurts right now.” And perhaps as we watch the soldiers dying brutal deaths we’ll hear a screamed explanation for why his heart just really aches right now. Then a man will rap about how his feelings aren’t being recognised by either his girl or his friends.
So here’s the teaser for the trailer/single (I’ve watched it twice, and both times I managed not to notice the song – but then I’m old.)
And by way of an apology, here’s some Transplants:

Hmmm… There are many things I rely on John Walker for. Well, maybe not many; but several. Such as consistently writing the funniest section of a certain well-known UK PC games magazine, that isn’t shutting down in September. From this post I have learned taste in music is not one of the things that belongs on that list.
In other news, still not as odd a pairing as Dragon Age and Manson. This is the new shit indeed.
28/07/2010 at 01:35 mlaskus says:
Am I the only person in the universe who liked that trailer? The Morrigan romance scene didn’t fit in it at all, but apart from that it was great.

28/07/2010 at 01:23 Miko says:
That’s quite a departure for them. With the piano and tom rolls it sounds like it could be from the 70s.
The songwriting’s exactly the same as always, of course.
And the game.. looks like a semi-realistic military shooter, which means I’m exactly as interested in it as I am in finding out more about Spencer Pratt’s new shoe line. Fuck off, semi-realistic military shooters. I’d rather play a Linkin Park simulator.

Bleh, this looks exactly like CoD. If EA wants MoH to be relevant again they should try to be original, not imitate what IW is doing.

I played the MoH beta for 1 hour and some minutes, I seriously gave it a try but it just plain sucked. BC2 is loads better, and its just sad.. I mean.. BF2 was way better ofcourse in general, well for its time. But seriously MoH sucks. Its even worse then MW2, and believe me when i say that i hate that game. Atleast MW2 had a good prequel.. Cod4. which was good when it first got released..
Meh.. kinda got bored with current fps. its fun sometimes with friends but otherwise? nah. Starcraft 2 should be in the mailbox tomorrow!

Damn a lot of y’all are some pissy folks. I really don’t understand where all the Linkin Park hate comes from.
28/07/2010 at 18:56 Starky says:
LK are just one of those bands that it was “cool to hate” in the early 00′s, and frankly RPS commentors are very, very snobbish about a great many things.
It is one of the things I like least about this community, the palpable sense of elitism. Sometimes warranted elitism granted – unlike some communities this one can converse in properly spelled words (mostly), have intelligent discussion on myriad topics, and usually side-step trolls and idiots.
The downside of a fairly savvy community as evidenced in this thread, offhand snobbery and dismissal of popular, and/or mainstream things.
28/07/2010 at 18:58 Nick says:
Yup, definitly everyone hates them because its cool to do so, not because they are medicore trash. Certainly snobbery.
28/07/2010 at 19:38 Starky says:
I’d agree with you that almost every song they’ve had played on the radio, or be in the charts is mediocre, but trash? No, I think that is going a bit too far. Still dig a little deeper and you find some hidden gems in their back catalogue.
Still, utterly subjective thing musical taste, one mans trash is another mans treasure and all that – I just don’t understand the need some people have to define themselves by their taste in music – and more so look down upon those who don’t share it, or those who like music they consider “lesser”.
28/07/2010 at 19:52 Alexander Norris says:
No, it’s just that they’re shit.
29/07/2010 at 01:55 HawkesOfSavileRow says:

28/07/2010 at 18:51 Starky says:
Linkin Park had a few very good songs, I can understand the hate, hell there is always a massive backlash of hate when a band becomes massive – which flips in 20-30 years when they become retro.
Most of the good songs though were not the shouty metal ones, but the slower, lyrical ones with Mike Shinoda rapping. Though a few of the shouty ones are good too, and the remix album is inspired.
Then again I recently re-discovered linkin park after a friend told me that I needed to listen to a album by Fort Minor (not knowing the linkin park link) and liked it.
The Track Kenji is utter poetry.
Still, far too much faux-snobbery going on in this thread – from people who probably only ever heard 1-2 Linkin Park songs (the mainstream hits) and dismiss them offhand.
The hate LK bandwagon ended years ago guys, it’s okay to get off it now, you need not like them but the snobbery is just sad.
28/07/2010 at 19:00 Psychopomp says:
Who says we’re bandwaggoning?
Nu-Metal is the worst genre known to man, rivaled only by Krunkcore
28/07/2010 at 19:25 Starky says:
Dismissing an entire genre of music? That is even worse than band waggoning.
There are only 2 genre’s of music I near universally (almost) dislike, and that is Country and Western, and boy/girl group pop/ Yet one of my favourite songs is Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt, and have many songs by girl groups/boy bands in my collection that get played often.
Nu-metal is a stupid term, one that people love to bitch about, but really could you name more than 3 bands who may fit into that category?
Either the answer is no, or the answer is almost every vaguely rock/electronic band of the past 15 years because the definition of “nu-metal” is so broad to be utterly pointless.
Here is a Wiki-list ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nu_metal_bands ), are you seriously telling me that you find no songs from any of the bands listed there good, or even passable?
Personally I think some of the bands there have recorded some of the best music of this generation.

Starky:
If there’s one thing most people could agree upon in what you say, it’d likely be about that definition being so broad as to be pointless. Genre definitions are of dubious value in general and that wiki list is ludicrously inclusive. Going by the ones that I know, I’d have to say that there are quite a number that don’t share anything of significance (if someone can point out something that Rage Against the Machine have in common with Dir En Grey or Alien Ant Farm besides the obvious “having guitars and drums” stuff, I’ll be suitably impressed).
29/07/2010 at 03:20 TeeJay says:
Here’s an attempt:
AAF & RATM
Both are ‘heavy’ rock 4-piece bands with that alternative/new style (baggy, skater, baseball-hatted, tattooed, pierced). Both are within the ‘rock’ genre for their main sound with rap, funk and punk influences. RATM has a far stronger riff-based, funk and rap style and more angry and political lyrics. AAF has a stronger melodic and upbeat style. For fans of the genre they are fairly distinct but for people from outside the genre they sound fairly similar (mainly due to using a similar ‘heavy rock’ guitar/bass/drums/vocal style mixed with more funky breakbeat rhythms).
Do I win a cookie?

29/07/2010 at 16:49 Starky says:
Hey I’ve no problem with people who don’t like a band, or group or even a musical style – I’m not really a nu-metal or linkin park fan, I never bought an album of theirs (just a couple of tracks), or saw them live or anything, or wore a T-shirt of theirs… (RATM yes, Chilli’s yes, even Radiohead, Greenday and Korn – but never LK).
I’m just a guy who likes a fairly wide range of music, which includes a couple of linkin park tracks, and really doesn’t understand the hatred, and contempt some people have for it.
In the long list of 00′s era bands they are a long way off the bottom.
That said, country music sucks, and anyone who likes glee is a drooling idiot (here’s hoping my girlfriend doesn’t read that, or she will KILL me :P).
