Stale Air And Stolen Thunder

By Tim Stone on July 21st, 2010.

I was up at Farnborough International Airshow yesterday, and, while having a crafty fag round the back of the Fuel-Air Weapons Marquee, was lucky enough to run into one of gaming’s most elusive genres. Dishevelled and smelling slightly of wet ferrets, Flight Simulation was in a surprisingly talkative mood. During the course of an hour-long chat we covered numerous topics, none more fascinating than the changing fortunes of the gent himself. Read the rest of this entry »

By Lewis Denby on July 21st, 2010.

And what do you mean, ‘How come this week’s column covers 17 days of mod news?’ You’re going mad. You should get that checked out. You should read past the jump for interesting and/or entertaining mod happernings.

Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead Demo

By Jim Rossignol on July 21st, 2010.

A demo? A demo! Turns out BIS are releasing a fairly beefy demo for the recent expansion pack, Operation Arrowhead, including some single player scenarios, a mission from the main campaign, some multiplayer missions and even the mission editor. Get the 3gb download here.

EA/Maxis Producing Darkspore

By Jim Rossignol on July 21st, 2010.

It might sound like a medical condition, but it’s actually an “online, science-fiction action/RPG”. There’s a bunch of information on the Darkspore site, including a teaser trailer. Looks like an attempt to rework the Spore systems and make it a bit more palatable to mainstream gamers. Here’s EA’s blurb:

“Darkspore is inspired in part by the award-winning creature editor tech of Spore, but also in large part from the team’s own passion for gaming and prior experience,” said Lucy Bradshaw, General Manager of Maxis Studio. “The team has combined these inspirations to produce a unique take on the action RPG genre.”

Darkspore will feature dynamic, fast-paced action as players battle across alien worlds to save the galaxy from the mutated forces of Darkspore in a four-player co-operative and full single-player campaign, as well as intense multiplayer battles. In order to defeat the malicious Darkspore, players will need to collect an arsenal of living weapons – genetic heroes with different combat abilities – and upgrade them with tens of thousands of collectible body parts and armor.

Release set for February 2011.

Debbie American McGee’s Alice Returns

By Alec Meer on July 20th, 2010.

Excellent bighairosity

EA just did a thing with some guys, and at that thing they totally said they were making some new some stuff with some other guys. One piece of said stuff is a sequel to “cult hit” American McGee’s Alice. The man who always puts his name on the box now seems to not be putting his name on the box – this will be called simply Alice: Madness Returns.

Details and a rather icky, but also slightly silly, teaser trailer are below.

An Hour With… Blur

By Alec Meer on July 20th, 2010.

The achievement for beating the female driver is called

Well, more like three hours. Make of that what you will. Particularly if it’s “Alec hasn’t had the internet for several weeks so being able to play games again is probably over-exciting him.”

So: figured I’d take a look at Bizarre Creations’ powerup-infused racer Blur, which seemed (on console at least) a little overshadowed in May by redemptive cowboys and men who were awake. On PC, it seemed barely mentioned, including by us bunch of hapeless jonnies. Whoops.

Shelter Skelter: Sanctuary 17

By Quintin Smith on July 20th, 2010.

Well that's what you get when you buy cheap batteries.

Wonder-blog IndieGames.com has posted a link to Sanctuary 17, a top-down browser shooter set in some dark, dank, robot-filled tunnels. Say what you like about gamers, we sure know where to have a good time. Sanctuary 17 sees you picking your way through this mysterious maze as an explorer for some last bastion of humanity, collecting equipment for yourself, repairing subsystems for the survivors back home and accessing terminals in a Marathon stylee to piece together the story. More excitingly, it’s also a bit spooky.

Astro-logical: Starport Gemini

By Jim Rossignol on July 20th, 2010.

LGM Games send word that their debut game, an RPG set in somewhere called “Space”, has a trailer. I’ve posted it below. It’s intriguing. LGM’s Mario Mihokovic says: “Starpoint Gemini is a through-and-through RPG set in space. You want it, we got it: great looking space battles, massive fleet fights, character advancement that can be enjoyed by all RPG fans, detailed and vibrant game world, smart AI captains that adapt to your playing style and offer a good old-fashioned challenge, intriguing storyline with twists and plots…”

See, I said it was intriguing. Intriguing. Go take a look. (It’s starts off slow, but I like that derelict salvage. I would totally do that if I were in Space. Sigh.) Release date: UNKNOWN.

Finite Crisis: DC Universe Online Beta

By Jim Rossignol on July 20th, 2010.

Sign ups are open for DC Universe Online’s beta-testing carnival of superheroic fun. Should you bother hauling your digi-carcass over there and signing up? Probably. Kieron’s hands-on write up a while back was pretty positive. I have to admit I’ve not been following the game all that closely, but it’s looking intriguingly action-oriented. I guess I should pay more attention. Bad psychic cobwebs from it being SOE, or something.

RPS Verdict: Alien Swarm

By RPS on July 20th, 2010.

It's important to keep your aliens warm.

Alien Swarm is out! And free! A four-player co-op alien-shooting game. What better choice for a four-person blogging team to Verdict? Except that Kieron’s on a plane, and Alec’s locked in a cell deep underground. So it fell to Jim and John to dispense the only correct thoughts and opinions anyone should have. Thanks to Phill and John G. for making up our numbers. Read our thoughts on the game below.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution to arrive Feb ’11?

By Quintin Smith on July 20th, 2010.

TONIGHT'S HEADLINE: MASSIVE LIPS SNEAK UP ON DAVINA MCCALL

The nano-augmented journomen over at VG247 have reported that the Steam page for Deus Ex: Human Revolution has been updated to show a February 2011 release date. Intriguing. But what could it mean? My theory is that it means the game will be released in February 2011 and we’ll all be arguing with cyber-bartenders and grabbing men through walls a little earlier than expected. But that’s just a theory. Curse these cryptic viral marketing ploys. What do you think it means, readers?
