Mod News: Hilarity Ensues

By Lewis Denby on August 4th, 2010 at 12:26 pm.

At the end of this week’s Mod News, I will present you with the funniest thing I’ve read in ages. I’m mean, so you’ll have to wait until right at the end, and I’m sure you wouldn’t even think of scrolling down. First, you’ll have to ingest and process the most interesting in this week’s happenings from the mod scene. Laughs are a dessert.

NEWS

Alexander Lincoln can take credit for pointing me in the direction of this one. It’s a CoH mod called Modern Combat, which last week released pictures of guns. Which, as we’ve previously established, is not news. Except it is when it’s an awesome gun, and there’s a video and everything. So that’s just dandy.

Meanwhile, HL2 single-player horror thing Visage continues to have me very excited. For a couple of reasons, actually, but I’ll leave that for another time. For now, it’s because of this new teaser trailer, which arrives at the same time as this extraordinary concept art. I have it on good authority that its team members are ploughing several hours of their free time per day into Visage, and intend to continue doing so until release. It’s phenomenal to see a team take their modding so seriously.

Here’s a newly announced thing: Borderline, for Crysis Wars. Set in 2042, it begins in a military base codenamed “Cliché”. Sorry, no. “Stigma”. The “concept art” appears to be just be screenshots run through Photoshop. But I actually have a feeling this one might turn into something interesting.

And now something which made me very sad: UserCreated reports that Butterfly is on hold. Butterfly is the absolutely gorgeous Crysis mod set inside a gargantuan dome, and with a delicious floating 3D user-interface that appeared inside the game world itself. It’s not dead, its developers cry: they’re simply waiting to port it over to Crysis 2. But now Crysis 2′s supposedly been delayed, so SADFACE. Hopefully it’ll all come together eventually.

RELEASES

I missed Modern Warfare mod Frontlines R3L04D when it came out a couple of weeks back. This was either due to my being at the Develop Conference, or because it has a name so dreadful my mind suppressed it. I mention it now because its team have been churning out some game type overviews, and they look quite nifty. I especially like the idea of Airborne.

And that’s about it, as far as I can tell.

UPDATES

The aforementioned Mr Lincoln deserves a prize, actually, because he also pointed me towards this: excellent Company of Heroes mod Eastern Front has released its 1.20 patch. The update features major design changes for the way the Soviets operate (they have the abililty to retreat, basically. Seem to remember it was someone else who did the retreating in that region), as well as… oh, just lots of stuff. Full patch notes are here.

Anyway, do you remember Half-Screwed, the very silly HL1 mod I mentioned a while back. Here’s an update. New features include a new player model, new scientist heads, /replaced/ scientist heads (no idea if they’re actually two separate things, or if the devs just accidentally wrote it twice), and the legendary more!

AND THE REST

Robert Yang’s doing a series on his blog where he hypes up a load of other modders. Which is always the sort of thing I can get behind. Peers praising peers is ace. Here he is explaining why Brendon Chung is ace.

And now, ladies and gentlemen of Rock, Paper, Shotgun, I present to you the funniest thing I’ve read in ages. I feel for the Fourth Reich mod team, who’re clearly doing their best to create an excellent Half-Life 2 mod. But things are against them in the most farcicle way possible.

Have a read of this, under the ‘Bad News!’ heading. It’s absolutely priceless.

‘Til next week.

    Obligatory Black Mesa comment.

      :) Yes, were is it?

    • mandrill says:

      I was just thinking that…

    • Rich says:

Despite having no logical reason to do so, I blame Lewis personally.
Until it’s published I’ll continue to poke this little effigy of him with sharp things.

    • Starky says:

Clearly they’ve been hired by Valve and it will ship as part of the HL3/Ep3 (whichever they do) box.

Which means we can expect it some time around 2015.

    • Rich says:

      @Starky

      Colour me sceptical.

  2. Hides-His-Eyes says:

    >He claims it was his brother on his account who has now been sent to boarding school.

    Pissed myself.

  3. qrter says:

That was quite funny. Especially with that picture of a swastika above it – you know, because it’s bad news!

  4. Wilson says:

I would recommend anyone who has tried Eastern Front before but didn’t like it to try it again with this new patch. The addition of retreat and earned veterancy to the Russians makes a big difference, and the devs have also included some fixes for vanilla factions (the Kangaroo has been nerfed quite a bit). I expect balancing will be ongoing, so even if it isn’t perfect now it should hopefully improve quite quickly.

    • vanarbulax says:

Have they managed to get weapon recrewing in for the Russians?

Last time I heard it was a hard-coded thing and they would need relic’s support to add it.

    • vanarbulax says:

Oh and have they changed the installer so it doesn’t ask me if I want to install the shortcut without installing the mod?

    • Wilson says:

The recrewing hasn’t been changed (Russians still can’t recrew) because as you say it’s a hard-coded thing. As far as I know the installer defaults to both the mod and a shortcut. Was there an issue where it only defaulted to the shortcut? Sounds like a minor issue in any case.

    • vanarbulax says:

Yeah it was a minor, though amusing, issue where both “mod” and “shortcut” were available in the tick box. I was tempted to try installing the shortcut without the mod but decided against it.

Though I notice this time it tried to default the folder name with a special character which XP wouldn’t allow. Presumably newer operating systems do,

    Quoting the radiator blog:
“And that’s the ingenuity that every modder should aspire to, the ability to achieve something so huge with so few resources. No / little new code. No / few new models. Just… good design, working within the constraints. “

Only 4 persons on the world can stab a elefant to death using a spoon. All these 4 personas are game modders. So this stament make sense to me. But since ther are more than 4 modders, asking for that is unfair. Not everyone can be this clever. Aspire to it? yes… I want to be as clever has that 8 years old kid and his game. But is a unreacheable fortune for most :-(

  6. Alexander Norris says:

No Fistful of Frags, and after I went to the trouble of linking you? Bad Denby. :(

  7. Patrick says:

Tei, I think that’s a lesson we can all learn from. Games and mods should focus on implementing the concept using existing short-cuts. having whole bunch of new resources, models textures, and sound. doesn’t make a mod good.

When we see a game with a thousand new resources but a crappy concept (Painkiller Overdose) we feel bad that they didn’t try something simpler first. It’s also easier to accept that you have missed your target if you have less invested into the game. You can always remake it pretty with the help of others once your concept gets attention (Eversion)

    • Tei says:

But… designing games is the job of a designer!.

Wen a group of moddeler, a mapper join to make a mod, the first thing published is a lot of models in the editor, and maybe a map. You can’t get a designer!. If you ever try, you will hire a million guys that will want to create weapons that shot pets and force the player to solve a minigame to jump, or people that will want the game to be a interactive movie of his star-trek porn fanfiction. Where in the world can a modder get a designer? a modder has to work with the available resources, and another resource is the designer.

    • Novotny says:

I have ALWAYS wanted a budgie gun. Or a canary cannon. Maybe an halibut howitzer.

  8. MartinNr5 says:

That was not funny at all. The guy has a poor grasp of english, probably due to it not being his mother tongue, but that’s not funny.

    • Lewis says:

I wasn’t laughing at his use of language. I was laughing at the unfortunateness of that double-whammy of a situation.

  9. CJohnson03 says:

Firearms : Source was released a week or two ago. It’s been in development for at least half of an eternity, but now it is released! Good fun.

  10. DrGonzo says:

Needs more Firearms:Source news! The latest patch significantly improves the mod. It’s amazing how much gameplay can be altered by simply tweaking weapon damage and health etc.

  11. Reefpirate says:

“Seem to remember it was someone else who did the retreating in that region”

Actually the Soviets did a lot of retreating at first… Did their whole Scorched Earth strategy while retreating from the Germans. It was kind of like retreating, but doing lots of damage at the same time… Until the winter, and we all know the rest of the story…

    • Xercies says:

Do we? i only know my history from video games…i particularly like the part of history when the dnosaurs were breifly running the earth.

Stainless Steel 6.3 was released, A mod for Medieval 2: Total War, which enhances the game in every aspect.
