Comradical: More Borderlands DLC

By Quintin Smith on August 11th, 2010.

This is what you do if you want a post on RPS. You draw something like this.

2K Games just fired a rocket of scalding-hot news through the RPS postbox. After waiting for it to cool, we read that a fourth piece of Borderlands DLC, Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution, will be released this September, granting players 20+ new missions, 10 extra skill points and 3 more backpack slots. Exciting! Or is it? I’m not sure. I lost interest in Borderlands after the first six hours or so. Additional screenshots and the full announcement after the jump.

Get Your Privates Patched

By John Walker on August 11th, 2010.

Penis penis penis vagina.

Zombie Cow have released a big old update to Privates. What I’m trying to say is, they looked at their Privates, and they realised they weren’t good enough. The primary problems with their Privates were their being covered in bugs, often finishing long before the person playing with them was ready, and not being able to perform with many potential partners.

What I’m doing here is I’m conflating “Privates”, the game about battling STIs in the human body, with “privates”, a colloquialism for human genitals. In doing so, I’ve given the impression that the game having bugs, crashing, and not being compatible with some systems, are in fact problems with the penises of those working at Zombie Cow. I did this with the intention of humour. It’s my way of letting you know the game’s been patched.

Clipsqueak: Not So Massive Action Game

By Quintin Smith on August 11th, 2010.

You know what's a nicer name than grappling hook? Gapple hok. Think about it.

Free indie action game Not So Massive Action Game is altogether too hard for a Wednesday morning, and I am sorry, but we could never shun it for that reason. The thought of it! Our reputation… In NSMAG players are tasked with completing various challenges, like surviving an assault for two minutes, or planting a bomb, or protecting a girl, all from a zoomed out perspective that makes you feel like you’re stood in the eye of some kind of war-storm. Features include two player co-op on the same keyboard and using your grappling hook to pull the pilots out of helicopters. Footage of this madcap action after the jump.

Gearbox To Finish Duke?

By Jim Rossignol on August 11th, 2010.

Intriguing rumours are circulating thanks to the big K: Gearbox are said to be finishing off Duke Nukem Forever. It’s even claimed that a playable demo of the game will appear later this year. Take 2, George Broussard, and Gearbox have all declined to comment, but Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford has offered some hope by saying that he might be able to reveal more about the situation at PAX in September. Interesting times.

Guild Wars 2: Gosh

By Alec Meer on August 10th, 2010.

I read the Guild Wars 2 interviews with purely professional interest, having been frustratingly unable to click with the original game(s) but remaining impressed by ArenaNet’s smarts and intentions in terms of how to make a distinctive MMO. The stuff they were planning for the sequel sounded incredibly progressive and ambitious, but I must admit I hadn’t really thought about actively wanting the game. This video, though? Gosh. Gosh.

Loom and Gloom: Looming

By Quintin Smith on August 10th, 2010.

If I made an indie game I would call it ARTHOUSE and it would be about punching your way through a haunted art gallery.
Time for your weekly dose of monochrome indie weirdness! Yes, open wide, boys and girls. It’s probably good for you. Looming is a flash game by a Mr. Gregory Weir where you explore a timeless and ominous pocket dimension, collecting bits of evidence regarding what the place is and what happened here, gradually picking you way towards one of nine endings. It passes my sole criteria for idea-centric indie games, which is to say I’d give a finger to see the idea realised on the same scale as a AAA commercial title. Some more thoughts and a video walkthrough after the jump.

States Of The Nation: More Civ V Thoughts

By Alec Meer on August 10th, 2010.

I’m picking up right where I left off, so please forgive my brusquely providing you with this link to my initial Civ V post rather than summarising.

This time, I wanted to chat about one of the larger (if optional) changes to the age-old Civ formula. To whit (I keep saying “to whit” lately. What’s a decent alternative), City States. These are small, static nations which don’t compete with you – but they can help you. Alternatively, you could crush them.

Connect Four WAR: Puzzle Quest 2

By Quintin Smith on August 10th, 2010.

Quinine is a bitter flavouring with painkilling properties used in tonic water and Irn-Bru. No word of a lie, tonic water glows like a lamp under an ultra-violet light because of the quinine.

Remember 2007′s mutant-evolution-of-bejeweled Puzzle Quest? The sequel, Puzzle Quest 2 (no subtitle here, but feel free to invent your own in the comments), hits Steam this Friday. I’ve got my hands on it early, and I’ve spent the last couple of hours matching my way to victory over various goblins and ne’er-do-wells. Ooh, it’s good. How good? Read my impressions after the jump.

Splash Damage Explain Brink’s Backstory

By Jim Rossignol on August 10th, 2010.

Giant cities in the sea, a crisis of resources, a refugee disaster, the brink of civil war (do you see…), yes it’s all going on in Brink, and Splash Damage have produced an enthusiastic new video to explain it all. Richard Ham, Paul Wedgwood, and Ed Stern explain the world they’ve created while we get to see more of the art, and more of the fancy shootin’. Interesting to see an FPS developer making this kind of effort, and certainly landing a few yards from the usual sci-fi template. Of course I’m rather more keen to actually see how this one plays, especially since it’s been a while since a multiplayer FPS really grabbed me. Maybe… just maybe.

The video, via the News Colonels of VG247, is below.
