Aw, Cuddles: Portal 2 Co-Op Screenshots

By John Walker on September 4th, 2010 at 9:23 am.

Dawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Last night at PAX, Valve released a new collection of co-op screenshots from Portal 2. I got to thinking that you might like to look at them. In response to this thought, I’ve put them up on popular PC gaming website Rock, Paper, Shotgun. They’re below. As usual, click on them for largess. And largeness.

Valve’s big announcement at PAX is that they are voiced by Ricky Gervais and Karl Pilkington. Pilkington is voicing the one with the perfectly spherical head. You heard it here first.

  2. Barman1942 says:

Lookin’ better and better every time I see it. Can’t wait!

You just know the fangirls are going to write dirty, dirty filthy morally bankrupt filthy dirty fucking filthy stories based on that hug picture alone.

I thought you would like to hear that this made me lol. I’m going to be attempting to make this known to you by using web-based software to deliver a “comment” stating as much.

  7. whatisthisshitgoddamn says:

    holy shit is that ingame?

  8. Tei says:

The ping tool maybe is a bit too usefull. Is two players, not one player and a human following orders. But the hug emote really fix things. <3

  9. SirKicksalot says:

    The tall one’s kinda hot.
    Eh?

  10. Arathain says:

They do look quite lovable. Which means we’re going to have to kill them, right?

  11. choie says:

They look fantastic, but one thing I don’t get is… Assuming these are in-game shots, how are we seeing both robots? Isn’t the co-op mode in 1st person POV, like regular Portal? Or will we have different camera angles during the game? (Sorry for the ignorant questions…)

    • pupsikaso says:

Developer’s tools allow for the camera to change position. For screenshots like these, the camera was moved from whatever position the player will have it fixed in-game at, to a better position in order to take more attractive shots.

  12. pupsikaso says:

So in Co-op mode you play as these two robots? That would feel kinda wierd..

  13. Mr_Day says:

Some of the shots are from a trailer, which is done in a cinematic style.

It is also possible to see your robot when you perform a gesture, looks like it works the same way hitting taunt in TF2 does.

  14. Moonracer says:

    More hugs in coop please.

  15. Decimae says:

Why not upload the original 6 mb TGA files from valve?

  16. Iain says:

    Robot glomps?

    BAN THIS SICK FILTH!

  17. Nick says:

    Hugs not Drugs!

  18. allus dwell says:

But how can we know which one is the manbot, which one is the womanbot, and which one is the heterosexist bot?

  19. The Deleter says:

Well, now they’ve got those dual emotes implimented, perhaps they could do the same for TF2. Have an Engineer and a Pyro do a hoedown or something, I don’t know. It sounded good in my head.

    • yourmother says:

      :D dual-engie brofist gogogo

    • Theory says:

The Soldier, Demo and I think Engie already have unused high-five animations…

    • The Deleter says:

      Well, that’s a surprise. :P

I’m not too sure how well dual emotes would work in TF2, actually. In a slow-paced puzzle game like Portal, you can stop to do things like that, whilst there’s not much room for that in a multiplayer shooter like TF2. It’s the same as taunting at the wrong time, but with the added reprecussion that you get your friend/anonymous ally/unwitting bot killed as well. Also, there’s only two characters in Portal 2, so that’s less animation overall (although it might be more complex to do judging by the shapes of the robots), whereas a basic, face-to-face high five in TF2 would require a carefully made animation for each class, with the hands meeting at the same relative spot in order to make it look concinving, and making each animation the same (ideally short-ish) length so one player doesn’t get stuck waiting for the other to finish.

If they pulled it off, though, it would be utterly brilliant. Heavy hugging Medic, anyone? :D

  20. alexnvrmind says:

Anybody seeing a mod down the road for the Plain & Peanut M&M skins? Just saying!

  21. MadTinkerer says:

That sounds like a “now you can’t unsee it” type pic at Halolz.com. Too bad I don’t have access to photoshop at the moment.

  22. CrowPath says:

The round one is made by the Atlas Corporation?

  23. tastysushifish says:

they’ll all be played by the loudest man in gaming Gorden Freeman!

  24. Chris says:

Hmmm, co-op mode, hopefully there will be more in the full game but the puzzles seem to require two people for the sake of requiring two people.

The infinite loop for example. If the ‘launch’ pad wasn’t round the corner it would not have required two people.

I hope to see more and me proved wrong. Anyone agree?

  25. poil says:

    한국어로좀적어ㅡㅡ

  26. gummby says:

chuck noris and vin desiel as vocies!

  27. perrin says:

look, its great that valve have created portal 2. BUT WHAT ABOUT HALF LIFE 2 EPISODE 3, they keep releasing team fortress downloadable content but have still refused to even make a trailer or gameplay of episode 3

  28. Mr. Flippers says:

those voices are gonna be awesome, especially with Karl as the round headed one. You’d like this if you watched the ricky gervais show

  29. Clairvoyant Legacy says:

Am I the only one that thinks that the picture with them hugging will only hasten the Rule 34?

  30. Ash says:

That would be…wow, that would be so awesome I’d probably die before I even got to play the game.

  31. Moakleyhammell says:

thats so stupid that you had to kill the friend block in portal 1 they better not make us kill those dudes

  32. Pungrongo says:

Brian Blessed for all voices. In every game, ever.
