The Official RPS Minecraft Server

Anyone for a spot of Minecraft?

UPDATE: Restarting server to increase player limit.

UPDATE: As awesome as 64 players is, the server is falling over. Dropping it to 32 for stability’s sake.

The RPS Minecraft server is up, via JestServers. Some brief rules: try not to tear down what other people have built. Add constructively to the world. And if you have spare loot please fill the coffers of Castle Shotgun (which you can locate via the convenient causeway from the spawn area) so that others may benefit from your bounty. If there’s a building plan, then it’s basically to turn the peaks around the castle into a thriving Gormenghast of rickety towers and dodgy viaducts. Please build frenziedly.

Let me know if there are any problems.

Also, someone was asking about skins. There’s a bunch here. To change skin press the up arrow beside each skin, which will upload it to minecraft.net via some kind of external updater. Clever stuff.

    Might pop in to build something, or maybe just start a maintained forest near the spawn to keep a plentiful supply of wood.

      20 users.
      I think it might work best with multiple embarks with seven players each.
      Then we can have multiple RPS progress updates on the colonies. :D

    There’s a convenient bug in SMP at the moment: if you drop a pick (or other damaged tool), when you pick it up again it’ll be brand new.
    While the bug lasts, you don’t need to worry about wearing out your tools.

    I tried to join, came into an empty world (no blocks at all), fell into the void and was stuck taking damage.
    I tried to rejoin and all I got was a black screen. Same for my mate who also tried. HALP MEEEE!

      That’s wierd, as I usually have all the settings on max and singleplayer runs fine. As did the multiplayer server I tried yesterday. And now all the servers I try and join just give me a completely black screen.

    IMHO, Minecraft needs a way to give each player an island, and then drop islands into the same map while players are connected together. P2P worldbuilding! RPS archipelago ahoy!

      Yeah met too, I had just finished building a canal for my artificial river which I planned to throw down a three miles pit down to the bowels of the earth and then change its course towards my own personnal lava lake.

    Careful with the update chaps, Notch is having a fair bit of grief from internet wankers due to grey-screen issues. Might be best to hold off the update til this is fixed.

      Quick tip for those who already updated and have the grey screen bug. Locking your computer and unlocking it again gets you out of the GSOD. Works for me with Win7 64. Windows Key + L locks the PC. So does pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del and pressing enter once. Unlock again by typing your password and pressing enter or just pressing enter if you don’t have one.

    I really want to go on and compare what’s there, and go “F**k me, I can do this”. I lost my last secret underground base (seriously). Spawned, got some wood, built the mobile stuff (table, picks and boat) and went looking for a good site. Found coal in a cliff and just kept going in and down. Got killed (this game needs random underground pigs) respawned at my start point and could never find my bloody base again! You can go a long way fast in a boat.!

    Does Castle Shotgun have a farm yet? I’ve pretty much figured out how to make an awesome, irrigated farm anywhere where there’s access to water. I’d be happy to share, too.       I made a rooftop terrace farm in my single player game, and have stopped even climbing the ladder to check on it, I have so much wheat now. Iron buckets are magical things. :)

      Sorry, but I think irragation is only working in single player. Also you could only build it near rivers as you said since the liquids dispear once you plop them with the bucket.

    I created a Tower/Lighthouse near the spawn containing some starting supplies in the first floor and a workshop in the “basement”. (mostly because Castle RPS is bloody far and not visible from the spawn)

    Donations of gear might be welcome.

    The community of the official server need to put things right.

    First: institute a campaing to refill the land with trees.. this is very important, because the land is barren, and people neeed wood.

    Massive transportation system. Or just some main streets… or a enormeous wall around a “town”. Something to “shape” the town. It will help travel. Too bad buckets are not patched, since a water canal can be a really fast transportation system.

      If wood is needed, I made a tree garden up in the sky. Plenty of wood to chop and saplings to collect.

      The problem is that it’s a bit away from the current spawn point, so go back to the old spawn point (the one with the cactus) and search for a huge-ass platform up in the sky. I’ll try and make the place more accessible/visible later.

      Also, you can find trees in far lands. People just chop down all of them near the spawn point, that’s an unstoppable trend. You can’t stop ‘em from punching trees when that’s the first thing they see when they log in!

      I intent to plan a tree yard around the spawn tower with a chest filled with saplings so people can replant.

      The tower is also meant to have free tools and resources, but since it’s dependent on donations the quantity available varies a lot.

      It might still be an alpha, but it’s stable enough for online play.

      I believe there is a specific problem with the RPS server, as I have browsed several other public servers and they seemed to work fine with several players logged in (10 to 30). But something I noticed is that NONE of them had a snow map. I’d guess that a bunch of players constantly messing with the map and the server handling the constant snow coverage could help explain the instability issue.

    Yep, server can’t verify names so logins time out. Could turn off name verification, but I’d rather not.

    I’m looking at the maps meanwhile and wait for Civ5 demo to finish downloading :)

    This server is for “experiments” and is whitelist only the new server is 85.236.100.199:25565

    The bare minimum of anti-griefing measures is to at least restrict use of flint and steel. There’s a lot of lazy griefers around who can’t be bothered to do more than set fire to any wood that’s around and bugger off again, and the inability to do that is discouraging to the more persistent sort as well.
