Heavy, Yet Light On the Feet: Dance Fortress

By Kieron Gillen on September 29th, 2010 at 3:17 pm.

I especially like the cropping here.

Do you remember pro-animator James Benson’s dancing Team Fortress 2 characters? Of course you do. You commit everything RPS publishes to memory and, if your feeble mind fails, tattoo it onto your body. Anyway, you may remember they were all work in progress. James has finally finished the whole thing, which can be viewed below…

Though he urges and begs you to watch it full screen on max HD resolution. And I’ll add that it’s worth watching several times, just because there’s so much detail on there. Hurrah!

The pyro on the right does it for me. I can place all the other dances except his, but whatever it is, its awesome (ly camp).

  2. DevilSShadoW says:

i almost forgot about this! Thanks RPS for being there for me when it matters. <3

  3. Baka says:

    The engineer!

  4. spod says:

Someone remind me what the song in the credits is from please!

  5. Batolemaeus says:

    Holy mother of god.

    This is absolute genius.

  6. Armyofnone says:

w00t. Glad to see this is getting attention here too!

  7. Man Raised By Puffins says:

Lovely stuff, especially the interplay between the classes on the middle floor and the Spy popping up at the end.

    • LionsPhil says:

If you frame by frame it, not only does the spy pop up, but the scout points him out, and the soldier is just starting to turn around as it cuts to the group shot.

Apparently team boundaries run deeper than dance squabbles.

  8. KillahMate says:

I actually hold a bunch of Chinese teenagers in the basement, whom I have memorize RPS posts verbatim. If I tattooed it on my body, I’d need a mirror to look things up, which is just unreasonably complicated.

  9. dividedby0ohshi says:

Utter genius, the MJ mask on the spy did it for me on this. Great work :D

  10. CMaster says:

Still not sure (as I wasn’t when the WIP videos appeared) about the fact that the characters seemingly have no bones, and instead are made of some kind of jelly.
Not to say it isn’t an impressive achievement of course, but still.

    • LionsPhil says:

If you look at his other demo roll stuff, it’s very much a deliberate stylistic thing. Although I find it overdone too.

  11. MonkeyMonster says:

OMFG – sublime. Absolutely awesome. Toss up between the sniper, spy, engineer [and gun], demo, pyro, soldier, scout, medic and heavy tbh. Tower of hats off to the bloke.

  12. Huggster says:

What ON EARTH is the heavy doing to the medic at the end !!!!
Whatever it is, it certainly isn’t savoury.

  13. Mad Doc MacRae says:

    MOTHER OF GOD

  14. jeroen says:

did you see the spy at the end backstabbing the soldier after he gave the scout the finger? :D

  15. Tei says:

I want to be a fly, to look at this video with multifaceted eyes, and not lose any detail :-(

  16. Choca says:

    Awesomeness.

  17. abhishek says:

Excellent video. I found the Soldier’s actions to be the most entertaining. Would have been awesome if it were longer.

  18. sbseed says:

thats messed up no matter how you look at it…. that said, it is also roll on the floor funny.

  19. Frankle says:

Valve have to put these as new taunts in the game. they must I might start playing the game again if they did.

  20. Noc says:

The shenanigans on the middle row are the best thing.

  21. RagingLion says:

That’s really weird. I just read all of the Valve interviews PC gamer did recently and watched this based on their post about it a few days ago.

  22. benjamin says:

If you pause the video at 0:33 you can see the spy just about to backstap the solider. Sneaky.

  23. haircute says:

aw hell he went and done it.

  24. mpk says:

That’s put a big fat grin on my face. Absolutely wonderful.

  25. westyfield says:

    Not enough eyes.
    Need more eyes!

  26. Urael says:

Ah, here we go. RPS getting back to what RPS does best. Forget pimping Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress or , Team Fortress 2 will forever be the Hivemind’s most enduring love!

  27. dayjack01 says:

have you noticed the dance the spy does from the start is from WOWs human dance lol good video :D

  28. Brumisator says:

Thanks again RPS for any (even remotely) Valve related news I can in turn post on my own site.
(of the Fallout of the Half-life kind)

  29. Black Yousa says:

Heh, at the end, I noticed the spy about to backstab soldier.

Goddamn this is some FLUID animation here.

  30. the one free man says:

lol epic win i love the medic and heavy and the scout who hits the barrels and kills soldier

  31. Pancakes says:

lol. The soldier flipped off the scout at the end.

  32. Eumel says:

    Spycheal jackson WINS!!1 :D

  33. Nithin says:

This is simply amazing. All the movements, the chemistry between the classes awesome.. Engi n the SG, thats got to be the best thing.. Loved it.

  34. utgardloki says:

@dayjack01 geez, its the blood elf dance, not the night elf or whatever. im pretty sure that the night elf one is straight out of a “gentlemen’s club”. and blizzard got the blood elf one from napolean dynamite anyways.

“i’m in you’re base eating your cookies”

  35. Alex says:

I like the Snipers Napolean Dynamite dance

  36. Alex says:

alright so this is really hard to see but the Spy actually throws something at the engineer…..which is why the engineer simply rolls off the gun and lays on the ground.

  37. Super Sausage says:

    hahahaha, well.

I just dont mention that the heavy and medic are so totaly homosexual xD

    But…great video anyways :D

  38. LOGMA says:

I swear after i saw this i said “TF2 needs a Taunt to where it makes everyone in the server dance for exactly 32 seconds” but then again idk how they would pull that off XD
