No Pussy Blues: Blade Kitten Demo

By Kieron Gillen on September 24th, 2010.

If I was any less hungover, I'm sure there would be a whole load of jokes I could put here. Er... the one on the right looks like Gwenno from the Pipettes. Maybe some gag about the Pipettes turn-over of members? Okay - got it. Pretend I'm starting again. 'Pipettes V3's group dynamics were proving somewhat less than ideal.' Yes.

Catgirls, eh? Based on the comic series, you play Kit Ballard, presumably named after both one of RPS’ fave authors and fave chocolate-covered-wafer biscuit (Except for Drifters). You get up to stuff, seemingly in a left-right-scrolling fashion. You can find more out on the site, download the demo here or even buy the thing on steam for ten quid from Steam or Gamersgate. Some footage? I think so.

Front Mission Evolved: The Wanzers

By Jim Rossignol on September 24th, 2010.

That’s “Walking Panzer”, I believe. Wanzer. Yeah. Anyway, I’ve been playing a bit of our preview version of this and ROLLERSKATING ROBOTS ARE ATTACKING THE MANHATTAN SPACE ELEVATOR! Things have got a bit less interesting after the initial insane FMVs, but I will play through some more and let you know what I think. This is definitely not the Front Mission Evolved you will be familiar with from years past, anyway, as you can see from the new trailers detailing different shooty-biff Wanzer types, which I have posted below.

Tribal & Punishment: Civilization V Released

By Quintin Smith on September 24th, 2010.

There should be a multiplayer mode where all your friends play the tiny men.

Civ V is out today! And so’s the intro movie, which I’m able to embed after the jump because I researched Embedding last turn. Alec and I each had similar criticisms of the game, but maybe you’ll think it’s the best thing since sliced bread. If you’ve researched sliced bread, anyway. If you haven’t, maybe you’ll think it’s the best thing since, I dunno, that big stone you found that’s excellent for caving people’s heads in.

What did you research last turn, readers?

Witcher 2 Prison Break Multiple Path Stuff

By Kieron Gillen on September 24th, 2010.

Lars Westergren picks up VG247 posting the latest Witcher 2 video, which presents its non-linear story and non-linear fighty-biff in the form of a couple of NPCs swapping stories about what they know happens. It’s actually the area which Alec saw in Gamescom, but much better than the shaky-cam footage we linked there, so probably worth watching even for those who totally picked over that one. And since this involves the boob-reveal, it’s probably NSFW. I repeat, NSFW.

Afghan Wig-Out: Medal Of Honor Beta

By Alec Meer on September 24th, 2010.

I’m not sure what the fine array of gentlemen, gentlewomen and gentleothers who frequent this site of ours think of EA’s upcoming Medal of Honor reboot. However, you may put your opinion, whatever it is, to the test in ten days’ time. On October 4th, EA are holding a three-day open beta for their Call of Duty rival. They appear to have two intentions:

1) To make you buy the game
2) To clear up “any misunderstanding about the patriotism”

DC Universe Intro Frame-By-Frame

By Kieron Gillen on September 24th, 2010.

While we didn’t blog the release of the Blur Studios intro cinematic to DC Universe for some reason, this interview between DC’s Jim Lee and Blur Studios’ Tim Miller is just a fascinating analysis of craft. They go through the full intro, beat by beat, talking and debating the choices – what works, what they wished worked better and the thinking behind it all. If you’ve any interest in this sort of thing at all, it’s an enthralling ten minutes.

ArcaniA: GothiC 4 DemO AvailablE NoW

By John Walker on September 24th, 2010.

Poor dinosaur thing.

The relaunch of the Gothic series, ArcaniA: Gothic 4, is out in about three weeks. Created by German team Spellbound, after former developers Piranha Bytes split acrimoniously from publishers JoWood in 2007, it’s an attempt to continue the hardcore fantasy series in a way more optionally accessible to newcomers. (E.g. you can still play it like a loony, or you can switch on the comforts of a compass, etc). A demo has been released to give you a taste of all this.

HAWX 2 Not Delayed. It’s Delayed-Delayed

By Kieron Gillen on September 23rd, 2010.

VG247 report that dogs are continuing to eat their homework. At least it’s not as bad as Assasin’s Creed Brotherhood being pushed back into 2011, as HAWX 2 will be arriving on November 16th, instead of October 1st, instead of the early-September the console folk got it on. Let’s hope it doesn’t get delayed-delayed-delayed. Until then, here’s a the launch trailer.

Chris Avellone On Fallout: New Vegas Comic

By Kieron Gillen on September 23rd, 2010.

Hmm. It’s proving quite the day for PC Game/Sequential Art cross-over. Following on from the L4D2 comic I noticed an interview at Comic Book Resources with Obsidian’s Chris Avellone about writing the Fallout: New Vegas prequel comic that Dark Horse are publishing. There’s been an upsurge of gaming comics in the last few years, with the first issue of Wildstorm’s Gears of War comic being apparently the biggest selling of the year… but it’s still relatively rare that they’re actually written by the creative minds behind the games themselves. It’ll be out on in Hardback on October 19th – the same day as its US release – and has a rather lovely hyper-detailed Geoff Darrow cover. If you’ve got an Iphone or Ipad, you can view a full preview here. I haven’t so, will just have to twiddle my fingers. Of course, with an Eisner-nomination for his Clone Wars comic work, Chris is hardly a newcomer to the medium, so it will hopefully be acceptably nifty.

The Dream Academy: Inception… The Game?

By Kieron Gillen on September 23rd, 2010.

The film isn't a dream, you try too hard twonks.

RPS are in a SEXY MEETING today, so – as the men of RPS gather to my North London Hovel – I’m picking a few quick stories we missed over the last couple of days. For example, a little snippet of gossip Variety broke from a couple of days ago…

“We are looking at doing is developing a videogame based on the world of the film, which has all kinds of ideas that you can’t fit into a feature film,” Nolan said at a packed Rome press conference. “That’s something we’ve been talking about and are looking at doing long term, in a couple of years.”

So there you go. It can only be a hex-based strategy developed by Paradox.

Final Fantasy XIV Desperate To Woo China?

By Quintin Smith on September 23rd, 2010.

You think that's a tail? That's not a tail.

There’s been some strange talk surrounding MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV recently, with various corners of the internet claiming that the game was both secretly developed in China and quietly altered, for everybody, in accordance to the Chinese government’s strict laws regarding MMOGs. Which wouldn’t be a huge surprise. According to US based research firm DFC Intelligence, China has more than 100 million MMORPG players, which is just under the entire population of Japan. Except this makes no sense whatsoever since Chinese MMORPG Zhengtu Online recorded 860,265 concurrent users at its peak. Good job, DFC Intelligence.

The hubbub surrounding FFXIV, which was released yesterday, has sprung out of the language in the Japanese version of FFXIV. In summary, Japanese and Chinese both use kanji characters, though Japanese also uses hiragana and katakana character sets for, among other things, writing phonetically. For example, “チョコ” is katakana meaning “Chocobo“. Yet for reasons unexplained by the developers, FFXIV only features kanji. As such, in FFXIV Chocobos are called “馬鳥”, which translates literally as “Horsebird“. And that’s not all.
