4 L4Deads: The Sacrifice Is Out

By Jim Rossignol on October 5th, 2010 at 6:57 pm.

Valve send word that The Sacrifice, the DLC for both Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2, is now available on Steam.

“The new DLC is available free of charge to all Steam gamers who own a copy of L4D and/or L4D2. And, for a limited time, L4D and L4D2 (as well as their respective Steam bundles) are available for 66% off the regular price.”

That said, my Steam doesn’t seem to be updating. Hmm. Oh, now it is.

  1. Blargh. says:

Left4Dead? Never heard of it… Oh well, I bought them anyway.

  2. Londonistan says:

    Steam servers are busy.

  3. westyfield says:

Is the last part of the comic out as well?

    • Baka says:

      Yes, it is and

      SPOILERS!

can we safely assume, the story-arc of the first surivior-team comes to an end with it? The last panel certainly looks like it.

    • Optimaximal says:

Surely not. For one, we know three of the survivors turn up in The Passing, which is set after The Sacrifice.

    • Flint says:

Yeah but the very last screen of the comic is set after The Passing.

    • LevingLasVegas says:

Zombies on an Island. It’s epic.

I sure hope this isn’t the end. I mean, there’s still so much more for them to discover, especially about CEDA and the origin of this virus. Unfortunately, the only thing they can do is kill or alienate and isolate themselves from the rest of the world.until there’s a cure. Hence the Tango Mikes (TMs), as the soldiers call the survivors, are, essentially, Typhoid Mary’s.

But I think the best route is to keep on killing those freakin’ vampires and find out who did this!

  4. Carolina says:

Everything fine here. Maybe your Download region is the issue, Jim?

  5. Rob says:

Just try playing the game, it’ll check for new updates automatically and update. Albeit prehistorically slow.

  6. faelnor says:

    Oooooooh sweet deal. Bought!

  7. Hobbes says:

I don’t know if I’m just being silly, but the Windows 7 taskbar progress-bar seems to be in Left4Dead2 yellow, not the usual shiny green. Anyone else getting this?

    • westyfield says:

Mine changes from green to yellow, I’m not sure if it’s only with Steam (I’ve seen the Steam one green though) – maybe it’s related to download speed?

    • Emphursis says:

I have had a yellow download bar thingy for several months. If I restart Steam (when it crashes) by killing the processes with Task Manager, it goes back to the normal green.
      Most annoying.

    • Brian says:

The yellow bar indicates there is a download in progress but it is paused. My Steam client seems to be updating L4D1, L4D2, and L4D2 Add-On Support but the latter is paused.

    • Flaillomanz says:

Uh, the yellow actually means that your internet has nothing going as far as steam is concerned, at arooound 0 bytes/second. So, “yellow” means “FUUUUU-”

  8. Lewie Procter says:

    Prices are:

    Left 4 Dead 1, PC + Left 4 Dead 2, PC/Mac – £7.81/€10.19/$10.19

    Or:
    Left 4 Dead, PC – £4.41/€6.79/$6.79, or 4 pack for £3.31/€5.10/$5.10 each
    Left 4 Dead 2, PC/Mac – £5.09/€6.79/$6.79, or 4 pack for £3.82/€5.10/$5.10 each

  9. Kadayi says:

    3.5gb…that’s a hell of a lot of an update…..

  10. Vandelay says:

Does it have the L4D2 specials? I don’t know whether I could go back to just Hunter, Boomer, Smoker.

  11. phuzz says:

I’ve found that pausing the L4D2 SDK download has doubled the speed of the L4D2 game update.
Still two and a half hours to wait though :(

  12. Feet says:

Pro tip: Don’t disconnect from Steam on the basis that if reconnect it’ll start downloading. You won’t get back on at all.

    :(

  13. Jeremy says:

Honest question, is it worth getting both? I mean, barring the drama surrounding L4D2 and all that, is it worth snagging both or should I just get L4D2?

  14. Heliosicle says:

Yellow means its paused for me.

  15. Urnerun says:

What the fuck in the l4d.com i can’t “get the dlc” and in steam isn’t updatin’ WHAT THE FUUUUCK i gonna die

  16. KriJam says:

Good update , but 3 Gb is very heavy

  17. Edgar the Peaceful says:

Great, this seems to haven broken steam entirely for me: no Steam games at all until the server load clears? :(

  18. Snall says:

Good as anytime to pick them both up…looks like servers are SWAMPED though. Luckily I’m about to go to sleep/work so won’t need the game for like 15 hours.

  19. El_MUERkO says:

I logged out of Steam to log back in and kick-start the download… now steam wont let me log back in :*(

Someone mentioned that part four of the comic had come out but when I go to the website it’s not there, anyone know where it is available?

  20. prunesaver says:

@EL_MUERkO Got to it through the Left for Dead blog, or via this link

  21. Emphursis says:

    Stop the press!

The Universe is about to implode!

I have worked out what the first of Valve’s surprises is!!!

They released a game/DLC ON TIME!

  22. sagara1985 says:

    I want see it now….

  23. ==MAVERICK== says:

You can set it n the game options to never update, good for games you dont play anymore….Steam isnt weak, just the users brains. :-/

  24. rrgvwrcda says:

I love how the comic shows images of horrible, gory, graphic violence; but they still feel the need to censor out the word “fuck”.

    That’s a healthy attitude.

  25. Optimaximal says:

Surely not. For one, we know three of the survivors turn up in The Passing, which is set after The Sacrifice.

  26. Dominic White says:

Welp, I’ve been holding off long enough. L4D2 (now with the first wave of L4D1 content ported over) for £5? I’m in.

  27. rubberman says:

I can’t believe that L4D2 is freaking 3 pounds and I don’t have a credit card or a paypal account to buy it. I FREAKING HATE MY LIFE!!!

  28. Tei says:

Bill, I am gonna miss you. You was the man. /highfive

  29. Vinraith says:

Downloading at 15 kB/s, I really wish Steam would allow manual patching in addition to automatic updates, situations like this really highlight the value of non-centralized update distribution.

  30. dodo says:

krijg de hele tijd deze error als ik lfd 2 wil kopen :There seems to have been an error initializing or updating your transaction. Please wait a minute and try again or contact support for assistance.

  31. Thrawny says:

download finished, loaded it up, and crashed to desktop with an engine error :(

loaded it up again, all the survivors have no animations or weapon models, then crash to desktop, with a different engine error.

    yay.

  32. Urnerun says:

what the crap , the l4d2 one is more fast lol

  33. Brianna says:

How do i download the sacrifice? I have it on PC

  34. Brian says:

    LOL!!!!

Who the hell is this Obama guy everyone keeps talking about?

  35. Brian says:

    ^^ (that was a reply to Blargh’s comment) ^^

  36. alone_man says:

never played either game and I don’t do alot of mulitplayer. do the games have solo missions or is it all multiplayer/co-op? trying to decide if I should pick them up at this price.

    • Flint says:

You can play all the campaigns as single player, accompanied by a bunch of bots who have a good but limited AI. Singleplayer games they are not.

If you’ve got 2-3 friends on Steam who play the game then it’s worth picking the game up at this price. I never play multiplayer games myself but the L4D series is an exception, the co-op is fantastic.

    • Vinraith says:

The bots are pretty stupid, and worse there’s no way to give them orders or control their behavior. There’s no explicitly SP material, either. At this price perhaps none of that matters, but to get substantial fun out of the game I would suggest you really need a few friends to play it with.

    • Archonsod says:

Personally I tend to play it solo more often than not. Still just as much fun.

    • TCM says:

You only think solo is just as good as multi because you either never played multi, or played it WRONG.

    • jaheira says:

The bots are fine in L4D2. They don’t use the throwables, but that’s about the only niggle. It’s a great single-player game.

    • Archonsod says:

I have played it in multi. I just find the bots smarter than the average player.

  37. 1nightStand says:

If Kieron was still here, he would also link to the final part of the comics.

    :P

  38. Rick says:

Just the kind of price drop on L4D2 I was waiting for.

  39. MajorMeerkat says:

    same with me lawl

  40. LevingLasVegas says:

Zombies on an Island. It’s epic.

  41. untiedshoe says:

ya but the color scheme was that of franys dream sequence. so obviusly its like one of those clever editing effect so you can picture them safe and free but the can always pick the story back up right where they left off and then confirm it was a dream sequence.

  42. Jones says:

    3.5 Gigabyte update WTF ?

  43. haircute says:

Not having an explicitly single player experience is not too big of a downer for me. I was nervous at first, about taking it online, but once I ran through the whole game in SP and knew what to expect I had a better time than I thought I might. Almost everyone who plays campaign is pretty nice. Versus is where the assholes reside and is one mode, out of my combined 400 hours on both games, that I rarely play. Stick to campaign and you’ll meet tons of cool people that just want to have a good time and aren’t worried about being 1337.

  44. skinlo says:

It decided to redownload the entire game for me, at 14kb/s :(

  45. Jones says:

    UPDATED: 872.8 MB / 3,573.9 MB
    TIME INITIATED 21:05
TIME REMAINING 3 DAYS 8 HOURS
    DOWNLOAD RATE 9.5 KB/S

    Sucks :(

  46. Navagon says:

Biggest Steam-related fuck up ever. And this is Steam we’re talking about.

  47. The Dark One says:

If you think things are going too slowly, try changing your Download Region in the Download+Cloud tab of the Settings window.

  48. Julian Calaby says:

Where the hell is the l4d+l4d2 pack?

(Disclaimer: I’m in Australia. I’m aware that it’s a saving of only US$3.40 – it’s more the *principle* of the thing.)

    • The Hon. Reverend Fred Gherkin says:

Australia doesn’t get the L4D pack because it bundles L4D1 and regular L4D2 together. We don’t get regular L4D2, only censored L4D2. There’s no bundle featuring L4D1 and censored L4D2, ergo no savings for us. :(

  49. Luk 333 says:

I had no problem with the download for Left 4 Dead 1; it was about 800 MB. I got two achievements already for it, but I won’t be playing much, because now I also have L4D2. Thanks for the discounts, Valve!

  50. airtekh says:

Just had a crack at the L4D1 version of it. (L4D2 DLC still downloading)

I liked it. Thought the setting was pretty good (reminds me of the ‘Death Aboard’ add-on) with the brick factory and all. Loved the crescendo event when you get to the top of the big pile of gravel.

I also liked getting to the cobblestone streets and feeling some deja vu. I smiled when I carried on through the store and recognised the port area from ‘The Passing’ immediately.

The actual sacrifice mechanic seems interesting. Seems to me that on some attempts it might end up that more than one person could sacrifice themselves, if the first sacrificee gets cornered by a tank or something.

  51. fabamatic says:

I have neither, should I buy both of them or with two is just enough? In other words, people still play the original L4D? Is valve releasing L4D3 this november?

    • Vinraith says:

There’s really no reason to get the first one at this point, they’ve even ported over one of the campaigns (and with luck, may convert the others as well).

  52. Matzerath says:

Just to be contrary, I bought ‘Demigod’ for 5.99 instead.
(Apparently it has good fan-made AI mods.)
(I did reload Left4Dead 1 to play the new mission, though.)

  53. j says:

why u gona die if the fuckin update donte download for l4d and l4d2

  54. Arathain says:

It’s nice to be back in No Mercy. The L4D2 special Infected take to it like it was made for them. Corner camping by the elevator when we have a Spitter? Oh please do.

  55. haircute says:

What ever you do, DO NOT LISTEN TO VINRAITH here. Normally, I’m with him. But he has this hate on for l4d that blinds him to reason. Get both and love them equally.

    • Vinraith says:

Hate? I was just playing L4D2 (picked it up in the summer sale), I can’t imagine what the point of buying the first would be if you own the second. More campaigns (including one of the originals), more weapons, more special infected, more modes, I can’t fathom why anyone would go back to the first one after playing the second. Granted the characters in the original are (IMO) better, but that’s a fairly minor point and you get the play the originals in the Sacrifice and the converted “No Mercy” anyway.

    • SpoonySeeker says:

Exactly, L4D2 has over twice as many campaigns (and that’s ignoring the multiple extra gamemodes) including No Mercy which was pretty much the only worthwhile or fun campaign from L4D1 anyhow.

  56. bigguns says:

I finally caved and bought L4D1. I didn’t want the censored L4D2 we are stuck with in Australia, so I’ve been zombie-less for a while. I’m buying this game as it shows Valve have kept their promise to support L4D1. I didn’t want to be stuck with the old game if there was no more content coming out for it as it looked a bit short. Looking forward to finally playing L4D1 Game Of The Year + Bonus mission! It’s going to be a good night! Thanks Valve for supporting the old uncensored game. Enjoy my money ;) Haha.

  57. Corbeau says:

There’s only one problem with The Sacrifice: it’s too easy. Compare the finale of The Sacrifice, even if you activate all three generators at the same time, to the finale of The Parish. Not even close in raw challenge. It felt strange to have to sacrifice someone after we pretty much blitzed through the rest of the campaign.

It doesn’t hurt to have another solid mini-campaign though, not to mention good ‘ol No Mercy. And playing the original survivors again just feels *right* – even if we do keep shooting Louis because his office-worker attire looks zombie-like. Oh, and the saferoom dialog is hilarious. :D

Great update overall, and you can’t beat the price!

  58. annoyed says:

where the hell is it? im in california, and as of right now, its october 6. and the sacrifice is STILL not showing up for download on my xbox. wtf?

  59. MarkSide says:

The Sacrifice downloaded fine for L4D1 last night, but L4D2 is still ‘currently unavailable’. Stteeeaaaamm!! >:(
    :P
Is anyone else getting this? I’d like to know if it’s regional or if I’ve somehow screwed my install.

  60. Lobotomist says:

Caved in and bought L4D2 … only 6$

How the mighty boycotters have fallen :D

But my faith in Valve was restored by release of Alien Swarm. And L4D Sacrifice comic for free.

  61. fuggles says:

Well the comic was excellent and there were several potential desktop pictures! As for the DLC it was also good; well made, short and with amusing dialogue about punk-ass islands.

The L4D one is much better than L4D2, for all the reasons I’ve always stated. For me, when you get caught by a horde in L4D then you are in trouble as you stumble slowly about trying to shoot/push them off you to gain space. In L4d2 you equip your melee weapon and ignore them. Melee is a farce in L4D2, it is one of many things such as the ammo types that seems designed to make the game quicker and to make the level about quick forward motion – Instant kills in a 45 degree arc with quick reload and stumble is all sorts of silly. The finale of the sacrifice is quite easy anyway, but especially with melee there is nothing touching you in the open or in the melee width corridors.

No mercy is a nice add on, although I don’t much care for the l4d2 engine. I think it’s because it all looks a bit too colorful and vibrant, rather than dull and grimy ala L4D. The character models seem pretty poor too, although this may be my settings, as francis has a hexagon for a pistol hand. No mercy is good despite the l4d2 additions, rather than because of them. I like how they have patched the elevator roof to avoid spitters though ^^.

Overall, heck it’s free and the new dialogue had me genuinely laughing aloud (which further shows what a mis-step the new characters were). Reasonably sure you could turn on that last generator and then make it into the water for the boat though, if your friends could be bothered to pick you up. Lets be honest, in that scenario the safest person to be is Zoey :D

  62. Zogtee says:

I just played a bit of Sacrifice. Being old and feeble, the difficulty is about right for me. I saw a couple of special infected fighting each other and ignoring the players in two spots, which looked really fun. A glitch, I suppose. When it comes to practicing for the zombie armageddon, it’s hard to beat the L4D games. At the current price, there’s a shitload of game and content there.

  63. Bob Marley says:

Get your Mummy to buy it for you.

  64. adonf says:

I’m not up-to-date with zombie games, so this is all very confusing

Where can I find information about what add-ons are available, and which ones are included in the steam offer for each game and for the 1+2 bundle ? Also, someone here said that the levels from l4d1 were ported to l4d2, but is this part of the regular download or is it a paid expansion pack ? What about the DLCs, were they ported too ?

Please help me get unconfused !

    • bleeters says:

It’s my understanding that the various addons L4D1 and 2 have recieved so far were all free anyway, so you get them all automatically when you purchase the game.

      I think.

    • Okami says:

All add-ons for both games are free. Except if you own the 360 versions of the games, then you have to pay for everything, because Microsoft don’t like developers putting up free content on Live.

  65. meh... says:

    UPDATED 1,455.0mb
    TIME INITIATED 17:04
    TIME REMAINING 19 MINUTES

must have been busy yesterday xD

  66. Snall says:

I like the game but it has crashed or kicked me out of the game after a while each time (Only playing online with people)- sorta pissing me off.

  67. eightiesmullet says:

Snall – if you have any old maps in your “Addons” folder, delete them. This happened to me too.

  68. Mark says:

I prefer L4D1 to L4D2 (darker, better characters, grimier, no melee weapons, stark maps with more vertical gameplay) , but they’re both really good games and well worth it at the sale price. Get ‘em!
